'cause fuck me...

So, as some of you might be already in the knowing, i was looking at Magic online just to rekindle the old memories... then, a old friend of mine (to whom i gave all my cards to when i stopped playing) heard about it and got super excited, cause he wanted to go back and try it again. For fun, or maybe even step foot in the competitive scene...

Talk goes and comes and now i'm knee deep in Magic cards again...

Hooray me.

7 Years off, and i just jumped right back into M13. Just the frame this beautiful picture, i got some money back my brother had borrowed (and that i had forgot about) and now i'm waiting for about 625 brand new M13 cards to hit my door. While my friend got about 400+ cards coming his away.

So, i'm clueless, rusty as hell (last time around the best strategy i had was Elves for X mana then Fireball to hell and back) and let's see where this goes...

I however DID forget about one of the dark rules of MTG... never go ebay window shopping if you don't have the money for it.

I mean, c'mon... Progenitus?

http://magiccards.info/scans/en/cfx/121.jpg

T'hell am i going to do with that...? Wait hold on a minute...

Oh crap...

Well... i'm certainly back...

Anybody else into the madness?

If you're buying M13 packs, draft it. M13 is a blast to draft. I've drafted it like five times now, and every time it's a blast.

I love core sets for the draft format, mainly.

only recently though, Before M10 drafting a core set was an awkward and painful experience and I never enjoyed it.

YOu picked a pretty good place to come back, M13 is an amazing set, Return to Ravnica will be pretty rad too

It seems pretty interesting though and i do want to try drafting. It kinda makes me feel old though

When i left Equipment cards was just starting to be announced and i was like "Oh this seems like an interesting concept" now i'm back and it's like "Planeswalkers, Foils and Mythicals? WTF is going on?!"

Foils have been about 1 in 7 packs since... Urza's Legacy?

Yeah, i followed the news up to Mirrodin, but back then around here it wasn't all that popular it was quite niche actually, so the last set i recall having cards of was the Odyssey set. I might have seen a foil before but i hardly recall.

I've been reading up a bit though, trying to think of new ways to play. I certainly have enough cards to put together a few decent decks, and i was always fond of Green/Red decks... the only "quirky" deck i had ever putted together was a full Artifact deck.

I didn't even know Magic had a God card. Guess I was wrong to think it didn't. XD

I started playing in high-school but I stopped after a year of playing and getting owned. Regardless of that I still bought decks on occasion. And I just recently got back into the game. Right now I run a White and Black deck centered around angels and demons (kinda). Though I might just play online for the most part.

Dude, it's been four years. I don't think you need to specify that core sets are different now, after four years of them being different.

Plus, if you REALLY wanted to be picky, the core sets have only really been designed for drafting since like M12.

BTW you guys heard of Pauper magic?

A couple of guys i talked to around here said it was hardly even known in the US and abroad.

Pauper Magic is essentially regular Magic but you can only build a deck with Common cards. And it works as a "Sub type" style that you apply to other Game styles like Legacy and Standard.

Thing is, The "scene" here country-wise is quite set apart there ain't much inter connection between players, stores and events. So you have a small pot of people who rush to get the "top cards" for their "Top decks" and you have a bunch of people who can't afford singles and pay cheap for heaps of cards with tons of commons to play around and have fun with.

DarkDrgon

.....This is how you know I've been playing this game way too long. 4 years and I still consider it brand spanking new.

BTW you guys heard of Pauper magic?

The place around here, that I normally go to, runs Pauper on the weekends, and I've been trying to get into it. I'm a bit unclear on the rules regarding commons that have been moved to uncommon in later sets, though. Are you allowed to use those?

The store used to run Standard pauper, but changed to Legacy after people were complaining about the poor selection of commons in Standard, and I have to agree. I've got pauper on the back burner though, right now.

Bells
07-22-2012, 01:56 AM
on the Wizard's website it says it's just a Constructed deck using nothing but commons, actually it says it's a Online mode, so i guess people have been adapting to desk play, which actually makes sense... if you buy and play soon enough you have a couple hundred commons around with no use... might as well put them to the challenge.

