View Full Version : It is getting hot in here, almost... steamy: Steam Summer Sale 2012 Thread

Ramary
07-10-2012, 05:24 PM
The Yearly Steam Summer Sale is starting on July 12th. (I know this because I am psychic*). I am gonna update the thread with the deals each day because I am a nice guy.

So what are you guys hoping for? How will you shoot your wallets into Gabe's mouth this time?

Originally, I was mainly hoping for ARMA sale for DayZ but I head DayZ might spin off into it's own game so who knows.

*By "Psychic" I mean an indie dev whoes game will be on sale said the 12th, and the current midweek sale is ending at 10am steam time on the 12th instead of the usual 4pm.

EVILNess

I honestly have nothing on my plate that I want to purchase. I am kinda hoping this thread will bring some potential gems to my notice.

Also, Walking Dead is a spectacular P&C Adventure game and has *GASP* REPLAY VALUE. So if it goes on sale and you like P&Cs and incredibly depressing stories full of grey morality, snap it up!

Depending on what goes on sale, I might keep an eye out for Harley Quinn's Revenge (yeah, because I totally haven't sunk enough hours of my life into that franchise already...), or maaaaybe Stacking, Quantum Conundrum, or Terraria. Possibly Killing Floor, since you folks tend to play it on Steam Nights occasionally, but it's not too high on my list of priorities. I dunno. I don't really have much of a wishlist right now. Hell, I've yet to even finish Skyrim.

Fortune Summoners
At least one sequel to Creed II

May be getting:

Will Probably Not Get but Sis is Really Excited Despite Not Playing Games:

Dunno what else.

I've been thinking of Portal 2 but I'm terrible at the first so I dunno. And the games I want to buy aren't on enough of a sale.

( Skyrim, Torchlight 2, pretty much )

Edit: FFFFFFFFFF I bought Ys Origin last week for $20 and now it's $12.

Arcanum
07-12-2012, 12:19 PM
Well the sale lasts until the 22nd, and the general rule of thumb with Steam sales is "unless it's a daily (or, now that they added it, flash) deal, wait until the last day."

Ramary
07-12-2012, 12:20 PM
Torchlight 2 won't go on sale considering it is not even out, and Portal 2 is enjoyable even if you think you are bad at it, play co-op with someone if you can. Skyrim will get a daily deal, I assure you.

Remember rule 1 of Steam Sales, don't buy anything till the last day unless it is a daily deal or a flash sale.

Edit: Arcanum approved advice.

Really tempted by some of those bundles, like the THQ one. But my fundage is practically nil right now and this new job I've started won't pay until a few weeks from now. Even then my pc is still not up to scratch and most of my money is first and foremost going into a new car as soon as I have enough, before I even think about getting a new pc.

Damn you Steam sale, why must you taunt me so!?

Stupid flash sale for Rayman Origins. How will I possibly be able to tell if it'll go on a daily sale for a potentially bigger discount now?

For that matter, my lack of 360 controller for PC or similar probably would make it a subpar experience anyway. Arrrrrgh.

The obvious solution is to wait two years or so until all the DLC is out, and pick up the inevitable GOTY/Ultimate Edition for a pittance.

Pip was the dude with the server for servering, so ask him.

Also new vote is up, not sure what to vote for that is not-Brink (UPDATE: Voted for Brink because Stronghold 3 somehow earned a metascore less than 50 and Ghost Recon seems 'meh'.)

EDIT: I also need some help with LEET IP HAX so I can see what two of the flash deals are (they say not available in my region). Or you can just say what they are (the not-Star wars and not-Backtothefuture). Lol valve placeholders.

Revising Ocelot
07-13-2012, 04:40 AM
I'm pretty sure Ghost Recon is a lot, lot less meh than Brink.

Anyway, you haven't needed Hamachi for Terraria since forever. If you want to cheat a little, you can download a map viewer for whatever maps you generate so you can locate where all the tasty minerals are. Beats fruitlessly digging around for hours on end like Minecraft.

Messiah of Might and Magic for under $3 is a true blast from the past... i just might give it a pass, cause it's a pretty dated game and i don't really see myself finishing it. Trine 2 on the other hand seems pretty cool, i have Trine 1 and love it, but 2 has Coop Multiplayer? How does that work?

BTW, the Bethesda pack is totally worth it for people who don't have most of those games...

It's like direct IP connection, I think. But you have to be part of a shitty community to get a good server it seems. And then the people on those servers are shitty too.

Most of those servers use third party server software which has tons of features necessary for playing with shit people. But last I checked it also fucks up bits of the game. so it's best to play with the two or three people you know who also have the game.

Also: for obvious reasons Terraria is more fun when you still don't know what the fuck is happening. I also recommend not using any map viewers and shit until you've got some decent mileage out of at least one character.

I bought Portal 2 for some people, but nothing for myself yet. I actually don't need many games this year. Shogun 2 eats my gaming life entirely, and I'm still working through Saints Row The Third.

Vote the Darkness 2 for the next vote sale, since it's a very decent game with potential multiplayer shenanigans. RAGE doesn't bring that much and burns out right when you expect it to bring more and Revelations is basically a copy/paste of the last two Assassin Creed games in terms of gameplay.

