A few weeks ago, Nintendo announced that they were acquiring 3 Sega exclusive titles. All Sonic games, one of which is Sonic Lost World, a 3D plat former similar to Sonic Generations and Sonic Colors (it technically counts).

Nearly a week later they revealed 6 unknown characters that would play a role in Lost World. And now just a week after, we have a trailer.

I bet I know what you're thinking. "This is obviously a Mario Galaxy rip off ergh!" Ah but that may only be partially true. You see while this game does borrow elements from Mario Galaxy such as the gravity gimmick and the addition of Mario's traditional run button (buttons in this case as Sonic will have 2). But this game also closely resembles another game that was lost to the ages, that never got released nor finished, Sonic Xtreme for the Sega Saturn.

I'm not saying this theory is true, but it is quite possible that Lost World is in ways, a nod to Sonic Xtreme. Especially since technically Sonic Xtreme was briefly revived back in 2010/2011 as a fan game project by it's original lead programmer and creator but sadly was canned again shortly after due to development issues. It might not have gained much attention, but a lot of info about the game did start pouring in around that time.

Anyway more info about Lost World.

The game sees players once again take on the role of Sonic the Hedgehog as he travels to a world known as Lost Hex and faces against a band of villains known as the Deadly Six. Similar to the cancelled Sonic X-treme, gameplay takes place on spherical worlds that shift in perspective, allowing for both 2D and 3D gameplay, with level designs largely influenced by earlier Genesis-era games. A new control system has been created for this game which fits in with the levels. Moving the directional controls will move Sonic at a moderate pace, whilst holding down a trigger button will engage his running speed, with an additional trigger rolling Sonic into a speedier ball form. A parkour system is introduced, allowing Sonic to maneuver across obstacles and run up walls whilst the run trigger is held. The game will also feature Color Powers, which are similar to the Wisp powers of Sonic Colors, and a Support Mode where a player using the Wii U GamePad can assist another controlling Sonic with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. Along way, Sonic can rescue small animals by destroying badniks, Red Rings which unlock additional content and Gold Cannons that unlock new paths.

*Levels include ‘Wind Hill’ & ‘Desert Ruins’
*Desert Ruins consists of a Cake, Candy and sweet themed environment.
*Sonic builds up speed slowly, the player decides when he wants to go faster and then with another button decides when he wants to unleash the next level of speed.
*Parkor system, designed to allow players to navigate objects at speed without coming to a dead stop.
*Wisp’s are back, as are the wisp powers.
*2 player “support” mode confirmed.
*Sonic is the only playable character.
*Tails, Knuckles & Amy appear in the story, they are not playable.
*The planet is called ‘Lost Hex.’
*Rescuing animals will influence various unlockable content.
*Red Rings are back.
*Gold cannons are used to unlock secret/alternative paths.

We'll be seeing more of this game at e3.

Sonic Xtreme was my most anticipated game as a youngling, before the whole "evaporating into thin air with the death of the Saturn" thing. If I were more naive, that would make me interested in this game by itself. The Sonic Xtreme connection, however, is enough to keep me from immediately deciding "Sonic after 'Sonic 3' = junk = no buy," which is something.

At first I thought the level design was weird, then I thought back to the original games, yea thats pretty similar.

I really love that they brought back the Spin Dash. Now I wonder if it's as flexible as the one in SA1.

I would break out into song, but I'm not actually that hype for it. So here's my not-yet-hype breaking out into song.

This could be good, but I'll wait and see. At the very least if Nintendo is taking the reigns then Mario and Sonic crossovers will be easier for them to churn out (Street Fighter X Tekken X Mario X Sonic anyone? What if Platinum Games did it?).

Looks like you can do it on walls, which is pretty cool, in a "Screw you, physics!" kind of way.

Maybe that Sonic Team intervention worked and they're no longer high on cocaine all the time.

I just want to know how Wisps are on Lost Hex. Didn't they all return to their home planet, and then their home planet returned to its star system?

i just love how the "sonic's new walk cycle is back as being the figure 8 from previous game" because that's being presented as a Nostalgic callback, and yet, as a fast running walk cycle makes no fucking sense.

i love it.

The figure 8 walk cycle is the best fucking thing about Sonic, especially in the comics where it looks even more ridiculous.

Wasn't it a big oval in everything but CD?

I gotta admit, I'm going to really miss the boost and all the speed it had. Sonic will feel a lot slower now with ou-

Holy shit that spin dash is amazing! And it's back to being near broken again like it was in Adventure 1. XD

I also love how there's quite a bit of exploration in the levels to. It feels like it can appeal to both speed runners and players that just want to sit back and explore the Lost Hex in it's crazy lands.

...Wow that looks a LOT like Super Mario Galaxy.

Also that guy talking about video quality making videos from a console that's not even true 1080p.

Yeah there's no denying it now. Lost World barrows a lot from Galaxy. Though honestly I'm fine with this, there's nothing new under the sun and this game still looks pretty good so far. And kinda feels like a nice mix of Sonic and Mario.

Makes me really want that Sonic and Mario crossover platformer game to happen some day.

Whelp the game is out and long story short... it bombed.

With a sea of low ratings, it looks like the sonic cycle is back.

The WiiU loses another good game.

I'm still going to pick it up regardless, but it's sad that after two straight improvements, Sonic is back to being the local punching bag again.

The Sonic Cycle involves the game being actually bad.

I rather feel tha the reviews may well be a combinaion of reviewers expecting the Colors-style play style, and the general stigma surrounding Sonic games since 2006.

I'm still totally getting the game, so I cn figure out for myself which it is.

More reviews have came in. Right now the games seem to gaining a love it or hate reception.

And the fan base is in an uproar, split between the two sides.

Despite what the reviews say, I still like the game enough to want to own it.

Also, metacritic still puts it with twice more green reviews than yellow ones... so it's not THAT bad

i mean, if you consider Metacritic worth anything that is...

I dunno. Metacritic is weighted pretty low for me.