I'll probably make a Pauper deck to keep on reserve just for fun, but i'm looking to have a Legacy and a Standard deck with 2 sideboards, one Standard and one to convert it to Extended

rpgdemon
07-22-2012, 02:05 AM
Save your time and money, and don't play Legacy.

Legacy is the most broken, unfun format ever. It's defined by single turn win combos, and can come down to games of solitaire, whoever ends up comboing off first. Plus, it's CRAZY expensive to get into.

Like, there are some draws to legacy (You get to use (almost) all the cards in the game), but it's really just completely broken in terms of power level.

As for Extended, Wizards seems to be phasing it out, and instead supporting Modern, which allows all cards that have been printed since 8th Edition (A general rule is, if it's in the modern frame, it's legal, though there have been cards printed in duel decks and such that are not legal in Modern, but have a modern frame), so you might consider building for that instead. It really depends on what's being run around you, though.

Modern can be pretty expensive to get into as well, but it's less broken, and Wizards wants to reprint Modern staples, to lower their prices. They can't reprint Legacy staples, because of a promise that was made when Magic was starting (Called the Reserved List), that they wouldn't reprint 80% of the rares of any set, so that they could retain collectors value.

DarkDrgon
07-22-2012, 03:42 AM
Modern is an awesome format, and I've been seriously considering using it to get back into competitive magic. I'm playtesting a version of RedDeckWins for it, which is reasonably priced and pretty fun to play

Bells

from a quick overview, it seems Modern lives inside standard, so it shouldn't be restrictive at all to go that route, and it seems future-proof from what you guys are telling me, so great!

Also, in true form of me being back at this hobby i purchased a Promo Foil card at Ebay for more than the card was actually worth, and the guy charged me 6 Dollars to ship a single card.... dude is charging me the price of a 7 ounces international envelope to ship me a 0,06 ounces magic card.... unless the thing is encased in hard plastic i don't see it happening. Hope i get to cancel this...

With the exception of a few banned cards, any Standard deck is a Modern deck, but not every Modern deck works for Standard.

Also, eBay is probably the worst place to go to get prices and buy cards. I can suggest Channel Fireball as a pretty good source, but I usually buy from the store around here, because it's prices are great.

If you want to shop around, or get an idea of the price of a card, go to tcgPlayer. For example, here's it's page on the M13 Chandra:

http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/magic_single_card.asp?cn=Chandra,%20the%20Firebran d

It gives the highest price, lowest price, and mean price, as well as a link to every store selling it, and their prices. Just search whatever card you're looking for, and it'll give you those numbers.

Edit: ChannelFireball has the benefit of being run by good people, in addition to having generally fair prices. I had preordered something, and the price dropped, and on a whim I asked if I could get a discount, figuring I wouldn't. They said that normally they don't do that (For obvious reasons: The market's in flux and they don't ask for more money if the price goes up), but because I was a new customer they'd give me the money back as store credit.

And they do offer some great international shipping, beats ebay by a Mile!

Now i just need to get Lucky on that Progenitus and Ulamog auctions and i'm golden with my "Fuck me? No, Fuck you!" Sideboard.

So, i'm pulling this thread up just cause there is no real need to make another one for the same subject, but here we go...

So, yesterday i finally got my hands on my first Booster Box of MTG 2013. Shared with a friend of mine to split the costs (and the boosters) and ended up with 18 Boosters for myself ...so, now i have 270 new cards.

3 of which were Mythics. That's some harsh card distribution let me tell'ya... but i got Jace Mind Adept, Primordial Hydra and Serra Avatar so that's nice...

that ended up shifting me from my old Red/Green to a possible Blue/Black

Seriously, you put Jace, Mind Adept and Sands of Delirium on the Table and watch your opponent flinch as you make him send 15-20 cards from the library to the cemetery each turn... it's fun, and everybody hates my deck right now.

