So I'm surprised that no one has linked this yet, but Obsidian has recently been teasing a new game project, and then a day ago put up a kickstarter for it. It got fully funded within a day. I figure there may be some of you interested in seeing this, and I for one, am very excited for it.

I'll back this up as soon as they provide as stretch goals:
1- No DRM
2- Allowing players to customize, hire and create NPC's for their party that are not story-related (maybe an extra Companion slot)
3- MOD support
4- Online support (a "GM Mode" if you will...)
than this game will have me on board. I mean, i know this is a top class team working on this... but at the same time, what they provide is very... very... generic. It's a passion project, sure... but that's not enough.
I take in account the Ogre Kickstarter or pretty much all the other big ones, where they really let their backers add in stuff to the game design and shape their experience. This is the kind of project where this stuff would be perfect for, but it isn't there...

My big excitement with this is that it's a full professional title, but with the freedom for player influence that comes from not needing a few specific investors to please and rely on. I'm definitely going to follow this even if I don't back it, since what they're going for could go very, very well.

No DRM is a stretch goal already just saying. Also it's Obisidian even if the goal isn't met chances are it will be Steamworks.
Also Bells they've said to suggest things on their forum pretty sure.
What you said about mods, GMing and party creation is a point. I have heard they're considering a SoZ model where you can create party members and recruit ones with personalities backstories etc but apparently that's still up in the air.
Slightly related, Obsidian former workers held a kickstarter for Steam Bandits (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/iocainestudios/steam-bandits-outpost-0?ref=live), the first in a series of transgames(Nothing to do with gender here).
