So, Amazon started it's summer sale. Just another tell tale sign that the Steam Summer sale is upon us! Looming ever closer.

2 dates are on the calendar this year... July 4th and 11th. I bet a bit more on the 11th myself... but who knows? Steam is crazy that way...

So, are you looking forward to it? Are you saving up, looking for any special stuff?

This year thus far i have 5 games on my list

Alpha Protocol
Sonic Generations
Mirrors Edge
Dark Void
Tekken vs Street Fighter

Games i'm hoping will be 75% or cheaper this year. I have my budget, i have my game plan, and i'm not even going to LOOK at anything belo a 66% price cut. May be rough, but it's a way to spare some change.

Also, my personal tip... buy EVERYTHING as a gift. if you regret, you can trade it off. Here in the forums itself might be a good place, specially in bundles that might come with an extra copy of something you have. Gift those!

So, i have my wallet ready and my will checks ready to roll... how about you?

Arghs, I thought it had already started when I saw this thread. Now I must wait even longer to spend money!

Thanks to a few lucky drops in TF2 and the new trading cards I have a nice amount of Wallet ready. I have 3 definite purchases- Ys I and II (http://store.steampowered.com/app/223810), Ys Oath In Felgana (http://store.steampowered.com/app/207320), and Age Of Empires 2 HD (http://store.steampowered.com/app/221380). The rest of my wishlist (http://steamcommunity.com/id/nBnBB/wishlist/) is dependent on how good the discount is and how much I have left after those 3 games, but pretty sure I'm gonna grab Skyrim too.

I have my sights set on the Skyrim DLC, though I don't know why. That path leads to only pain.

I'm hoping Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes will go on sale. It'd also be nice if Company of Heroes 2 would go on sale, but since it was just released I don't see it happening. Same deal with SR4.

Currently debating on whether or not I really want Borderlands 2.

Bells
07-02-2013, 10:57 AM
there is already a huge Borderlands 2 + All DLC deal going around. I don't think steam is going to do anything better on that one...

Midweek deals end at 4 PM Valve time this week, so no summer sale this week.

Also my summer sale goal is to buy AS LITTLE AS I CAN. My backlog is a wordpad file with about 400 games listed on it. I now totally admit I have a problem.

New Crate added to TF2 drop list, along with associated key. (http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Summer_Appetizer_Crate#Summer_Appetizer_Crate)

I'd still like to know how a company can yank me around by the balls when I don't even have any.

I just realized I have a game I bought in the last steam sale that I never even installed on my computer. Oh god, I'm becoming one of those people!

That being said, I've got Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep on my wishlist, as well as Gunpoint, Recettear, Bioshock Infinite and a few others I'll be keeping an eye out for.

And maybe someday I'll get around to actually installing Deponia. Or finishing half the games I own (cough cough Skyrim, Fallout: New Vegas, Deus Ex Human Revolution cough cough). Or figuring out how to correctly play Terraria (seriously how do I build actual walls that keep monsters out?).

We should do a multiplayer server again sometime.

And get the season pass, not just Tina. So we can start new games and run wild and free and happy and things and I need sleep because three nights in a row without proper sleeeeeeeeeeeep

Yeah, I wouldn't expect Steam to beat Amazon sales this year. Amazon are getting extremely competitive now. F'instance, Mark of the Ninja is $3.71 over there right now. I very much doubt Steam would even match that. Sure their download service is ostensibly US-only, but it's extremely easy to circumvent and Amazon (almost certainly) deliberately take no measures in preventing that.

Oh, also, in regards to steam cards and their impact in the sale.

Crafting a game badge, every $10 spent in the sale, and voting on the community choice sale (if you're over steam level 5 to prevent abuse) will reward you with a Steam Summer Getaway card.

Crafting a Steam Summer Getaway badge will reward you the same useless crap crafting other badges will get you, i.e. emoticons and profile backgrounds.

Better gameplay, crazy-ass plot that'll no doubt send you scrambling for the nearest analysis article after you complete it. It's not 'scary' like the first two Bioshocks could be, though.

It's also cheaper here (http://www.greenmangaming.com/s/gb/en/pc/games/shooter/bioshock-infinite/). Even without the GMG20-F202F-UI40F for an extra 20% off.