But i also got the Premiere Green Deck, so i might use that as a base to get back into my Green/Red home.

Now i'm setting my eyes to Ravnica!

Legacy is really fun to play and cheap if you just play casually. Me and my friends usually play standard or commander formats. But we all own decks that are either extended or legacy. (Not sure how old extended is) The fun is definitely lost when you face those 1 turn win decks, but if it's casual with friends. Getting some rares from past sets to make decks isn't a bad thing.

M13 draft I went mono red and had such fun. Deck was built around dragons, firebreathing, and burn support, and whatever creatures that say target creature can't block when a Red spell is played. And another, when you play this card, you can steal an instant or sorcery from an opponent. Stole a Wit's End and made him discard his whole hand.

I've been playing since The Dark. I spend most of my days at work running around the WotC website forums.

I play mostly Legacy (1.5 for the rest of you Magic oldbies) and Draft every Friday night at my local game store. I just put the touches on my newest Modern format deck and now I'm looking to get something together for Standard since over 90% of my current Standard deck will be rotating out in a couple of months.

As far as Casual decks go, I've got at least thirty decks sitting around my room along with another fifty or so decklists stored in a Word file on my desktop waiting to be built. My colors of choice are Blue, Black, and White, and while I can play Green and Red just fine, Green just doesn't speak to me quite like the others do.

A few months ago I was in the mood for making TV/Movie cartoon theme decks.

I've been playing since around the time Urza's Destiny came out. I used to have a ton of deck designs laying around when I was younger but now I tend to keep my focus on 2-3 decks at a time. I ended up stopping shortly after Prophecy came out and came back briefly for Mirrodan. I didn't start up again until Time Spiral, then stopped again until a couple of months ago.

For awhile now I've been working on an Underworld Dreams deck which has replaced my old sliver deck as my favorite. My slivers were a blue/green deck with a couple of gold slivers tossed in that focused on dumping my opponent's library into the graveyard via shrieking sliver and millstone and controlling the board via telekinetic sliver.

My current Underworld Dreams that I made just a few days ago is black/red/green and definitely needs a few tweaks made to it. But I got tired of being public enemy #1 the moment UD hit the table (or even before) and decided to toss in some burn to supplement my lack of UD damage. Its designed primarily for use in group games and uses black for Underworld Dreams and Syphon Soul, green for Fog, Recollect, and Naturalize, and red for the best burn spells I happen to possess as well as a couple of Fortune Thieves as a last second fuck you. The UD damage is fueled by Howling Mines.

Blue is actually my favorite color to play but I hate mixing it with other colors unless I come up with a really fun concept. I generally toss in maybe 8 cards that will hurt people and make the rest counterspells and other control cards because I hate people.

today i tested my Jace deck with a friend...

Sands of Delirium + Jace, Mind Adept + Mind Sculpt = made him Discard 21 cards from his deck with 6 Mana. Totally fun.

Now we're discussing Commander. I wanted to do a commander Deck that Uses Sigarda, Host of Herons as commander. But that would limit my deck to White/Green. Which could be fine... but i'm hesitant. My friend on the other hand loved the idea and the first thing he said to me about his deck idea was "Cromat" and i just went "Ffffffffuuuuuu--"

Also, Tev... a Practical Handbook for the Boyfriend?

Also, Tev... a Practical Handbook for the BoyfriendGirlfriend bought it on a lark and filled it with a bunch of adorable commentary. Every now and again we get a book and take turns either riffing on it in the margins or leaving notes for the other later. Right now we're on "1000 ways to say I love you."

Also, White/Green is fine. You have tons of land fetch, all the green and white tutor effects, white's removal spells, and Captain Sissay.

I've been playing for QUITE a while... I think since around Odyssey or so? Had cards from before then, but wasn't really dedicated. Got started back up in Time Spiral, stopped for a bit because of college, and am playing a bit more thanks to one of my old friends.

I play Legacy every now and then, but not anywhere near the amount I used to. Considering more of what you see nowadays is either Combo, Delver, or Maverick? ...I dunno, just find it kinda boring.