Numbers is hard.

In non-summer sale Steam related news: I have a copy of Dungeon Defenders and Nuclear Dawn. First to dibs gets it. I was hanging onto one for a friend who never got around to playing and just never cared about the other.

Sidenote: I am under a boil water area in my area, so instead of drinking boiled water like a sane person, I'm clearing out my booze cabinet because I'm thirsty or something. You should, ideally, beat me to the liquor cabinet with your dibs.

Upon an extensive night of wondering how fucking much are my TF2 items worth I found out that unless I find someone who is either a)kind or b)an idiot I'm not getting Skyrim even if I throw in 90% of my TF2 backpack as at best it's worth $17, including the $5 item I have from DotA 2.

The fact that, if my life depended on my trading skills, I'd be dead several times over doesn't help at all.

Hm, A Valley Without Wind is 40% off during the sale. I would definitely recommend keeping an eye out for its flash deal or whatever since it's definitely fun and has been reworked to be funnerer over the last two big updates. It'd also be interesting if we could arrange some small groups of relentless pillaging since there's easy co-op built-in.

But should no sale come up then just buy it on the last day, since the current price is reasonable for it.

It's a public regiment for the NA Hardcore Tuesday and Friday LInebattles. There's a Steam group for it I think.... : http://steamcommunity.com/groups/Pub_Regiment

Not to brown-nose too much, but the public regiment I'm rolling with are more discipline than about 80% of real regiments(clans) in the NA scene, which is kinda.. sad in retrospect. Mostly because the pubs are drilled with a simplified Prussian Line Infantry manual for about 15 min before the actual event starts. Anyways, it's a great best to start off getting into the community events since everyone can be accepted into the pub regiment from disgraced leaders of regiments, muted 12 year olds and even Quebecois. As long as the buggers behave, of course.

Cave Story is currently on a flash deal for 2.50, which is a perfect sale since it is not only a fun platformer, but it makes the best use of the simple elements it has to make a very satisfying overall game.

Basically whenever an awesome game goes for around 2 bucks you should buy it. Kinda like what happened with Alpha Protocol way back when they let it go for that price.

EDIT: Also get today's Indie bundle since it has A Valley Without Wind, it's probably one of the best deals you'll find for it.

This has been the only Indie Bundle that has enticed me so far, and it's looking to be pretty good. Haven't played Greed Corp yet, but it has a FANTASTIC jazz soundtrack which I wish they would sell online. Ys I really want to sink a few hours in when I get the chance, but I haven't been able to play yet.

But I just started Gemini Rue, a point-and-click game that has a very interesting, film noir style in a futuristic setting so the story looks pretty good so far. And there doesn't seem to be as much pixel-hunting as other point-and-click have been that otherwise driven me from the genre. I feel like this game has been kinda overlooked though so I suggest people check it out.

I have dilemma.

I own Arkham City on the 360, but if I were to buy the DLC it would cost me $13 (1400 points costs ~$22 after tax, so 800 points is ~$13. Buying points in Canada sucks ass). For that price I can basically get AC and the Harley DLC on the PC. The problem is that if I splurge on all the other DLC it will cost me ~$21, whereas the Batman Franchise bundle will cost me $25.

Should I just get the Franchise, which basically gives me Arkham Asylum and Gotham City Imposters and all of the associated DLC for $4? I'm on the verge of doing just that. Thoughts?

BTW I'm aware that the Harley DLC was called lackluster (among other things) but I still want to play it.

Can anyone vouch for/against Fortune Summoners (http://store.steampowered.com/app/203510/)? It looks unbelievably cute which wins lots of bonus points with me and I greatly enjoyed Recettear (because... that was also unbelievably cute). I know Carpe Fulgur are only responsible for porting the games, though, so enjoying one of their titles doesn't necessarily mean enjoying others.

(Also, you should totally buy the Carpe Fulgur pack because they do a great service that should be supported as much as possible, localising independently developed games from Japan that we otherwise wouldn't see)

New Vegas can be played without any prior knowledge of the fallout backstory. As far as I understand it story elements from the first two Fallouts return but the story is self contained. I enjoyed it even though the only other Fallout I Played was FO3. Gameplay-wise, if you played a few RPGs and FPSs in the last decade you should have no problem getting into it.

LA Noire is pretty good. I've heard it labeled as kind of a 3D Phoenix Wright. It's made by Rockstar but it's very much a linear game. The meat of the game is in finding clues throughout the crime scene environment, interrogating witnesses, and finding out whether they are lying or telling the truth through LA Noire's really amazing facial expression game engine. Story and characters are pretty good too.
So
I've heard the PC version was incredibly buggy on launch, and I'm not sure if all bugs have been fixed yet so look that up. Also, check out pcgamingwiki.com and they might have some fixes for LA Noire.

Azisien
07-19-2012, 04:13 PM
New Vegas and LA Noire are both easily worth 5 bucks. The sheer amount of playtime you get out of NV justifies it, and now that the game has been patched beyond its launch-day bugginess, it's more playable. LA Noire is an enjoyable cinematic experience, but it's only good for one playthrough. You'll get a good 8-12 hours out of it, maybe a little more. I consider that a good buy, though.

