Bit of backstory here: the lead guy on this is Tiy, the lead visuals guy that worked on terraria alongside digisomething something or other, left the terraria team when the head dev called it stopsville on terraria. Tiy started Chucklefish with some chums and have been working on Starbound.

Suppose it can be considered the spiritual successor to Terraria, starbound turns things up to 11. Almost everything from the weapons to entire planetary generation to creatures and their behavior is done procedurally.

They have a very spiffy development roadmap (http://playstarbound.com/roadmap/) for perusing the game's details.

It opened up preorders yesterday and it gained well over $200,000 under 12 hours. pretty damn impressive!

Figgered i'd post about it here seeing as we have a number of terraria fans that might be interested in this.

Onto the meaty visuals of the subject!

Call me wacky, but I rather do like barren environments. I hope I can find a place to touch base on that is like this one, which I assume is the Moon biome that I've seen referred to on the official forums.
moon biome? and some blocks. (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/10003158/blocks.png)

It's the little details like using construction lasers and such instead of blocks just being plopped down.

A bit of the water physics demonstrationarying.

I'm looking forward to it. Hope it lives up to the concept.

So, this is like they are doing a Kickstarter, but without kickstarter... and all rewards are in-game so there is no overhead cost with Rewards for pledges.

This is actually very clever...!

The game itself looks pretty fun, although i wan'st able to actually get into Terraria...

Holy crap. I really hate auto-complete on my phone. Gotta turn that shit off.

Anywho, I've been keeping tabs on the amount of preorder funds they've been getting since they opened preorders. Tossed some cash their way, gold tier with a lil' extra just 'cause, since I know they'd put it to better use than I would. Would've just spent it on booze and snacks!

Even though the 'stretch goal' was added in as a secondary thought it looks like they'll hit $500,000 in no time flat and bring on someone to do the assets for the Novakid race. Not a big fan of the name, but they're spiffy enough to overlook that.

Apparently they demolished the competition in Indie Game Mag's most anticipated game of 2013 poll at 46% of votes. Pretty impressive!

500k Goal reached, the 750k Stretch goal is fossils! Also, this thread needs more screenshots and video links

Linked a couple videos, would have some pictures posted as well but it seems the forum isn't liking images posted from my dropbox for some reason. Ah well. Linked them instead.