It could also be due to my horrendous losing streak, but that's something else ENTIRELY. Maybe.

Anyway, I've been playing EDH/Commander more and I find it to be a lot of fun. Especially when some people start yelling at each other for no reason or calling your move bullshit. Great times.

Currently have a G/W deck that uses http://gatherer.wizards.com/Handlers/Image.ashx?multiverseid=89110&type=card as my general. Basic concept is make tokens, make tokens HOLY CRAP HUGE and beat for the win. Alternatively, make lots of tokens, use http://gatherer.wizards.com/Handlers/Image.ashx?multiverseid=218044&type=card and poison people to death. Hilarious times for all, that.

Also building another EDH deck that's mono-black, using http://gatherer.wizards.com/Handlers/Image.ashx?multiverseid=21328&type=card as my general. Lots of tutors, creature recursion with big creatures, and a slight amount of dickery later, and I'm pitching http://gatherer.wizards.com/Handlers/Image.ashx?multiverseid=25797&type=card for a 1-hit general kill. Maybe not the best, but I find it hilarious. Now I just have to cut 12 cards from my current deck list...

I've been drafting a lot lately. Like... for the past 5 weeks. All M13.

Did you guys know that white is ABSURDLY powerful in M13? throw a few random Exalted cards in any draft deck, and you become AMAZINGLY better! it breaks stalemates, makes a ton of ok cards awesome, and gives you focus.

Tonight I attacked with a Stuffy doll, up to 7/8 with exalted and the abovementioned Rancor. Opponent at 5, either Die or Block with his only open creature... a 5/5 beast.

:D

Bells

Exalted is a beast, a ability i totally took for granted first. It works great in Black too...

Actually Black is a lil bit of a Jack of all trades in my eyes.... you have the life stealing, the discarding, the exalting, the fliers, the grave digging... It's a real toolbox in there.

Actually Bells, I'd suggest http://gatherer.wizards.com/Handlers/Image.ashx?multiverseid=207915&type=card for a sliver deck. Sliver tutors whenever you're able to cast your general and have mana available? ...doesn't seem OP at all, nope.

Also Sliver Queen with Mana Echoes is infinite mana and slivers. I was on the receiving end of that, and it is pretty funny to see happen.

BahamutFlare
08-28-2012, 05:48 PM
Maybe put a training grounds to make a tutor for 1 mana.

This combo wouldn't be that good because of the luck required to get it off, but play Xenograft naming Slivers would make every creature you control Sliver. Now if you could donate that card to someone else easily, then You pay 3 (Or 1 if training grounds is out) to gain control of any creature your opponent has.

If you do run Xenograft, you could run other token producers. My favorite being Awakening Zone. Get a token that can sac for 1 mana. Useful for chump blocking or mana. Now that I think about it, it'd be neat if it gets pulled off. But it relies too much on other cards that don't fit the flavor of the Sliver deck. I'm not sure how well your deck works with cards that aren't Slivers.

Regardless, I know some slivers give every sliver things like regenerate for some mana. Or other abilities that cost mana. That would reduce those costs a lot.

Quote from a previous MTG thread not too long ago...

There is also a completely free program called LackeyCCG (http://www.lackeyccg.com/) that enables you to download play many of the collectible card games like Magic the Gathering, Yugi-oh and that sort of thing. It's not exactly classy, but if you just want to play casually, it's a fairly good tool.

That's the program I've used by far. Got pictures, but much like apprentice, the tools are bare-bones so you have to manually deal with all the functions. I know that Relm and Dantefalcon also use it (they introduced it to me for that matter). Been a bit busy, but I've been thinking of a new commander deck...

I like Lackey because it lets me play a ton of dead games, Like the Yu Yu Hakusho TCG. other than the outrageous power creep, it was a fantastic game.

...Mind is blown.

Like, I was kind of disappointed in how they reprinted that thing, since it was kind of boring, but now? Now it is pretty swell.