Arcanum
07-19-2012, 04:32 PM
L.A. Noire is fine if you always replace the word "Doubt" with "Force" because that's what it was originally labeled, but then they changed it for some reason before the game launched but never changed the dialogue that was made for the "Force" choice. So be prepared to have Cole yell at innocent old ladies that they are murderous satanic lesbians.

Also it gets really repetitive by the time you hit the vice cases. And I stopped playing when I got to Arson (the one after Vice, if I remember correctly) because I just got bored and didn't really care about the overarching story.

You get Old World Blues too? That is the best DLC. Honest Hearts is pretty good too, the other 2 you can skip, but Lonesome Road gives you some nice rewards at least.

I am so glad I got Recettear and Bastion.

Recettear is nice lighthearted fun, with a surprisingly difficult dungeon crawling minigame. It's funny and silly and sometimes I feel like an evil overlord with some of the marked-up prices I can get away with.

Bastion couldn't be more of a polar opposite in tone and focus if it tired. It's dark, tough, and that narrator is amazing. Also great.

ArmA 2 doesn't show up for me in the main page, but it does everywhere else. Go figure.

Also, some dude tried to scam me off my dragonclaw hook. he had a key for the game I wanted, had changed his name 10 times since yesterday to completely different names, said his rep on his steam's profile ( the comments, which you can delete ) are enough proof that he's for reals, that he's not on steamtrades 'cause he's "a TRADER not a PLAYER" and then he gave me half the key to show how serious he was.

...must admit I'm half-tempted due to the Day Z factor. Because Rock Paper Shotgun, almost everybody I know outside this forum, and almost everybody I don't know raves about it on a daily basis. Eek.

My damage:

Beyond Good And Evil
Fortune Summoners (was a gift)
Star Wars KOTOR
Thief and Thief 2 (I already had deadly shadows)
Trine 2
Torchlight (was a gift)

All in all I spent around $14 (about £10?), so I'm pretty content. Especially since that lot would cost £64 out of the sales!

That's what I got so far, most of the other games on sale usually don't interest me at all. I didn't even know there were so many generic strategy games out there. And I generally refuse to even look at things that are Pay 2 Win.

Ys The Oath in Felghana
Dear Esther
Left 4 Dead 2 (Did a few streams playing that already (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSSQUzKBokU&feature=plcp))

Batman Arkham City DLC
Burnout Paradise: Ultimate Box

Dungeons of Dredmor
Magicka (If anyone wants to play multiplayer, I'm definitely up for it)
The Walking Dead
Indie Bundle (Gemini Rue, Greed Corp, Audiosurf, Ys: Oath)

Gemini Rue is probably the only Point-and-Click that I've gotten through without getting stuck within the first five minutes. Sure glad I did because the plot is amazing. One of my favorite games of the year right now. I'm thinking about going through some other Point-and-Clicks but I'm not sure which to try next. Sam and Max? Monkey Island?

Greed Corp is hard as hell, still haven't gotten past the first level haha. But the Jazz soundtrack is so amazing. Wish I could actually download it.

Ys is also so damn difficult. The normal mobs are easy but the bosses are ridiculously hard. Even with grinding, they rip you apart. I wimped out and switched to Easy difficulty.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Still have it on the Xbox, but the emulator is less than... perfect. So, now I have it on the PC. Along with KotOR 2, which I bought way earlier.

So here's something fun: I bought a four-pack of Borderlands Regular Edition instead of the similarly priced Game of the Year Edition and I feel like an utter chump. I'm trying to bargain with Steam Support but I don't think they want to help me.

Outside of that, I bought a whole bunch of great games including The Walking Dead, which is currently leading the pack of my "Early contenders for Game of the Year" list.

Started playing New Vegas last night and am thus far enjoying it. I like the world, the in-game culture and the unusual perks/stats system, don't like the somewhat confusing controls and settings, and the fact that my first save turned out to be "corrupted" which got my computer stuck in an endless loading screen when I tried to continue my game.Ended up having to revert to an autosave file and lost about 20 minutes of gameplay.

Basically it seems to be a lighter version of Skyrim with guns and more options for playing dress-up. I like it though.

Ramary

I would not call it lighter version of Skyrim, considering I actually gave a shit about the story and setting in New Vegas.

07-24-2012, 12:32 AM
I meant in terms of gameplay and the overall feel of the game. Collecting food from plants, random cosmetic outfits in addition to actual armor, open world, having the option to just loot a place blind down to the paperweight on the desk and the empty cans in their dumpster... it just feels like Skyrim With Guns. Not that that's a bad thing, necessarily.

Although so far, yeah, the story is much more interesting.

....if there's a Cowboy Sheogorath in this game, it'll be the greatest thing ever.

A Zarkin' Frood

New Vegas uses the Oblivion engine, so yeah, there are going to be similarities to TES games. It's also where the game's problems come from. (like the crashes, which didn't happen a lot to me, but other people really seemed to get a lot of crashes)
