Quit saying "wreck havoc". It is pronounced "wreak havoc".
I know, I know. Somebody fucked up a year ago on a major news network, or possibly during a debate, or maybe some political pundit decided to be all down-home and folksy for the viewers. Even I cannot remember the exact origin of this turn of phrase, though I have heard it more and more often on television as the months have passed by. I have turned a blind eye to this until now.
But you, sir, are an elected official. I should not be able to tune into C-SPAN and hear the phrase "wreck havoc" coming out of the mouth of an elected official. You, good sir, are not a fucktard, or at least I should hope you are not. Quit sounding like one. I can only assume you even went to college, despite your clamoring that college is the domain of the liberal elite.
Quit saying "wreck havoc". Immediately.

I'm not even bitching about the internet. I just know one of these days the president is going to pronounce "bathe" as "bath" on national television (SOMEHOW) and I'm going to have to commit suicide.
Like he will possibly even say "bath-ed" instead of "bathe-d". That's how bad it's going to be. The president is going to sound like the annoying overcorrecting white people at a dinner party. And it all begins here.

At least I can take pride in the fact that my only "mistakes" were an American spelling and a sentence fragment used purposefully for effect.
Again, my main complaint is with "experts" on the news who continually say things like "this bill will wreck havoc on our financial system" constantly. I hate talking points in and of themselves, but when they continually say the wrong thing over and over again because they are repeating said talking point, it becomes especially grating. I could care less about grammar on an informal internet forum. Well, as long as I can understand what you are talking about.
Oh, and yeah, saying "EPIC FAIL!" constantly is dumb, but dumb in and of itself, not simply because it is ungrammatical. But I can see why it would be annoying to someone. "My bad" is another one everyone says now, even people entirely disconnected from the dialects where it is commonly used. BUT at least it is how it is actually said. Saying "wreck havoc" is like saying "My brad".

I know some people who learn English as their second language are often better than the average native speaker. One of my English professors in college was from India and she knew/knows far more about English grammar than I do. I'm assuming that since you have to learn it to master it, you avoid making mistakes that someone who just learned it totally "by ear" might. On the other hand, people who learn a language as a second language have problems with euphemisms and turns-of-phrase.
Fun fact: I've never seen Game of Thrones. That one gif is more enticement for me to watch it than everything everyone has said about it.

I'd just like to say, definition 49 is really a long way down there in definitions, and clearly 1-48 get precedence over it, PLUS, 49 clearly says that it's for informal use only.
So, if you want to be better than 49th place, use one of the other definitions. If you're being formal, then you can't even apply number 49.

No, the definition implies that informally, good can be used in place of well. It does not mean "informal well."
Seriously Sif, you are among the last people who should go about trying to lecture people on English. In that same post you tried to use "Smarties" to indicate a thing that is being possessed by Smarty. (The correct form would be "Smarty's," fyi.)
Hoo boy does this forum hate posting from phones.

I find most of this thread incredibly tiresome. Outside of ridiculous phone text contractions I don't nor should any one give a shit about simple typographical errors this is not a formal setting and we are communicating in our free time presumably to enjoy our selves. We are not writing a formal publication. Ergo smarty's point about grammar being correct if you understood the person irrespective of technical errors being my favored stance.

This thread is pretty funny. Grammar nazis are a source of unending comedy, especially because by definition they don't know shit.

I control language, it doesn't control me. Grammar Nazis just have an inferiority complex that they try to make up for by being exacting.

The purpose of language is communication. It is a fluid, organic and ever evolving creation of man, it also happens to have rules. The rules are there to make your statements clearer and following them is a basic and extremely easy to perform courtesy to those you're addressing.