Suddenly... Saprolings.

So, with 7 mana down (not absurd for Green), you have Corpse Jack and Death's Presence on the table... you bring Primordial Hydra with 7 mana. Making it a 5/5 which Corpse Jack turns into a 10/10 trample on the spot. If the oponnent doesn't respond to it on the spot... next turn the Hydra turns 20/20 which Corpsejack turns into a 40/40 trample.

Play Fungal Sprouting, and tap for LoL

New Niv Mizzet. He will make a great addition to my Niv Mizzet EDH deck. NOt as a commander though since I made the whole deck based around drawing. And the new one supports the old one very well for commander.

Semi-COnfirmed that there will be a new Planeswalker, Female, and she appeared briefly on the trailer.

So, the new Planeswalker is either from Golgari or Selesnya. Which means Black/Green or Green/White

If it's Black Green, there is a huge change it's a Gorgon...

If that's the case i'll be cemented as a Golgari Guy... in the pre-release you'll have to pick a guild, and you'll get 5 Ravnica packs and 1 Guild pack. And i totally want that Golgari pack... also you'll get the promo for the guild, which are these ones...

Golgari is going to be huge this coming standard. Also, this is the first set since Time Spiral to make me care about standard!! and I'm officially involved in a local Modern league. I'm back on the constructed scene :D

Now that the whole set is spoiled, I'm not sure what guild pack I want. The best gold cards were def golgari and rakdos, but monocolored red and black just didn't impress me. Blue was decent, had flyers which always does good in draft. Green seemed amazing with a lot of scavenge. White had a good amount of power.

I'm actually leaning Azorious or Seles (GW) Not sure how to spell it and I don't want to look it up atm.

I'm going Golgari because of the aforementioned Best colors for standard post-rotation, and because (to put it bluntly) I'm good at sealed and even with a bad limited pool I can at least make top 6 at my store.

i`ll go Golgari simply cause it seems like a lot of fun... Rakdos was lagging behind badly, but now it looks quite good. they did a very nice job balancing these guilds out!

U/W also seems powerful simply because Detain can be such a pain in the ass... potentially. And Selesnya (the G/W guild) is just flexible enough that i see myself leaning towards it a bit more now... Dryad Millitant is really a game changer. As is Ash Zealot.

Rakdos was lagging behind badly, but now it looks quite good. they did a very nice job balancing these guilds out!I disagree.

The Rakdos guild cards look like they were costed with "pain-casting" in mind as the guild mechanic, and then when Development dropped it for Unleash they forgot re-adjust the casting costs. At least they left the mechanic on Rakdos, himself, so that I can see how the guild was supposed to work.

Honestly, I find unleash so boring it makes me depressed. I was really hoping Rakdos would get something exciting to make up for (the similarly boring) Hellbent, but it was not to be. :( Paincast would have been actually fun.

Unleash doesn't have any excitement to it. The only thing exciting about Unleash is, "Look! It's a card marginally above the curve!" And that's nothing that the mechanic is doing, is my biggest problem with it. It's just a card that happens to be aggressively cost.

When the "Wow factor" of your mechanic is that the cards with it are cheaper than they should be, you really need to rethink it. Like, the mechanic itself contributes nothing to it's own wow factor.

Bells
09-20-2012, 02:04 PM
well, yeah... Unleash is pretty un-special. Although the overall play fits with the flavor of the guild. but you still get some pretty great cards, although... certainly i`m not as hyped to play red as i am pretty much every single other color on this set...

Izzet is clearly where it's at you guys.

Is anyone else attending a pre-release next weekend?

09-20-2012, 04:54 PM
I will be. I signed up for Rakdos... well, just because I like the color combo honestly. And thinking about it, Unleash, boring as it may be, could potentially be half decent in sealed. Could just be deluding myself on that one, but we'll see.

Of course, if I get a chance to get the big man himself, then hell yeah it was worth it. Don't care how much he'll be worth, I just love his flavor (which really just reminds me that Paincasting should have been their mechanic).

rpgdemon
09-20-2012, 05:19 PM
I think it will be effective, it's just SO boring. Their mechanic is, "We undercosted some R/B cards."

