Step 1: Plan the Party

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc230/Shyria_Dracnoir/Chargen.png

As you can see, we have the player and a maximum of five additional party members. Players have customizable names, occupations, current roles, departure times, destinations and vehicle. Secondary party members have customizable ages and names.

Player Roles: Greenhorn, Adventurer, Trail Guide

Determines influence over the party. On greenhorn, routes are automatically chosen but players can still determine wagon speed and break periods. As an
adventurer, you can choose paths at trail forks, but can be demoted to a greenhorn when morale falls too low. You can however be re-promoted when morale picks up. Finally, the trail guide has the same powers as the adventurer, but receives an additional $500 when hired. However, if morale falls too low, the game automatically ends.

Player Occupation: Banker, Doctor, Merchant, Pharmacist, Wainwright, Gunsmith, Mason, Blacksmith, Wheelwright, Carpenter, Saddlemaker, Bricklayer, Prospector, Trapper, Surveyor, Shoemaker, Journalist, Printer, Butcher, Baker, Tailor, Farmer, Pastor, Artist, Teacher.

The party leader occupation determines starter cash, in descending order from richest to poorest. This is offset by the poorer occupations receiving a bonus score multiplier for completing the journey, provided they settle at the location chosen at the start of the game.

Departure Times: January-December, 1840-1860

Starter Town: Independence (available in all years), St. Joseph (after 1842), Council Bluffs (after 1846) and Nauvoo (after 1846)

Destination Towns: Oregon City (all years), Sacramento (all years), Salt Lake City (after 1847) and Jacksonville (after 1846).

Wagon Types: Small farmwagon, large farmwagon, and Conestoga.

If anyone wants to participate, send in your names and starting preferences. Party members are first come, first served (or whatever would be the funniest according to the group). I'll update the thread here with links to the Livestream page and dates to tune in, as well as recaps of where the stream left off.

Our party definitely needs Little Timmy the Adorable, Squishy Child as a secondary member.

Any idea if the "spend every penny on bullets and genocide the buffalo species for supplies" strategy from the original game is still optimal? If so we should totally play a teacher accompanied only by schoolchildren. You know, for the funsies.

Our intrepid crew, ladies and gentlemen. One schoolteacher, several small children and one big dummy (I ran out of room for his last name, sadly).

This is one thing I forgot to mention and didn't even know about until I was pointed to through Wikipedia. There is a point-buy based list of skills that varies depending on your occupation; some occupations get certain skills by default (for example, the Trapper will automatically start with Sharpshooting and Tracking).
These skills effect gameplay in the following ways:
Medical - Patients who get sick or injured are less likely to die
Riverwork - Less likely to have wagon accidents when crossing rivers
Sharpshooting - More likely to kill animals in one shot
Blacksmithing - More likely to repair broken wagon parts
Carpentry - More likely to repair broken wagon parts
Farming/animals - Makes livestock less likely to die and makes your party immune to smallpox
Tracking - More likely to find more animals to kill
Botany - More likely to find edible plants
Commerce/trade - More likely to get a better deal when trading
Cooking - Get more nutrients in food
Musical - Boost wagon train morale
Sewing - Make clothing last longer
Spanish - Translate from Spanish to English when talking to Spanish speaking people
Unfortunately, Anne Marie doesn't appear to know anything of use right away, so it'll be up to us to decide her skillset if we so wish. Make your suggestions within the next day or so, and then we can get the adventure started proper.

Can I just officially say two things.

1: Oregon Trail II is awesome, BUT

2: I staunchly refuse to follow a Let's Play when Shyria has made the crucial and unforgivable mistake of not naming the settlers after NPF members.

Where's the stakes? Who cares if Anne Marie survives? Now imagine it's like, Krylo and Synk and Mauve Mage and Fifthfiend out there. Ah, yes! Now we care. (Just enough to sabotage everything.)

I'll play ball with you snake. When this party kicks the bucket, I'll do another with the NPF member names.

Spanish and music, in either order.

Yes, just those two things.

I think cooking, botany, music, Spanish sewing and possibly farming are the skills that will best assist us in our great pedagogic mission to genocide the buffalo.

I think cooking, botany, music, Spanish sewing and possibly farming are the skills that will best assist us in our great pedagogic mission to genocide the buffalo.

So the current vote count is:

Spanish - 4
Botany -3
Music - 3
Cooking - 2
Sewing - 2
Medical - 1
Farming - 1
Tracking -1

So going by popular consensus and with a total of 120 available points, we can afford everything but Medical and Farming while still having 20 points left over. At this point, the only remaining skill we can afford to use all 120 points is Commerce/Trading. Seeing as how it's highly unlikely that we'll actually get far enough for the endgame bonus to matter, I'll go ahead and invest in that. Hopefully this will offset our abysmally low amount of starter cash. Anne Marie's final skillset breaks down thusly:
Tracking, Botany, Commerce/Trade, Cooking, Musical, Sewing, Spanish

So, now that we have the pregame setup completed, we can start the actual live play. Unfortunately, I've recently made an unpleasant discovery that the version of the game I'm working with (acquired through "perfectly legal channels") does not support save files. At this point, whatever we start has to be seen through until the end, so we need to consider the time of the livestream carefully. I can possibly compensate by speeding up the simulation time, but otherwise we need to be ready for a long sit-down. Currently, I'm looking at sometime either Thursday or Sunday, as I have other obligations on Friday and Saturday. Let me know what works best for everyone who wants to participate as soon as possible.
