Sylvan Tale is a Sega Game Gear game that bites the style of Zelda. However, instead of getting special tools to progress, you get special abilities and animal transformations. Also, all your health stuff is fruit themed. It's pretty fun and I recommend checking it out! I've been doing a video LP of it, which you can check out via the links below. Let me know if there are any problems with them.

Man, you're right, that is a lot like Zelda. Even the music sounds very Zelda-like. And it does tend to give hints without telling you exactly what to do like the old Zeldas, as you mention in the video.

You mention the spells/abilities (I've only watched one video so far), does that make it feel a little more like Crystalis but with more intelligent dungeon design ala Zelda? I"m speaking more to whether or not the spells have both offensive purposes and puzzle purposes like in Crystalis (whereas in Zelda the items you get tend to mostly be for combat OR puzzle purposes 90% of the time, with maybe one or two of the other invented for it, whereas with Crystalis it seemed like mostly combat oriented abilities and once in a while you have to knock down a wall or something).

I'm reminded of Illusion of Gaia in certain respects. The way he jumps down onto stuff, mostly.

Oh, man, I remember beating that game in three days because I rented it. It was pretty rad.

I remember being stuck in that game for years because I couldn't figure out how to do the Psycho Spin after I picked it up at the Great Wall. Specifically, I knew how to make him start windmilling his arms, but I couldn't figure out how to turn into a tornado from there.

Wound up playing the entire game up to that point again, and then figuring out how to do it. I was young and stupid. Still a great game.

Watched a few more videos. The menu seems a bit annoying to have to go through every time you switch forms. But overall it's a pretty cool mechanic.

I said that some of it reminded me of Illusion of Gaia. At least in this game, the alternate forms don't obsolete the main form, like Freedan and Shadow did for Will. I mean, when did you ever want to be in the Will form, especially after you got Dark Frier?