BahamutFlare
09-20-2012, 05:54 PM
I'm going GW. Any green scavenge cards plus populate is going to be nasty. No matter what, I can make some small guy into a threat. Or hopefully, I can create a bunch of 3/3 centaurs and use white for flyers.

I really want to make an Azorious deck after the draft. And I'm still tempted to pick Azorious as my guild, but I really don't want to do control.

Bells

Man, Detain is absolute killer right now where not many decklists are made or even proven on the field...

I still think that one of the best creatures overall is Ash Zealot, which is pure Red so you can splash it easily around. But you also have Sluiceway Scorpion and that alone made me want to go Golgari on this pre-release.

BEFORE everything was previewed, and people were all, "I want Izzet! Izzet is the best!", I was all, "I want to play Golgari, since that will probably not be played."

Now everyone wants to play Golgari at the prerelease. I might just play whatever's left over.

DarkDrgon

I changed my mind back. I'll be repping Izzet at the prerelease. All the people at my store who play standard preregistered for Golgari.

I will do my best to CRUSH them with my Blue/Red goodness!

So went Green/White for D1 and Azorious with a splash of green D2. I won first place in both! I am amazing at sealed and awful in everything else. Prob got 1.5 boxes of it because of the winnings. I am so pumped!

I went Azorius, and was sad because I didn't get anything fun or really useful in my pool. And the guy to my right opened almost EVERY Azorius toy that I wanted to play with.

And the guy to my left pulled four mythics, and it was hilarious.

I went Golgari and plowed through everyone I ran across up until the end when I got shut down by an overloaded Cyclonic Vortex as I swung in for lethal damage in game three against an Arzorius player. I was one board-sweeper away from first place when victory was snatched away from me by the jaws of defeat.

EDIT: One of my friends went Izzet to be the Hypersonic Dragon and ended up opening two more of them in his sealed pool so he was playing with three of them all day.

EDIT 2: In other news (http://missoulian.com/news/local/argument-over-fantasy-card-game-lands-missoula-man-in-jail/article_1e35d5bc-0bf3-11e2-a89c-0019bb2963f4.html), someone must not have taken the pre-release so well....
An argument over a fantasy card game allegedly turned violent over the weekend, according to Missoula police.

Houston Siracusa, 29, was charged with assault with a weapon, a felony, in connection with the incident shortly before midnight Saturday.

Siracusa was among the people playing Magic: The Gathering at a home in the 3100 block of Washburn Street, according to Missoula Police Detective Sgt. Bob Bouchee.

One of the men there said that Siracusa pulled a knife during an argument and slashed his leg, according to charging documents in his caes.

A police officer saw a 3- to 4-inch bleeding cut on the victim’s lower left leg, according to an affidavit filed by Assistant Chief Deputy County Attorney Jennifer Clark.

The man ended up with 15 stitches, according to the Missoula County Attorney’s Office.

Ok, RTR is fucking awesome... i'm probably going Black/Green with either Red or Blue in there.

So, Let me ask this... i'm looking for a couple of cards

Fable of Wolf and Owl
http://gatherer.wizards.com/pages/card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=152087

Baleful Strix
http://gatherer.wizards.com/pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=265156

This is for collection only, cause i really love the artwork on these cards... these two will look awesome next to my Bassandra!

i COULD buy them (Baleful Strix is fucking expensive... but really good) but i wanted to give this a try. I have quite a few cards to trade ( Portuguese, English, Japanese and Chinese ), ranging from Innistrad (chinese) M13 (portuguese) and Return to Ravnica (English and Portuguese). Plus i have Planechase Savage Auras (and i'm thinking of buying Night of the Ninja only for the pair of Baleful Strix.) and a whole bunch of assorter cards.

So this is more like an idea for a Traders club, where people skip meta and price charts and simply trade what they don't want for what they want...
