Cause $299 for a current gen console is a little too much.
http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/727914/nintendo-wii-u-release-date-and-price-revealed/
The Wii U has a release date. Nintendo's console will be released on November 18. It will come in two versions, a Basic and Deluxe set. The Deluxe set will cost you $349 and the basic version will run $299.
As we learned during Nintendo's Japanese press event last night, the Wii U will have 2GB of memory, 1GB for games and 1 GB for system memory. Its discs will have a 25GB capacity and are not Blu-Ray. It will be backwards compatible with the Wii. Additionally, the console will support all Wii accessories straight out of the box.
The Premium bundle will come with a console, a controller, an HDMI cable, power cradles for your Wii U pad, a 32 GB HDD, and a subscription to Nintendo Network Premium which offers 10% discounts on downloadable software, while the Basic bundle will come with just the console, a controller, and an 8GB HDD.
“The wait is almost over — in just 66 days, Wii U will arrive with the strongest lineup of launch software in Nintendo history,” said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime in a statement. “With the integrated second screen of the included GamePad and features that instantly enhance the way people play games, watch video and interact with each other, consumers will see how Wii U delivers a completely unique experience."
Remember how the 3DS didn't break sale records for Big N? Yeah this might be a repeat of it.
Granted I do know why they choose that price, (the U-Pad is expensive) it's still a bad move since it's only barely stronger then the PS3/360.
And it's games are mostly the same. I hate to say it but Nintendo is going to be joining the ranks of Sega and Atari pretty soon.
What a shame but hey if they do bail out next next gen maybe sega will give the whole hardware thing another go again. It seemed like they learned their lesson from the Saturn and 32X/CD failures.

$300 to do what my PS3 does at just $250 and soon to be $200.
Yeah, I'll still buy the Wii U sometime in 2013, but oh big N, I think this might your final swan song.
I hope all their best franchises get to go out with a bang with amazing new titles. Just incase.

Nintendo is out of the console race now, if they're lucky they can still salvage handhelds if they figure out a way to make the 3DS good enough to have almost all of their new games on it, and even then I'm doubtful.

All that I can take away from this thread is that you're calling Nintendo "Big N" and it just sounds so silly.

What's wrong with that? I like calling them Big N, don't know why I just do. X3
Nintendo bailed on competeing a whole gen ago.
They're just doing their own thing now. Kinda like how Leapster makes and has a gaming handheld console but is still around dispite not competing with Nintendo and Sony.
The only ones who think Nintendo is still fighting Sony and MS is Nintendo of America who didn't get the memo from Big N Japan.
In other news Micheal Pachter Likes the Wii U!
http://nintendoeverything.com/index.php/98940/pachter-has-some-praise-for-wii-u/
Wedbush analyst Michael Patcher has been one of the Wii U’s toughest critics, and hasn’t exactly shared a lot of love for Nintendo in general. But he was apparently impressed with what Nintendo brought to its press event today.
In a series of tweets, Patcher praised the Wii U pricing and software lineup. Patcher was surprised with the types of games that were shown, even saying that it “was better than I expected”.
“I think Nintendo is pricing right, will capitalize on fervent fans who will buy at this price. 2013 alternatives become pretty compelling. I expect competition from lower priced 360/PS3 bundles, the Kindle Fire, iPad Mini. All could be competitive for mass market. The Wii U software lineup was better than I expected, third party support pretty solid, and Nintendo titles high quality.”
Pachter also weighed in on the manufacturing situation for Wii U:
“I expect global manufacturing of 1 million Wii U’s per month, starting now. That means 7 million produced and shipped through March. We should see roughly 30% of units shipped to U.S., Europe, Japan with 10% ROW. There are at least 2 million fervent fans in each geography.”
Well, I have to say it's a bit of a shock but also confirms that we are all totally gonna die in December.
EDIT: Some of Wii U's Specs.

- Games only use 1GB of main memory
- System memory is for the OS
- Can use the browser while playing
- Game discs are 25GB
- Discs run at 22.5 MB/s
- Uses up to 75 watts of electricity
- Typical power usage is 45 watts

Those specs are leaps and bounds above the 360, at bare minimum. I'm not sure about the rest of the specs, but if they stack similarly, it is definitely a more powerful console.
$50 is not going to make or break the WiiU. The branding might, but that's a whole different issue. This doesn't spell doom for Nintendo. Look at the Gamecube days, they went through that without going under, and riding on the boom of the Wii, they're not going to be able to flop unless they make a series of spectacularly terrible decisions. Pricing at $300 is not one of those spectacularly terrible decisions.
I thought the Wii outsold the PS3 and the XBox 360. Like wasn't Nintendo selling off Wii's so fast that their production side couldn't keep up with demand for a while there?
I wouldn't count Nintendo out of anything.

I'm not too worried when sony and microsoft are almost certainly going to price their next consoles over $500 at the minimum.
the whole "NINTENDO IS FINISHED" meme comes because dedicated gamers don't like nintendo products but don't seem to get that they are not the whole of the market audience.

This is a lot cheaper than just my video card. What's the issue?

They broke their $250 streak, and folks are worried about the 720 and PS4 causing trouble for Big N.

Relatively strong launch title compared to previous launches;
Price point lower than other next gen console releases will be;
Backwards compatible with games, and peripherals;
No competition in market (That is, no other new consoles are releasing at that time);
Confirmed Significantly improved hardware;
3DS and WiiU cross compatibility with some titles already announce (Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate).
75 watt power cap use means this console will consume roughly $75 worth of hydro over the year; your Television will likely cost more to be running.
Why is this thread.
Edit: 720 I don't even

Err, ahem.
Wii = 96.56 million units sold
Nintendo sure sells a lot of these things for being huge failures at the console game. Clearly they will quit making consoles soon.

You know what, 1080 has a nice ring to it. Wouldn't be a bad name choice for the next X-Box. IMO
Welll reguardless the Wii U is coming November. And I have no money to buy it. (this damn economy)
...Anyone want commissions?

Learn this and take it to hear: In console gaming, early adopter always get screwed. Always.

It's got Monster Hunter, they'll be fine. The great screw up is not being 2006 anymore, meaning I don't have the extra cash to buy videos and a new TV to play them on. Like, even if it were $250, just can't do it. Maybe someone will leave a broken one at the theater and I can adopt it, Baby-Moses-in-the-reeds-style.

Well, if you trade in your current Wii at gamestop, it's $240 plus tax. Though one may want to pressure the BEG EN to allow transfer of Virtual Console and WiiWare stuffs from Wii to Wii U to mitigate the upgrade.
As is, I have a modded Wii, so no trade in for me. But i'm also dirt poor, so no Wii U for me either, so it works out!

I could use something about the size of the WiiU to prop up my elbow at my desk, actually.
Lego City Undercover sounds awesome.

Can't you just store all your channels and VC games on an SD card and transfer 'em to the Wii U? Or is that not a thing?
And I swear I've heard the term "Big N" since, like, the era of the N64.

Already confirmed, and thank go they decided to allow that.
Taken from an interview from Engadget:
“You can plug in a full-on three terabyte hard drive if you want. I’ll love you as a digital consumer. The reason we did it that way is that the cost of that type of storage memory is plummeting. What we didn’t want to do is tie a profit model to something that’s gonna rapidly decline over time. We’ll let the consumer buy as much as they want, as cheaply as they want.”

Big N's never been much of a fan for multimedia but theymight make more stuff compatible via USB.
Only time will tell.
