Yes. Good. (http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/02/07/tim-schafer-says-hed-love-to-do-psychonauts-2-notch-offers-to-fund-it/)

Did you love Psychonauts? Have you often wished for a sequel that would continue Raz’ adventures? You’re not alone. Psychonauts creator, Tim Schafer mentions to Digital Spy that he’s pitched Psychonauts 2 several times to different publishers, but “no-one has taken the bait so far.”

“I’d love to do that game,” he says. “But I’d have to convince someone to just give me a few million dollars, that’s all.”

A few million dollars? If only there were some sort of successful indie developer. One who loved the original, someone with the kind of dosh to prop up development on a sequel. Perhaps someone with a nice hat and a name that rhymes with “scotch.”

Enter Notch. After reading about Schafer’s attempts to nab funding for Psychonauts 2, he put forward an offer of his own on Twitter. “Let’s make Psychonauts 2 happen, adding later in a tweet to RPS, “I’m serious.”

Tim Schafer hasn’t responded yet. He’s probably in bed, and it’s just an offer for now, but what a great story it would be to see Mojang funding a second game in the much-loved Psychonauts universe.

While I will commit heresy in the second paragraph, here I'll just say "WHOOOOOO!"

I don't think it'll be as good as the original. It might turn out to be really good, but with all the expectations people have, as well as how long ago the first one was released.... The first one was also good because of how out of right field it was - there were all sorts of terrible games, and then there was a game about a psychic summer camp. It might be a Duke Nukem Forever thing.

I literally can't stop giggling. Notch has literally become my most favorite rich eccentric person.

And before you say he isn't rich or eccentric, I point to you two things:

1. Minecraft's sales figures times 10 = his money
2. He just offered to fund a game for millions of dollars cause he wants to play a sequel.

This is why I couldn't have that much money, it would all be gone because I would just do this with it

What I love most is Notch is doing what I hope any successful game developer does, help out other developers by offering them a ride on his big boat made of money. As opposed to what most do and basically just sit on it.

Well he has basically been sitting on it up to this point besides the couple times he threw money at fellow indie guys. Plus it was all talk via Twitter between the two so obviously nothing is not set in stone.

Don't get me wrong, it will be joyous days in Villa'Ramary if this actually comes to past.

If Tim REALLY wanted to make psychonauts he could have asked Many of the numerous rich actors that CONSTANTLY (according to him) ask him if he will make a sequel

To answer this, say you have a great idea, and people agree its a great idea, but suddenly become a heck of alot more unsure about it when you are asking them to seriously give you money for it. We are talking about a few million, and Double Fine is kind of known for having trouble getting funding

Psychonauts needs a sequel like Resident Evil needs to have never had a movie made. In other words, BADLY.

Seriously, superlatives fail to describe the smile this brought to my face. Superlatives also fail to describe the boner I have after reading this news.

I have never played Psychonauts, but the thought of it getting funding for a sequal by a very rich man who loved the first, really touches my heart.

I love these cinderella moments, they bring joy-filled tears to my eyes with each dream the comes true.

If this becomes a thing, I might just out right hunt down the first and play it in one big marathon during my days off.

A kickstarter that met it's goal in only 8 hours proves that he should have no problem getting a backing on funding a game for a long time now.

dude, I do not have ten dollars in my wallet. I ration my christmas money so I can afford food. Zero income, and thanks to student loans I still need to pay over 5000 dollars a year in debt thats crippled me financially to the point I needed to take out another loan just so I didn't instantly default.

So yes, I think I have an excuse

As a rule I dont buy anything that doesn't either
A) Feed me or
B) Have potential for making me more money

While I am glad that they raised a million dollars for this one game, I am kinda torn between them using the excess to super-polish this one game versus just making two games. A bigger voice acting budget or better graphics (The increase to the music budget might though) isn't going to tweak the sweet spot of why I love Double Fine's games.

I adore the sheer amount of joy and love they put into their works. It really bleeds through to me, as a player. I can tell they lovingly crafted this game, not to make millions of dollars, but because they had an idea that they thought was genuinely cool and wanted to share.

Double Fine has always been a personal favorite company (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQCP85FngzE) of mine, ever since I picked up this weird looking platformer on a whim for my PS2 about a psychic summer-camp.

Like I said, I adore the sheer amount of joy and love they put into their works. I loved the world and detail in Brutal Legend, I adored the imaginative Costume Quest, and when Stacking hits the PC I will buy that with a DON.

(Although on the other hand, I do kinda hate Tim Schaefer for the cliffhanger Costume Quest DLC ended on.)

I'm confused, is the point-and-click game going to be Psychonauts 2 despite that being an action game (I mean, not to say the storyline/acting/plot elements weren't also important and hilarious but the actual gameplay was that of an action game...) or is it just a different game that he decided to get funding for the day after Notch offered to fund Psychonauts 2, or...?

Kim
02-10-2012, 01:11 PM
The latter.

Aerozord
02-10-2012, 03:47 PM
Its possible he just isn't aware of Notch's offer, or maybe he doesn't take it seriously. This wasn't from any official channel, just a comment from him. While it wouldn't surprise me that Notch meant it because he's random like that, the folks at Double Fine might not know this and just dismiss it.

Like I said earlier how many people go, I'd totally fund it, but never actually follow through

Fifthfiend

Last I heard about it was that "theyre talking" or something.

I figure the whole thing just made Tim look around and go hey nerds love the fuck out of me, maybe there's some money in that.

stefan
02-10-2012, 05:01 PM
it might just be that Schaefer doesn't actually realize how stupid rich Notch is, so he takes "sure I'll fund it!" as "I'll throw together a fundraiser for you or something," rather than "hang on, I need to find a crane so I can fill a dump truck with all this money."

Kim

Double Fine, and by extension anyone using Kickstarter, don't get nearly as much money as they raise.

Apparently any money raised on Kickstarter is considered a "gift," and if you don't know anything about taxes that means that half the money goes straight to the government.

Also, Kickstarter itself takes a 5% cut off the top.