Azisien

Opinions vary wildly, but Bioshock Infinite is my favourite of the Bioshock games. Wonderful game, though as it's a linear single player FPS, I don't see anyone getting more than one or two playthroughs out of it. If you go for a fairly completionist run, it'll take you about 13-15 hours. Totally worth $30 (and $60) in my opinion, but only if you have that much to spend.

and DANG IT. The Bio Inf. Season Pass was 50% off for the first hour or so of the sale, but that disappeared. I haven't been able to put a cart together, though, between the store page errors and my cart mysteriously emptying out if I add more than 1 or 2 items.

I come back and I find Dragonborn's decided to download itself.

Not sure what to make of this. I'm kinda concerned.

Hey, thanks! I've always been tempted to grab it in a sale, but ended up wimping out because I'm not sure how scary it is. Spooky/creepy/atmospheric and well-written, I'm okay with. As someone who has barely gotten more than 40 minutes into Amnesia (also, 20 of those minutes happened when I was showing a friend the game, so jokes made it significantly less scary) and can't bring up the nerve to play any further, I'm just going to say Bioshock is like a walk in a cheery, brightly lit park in comparison.

the one thing preventing me from picking up Brave new World is that it does not have Portuguese language option. Not a big issue to me necessarily, but for a game like this it really hampers my ability to play with a non-English speaking friend.

FTL is amazing, but I would frankly recommend that you cheat the hell out of it. A lot of the ship requirements are just a slog, particularly the last one. It's a lot more fun with everything unlocked from the start.

Maybe play enough to get to Sector 5 and unlock the Federation Cruiser and then do that.

I... guess this makes me feel better?? Meh, I'll youtube the first few levels before I play I guess.

The first Bioshock is occasionally scary; there are some decent jump scare moments and the atmosphere is pretty creepy. It's not primarily a horror game though and I, a gigantic wuss when it comes to horror, didn't have much of a problem playing it.

Bioshock Infinite really isn't a horror game in the slightest.

Okay, minus one sequence towards the end that creeped the hell out of me.

Both come highly recommended.

Civ 4 was given to people who pre-ordered Brave New World. This is because they put it for for sale for 33% off within a week, in fact it was THE DAY AFTER IT WAS OUT for Europe.

They did not even have the decency to also add in Beyond the Sword, Civ 4 is not that good without that x-pack, plus people who pre-ordered BNW most likely already had Civ 4. This is a pretty lame apology.

If anyone has a free copy of Civ IV that they're not going to use for anything, I'd be happy to take it off your hands. What does Beyond the Sword add?

A lot of new Civs and leaders, Corporations (like religions but business oriented), and Espionage (actually done well for a strategy game, gasp). And a bunch of other stuff. It's mostly expansion of the latter half of the game, after gunpowder units.

Doesn't it also have all the relevant Civ IV: Warlords content, besides the random scenario crap that barely anybody plays (citation needed)? That I'm not sure.

But in my humble opinion, Civ IV + BTS is the best Civilization has ever been, and it's one of the best TBS games ever made. Now that Civ V has gotten two expansion treatments as well, though, it's slowly gaining my favour. And about dang time.

All that stuff that Azi said, but more importantly, it adds a space scenario. As in you colonise planets. And an entirely new tech tree just for it. It is excellent.

How is Tomb Raider, incidentally? Been thinking about picking it up.

It is excellent also. I'm not even much of a usual Tomb Raider fan and I picked it up just cos it was going cheap only to have more fun with it than I did with Uncharted 3. Easily one of the best games of recent times.

I also just finished my first playthrough of FTL. I got as far as the first boss fight stage, but I was running low on missiles and I hadn't come across many good weapons the entire run, so I was slightly screwed.

At least I unlocked 2 new ships though.

It also makes forts awesome, changing them so that they connect resources on the tile, are affected by City Defense/Attack promotions, and act as canals for your ships to travel through, up to two spaces inland. They also act as airbases for your fighters and bombers.

Naval units can now use the Blockade command, which prevents the enemy from working or trading through any naval tiles in a three-tile radius, allowing you to figuratively and literally starve any coastal city dependent on the ocean. If your ships intercept any trade passing through, they'll pillage gold per turn.

Civilizations now have a Unique Building in addition to their Unique Unit. For instance, America gets the Mall instead of the Supermarket, which in addition to the usual bonuses increases gold income and happiness through Media resources, while the Inca replaces their Granary with Terraces for great city growth with a culture boost.

The Apostolic Palace has been added, which acts as a sort of mid-game, religiously-driven United Nations, complete with its own version of the Diplomatic Victory.

The game is just more awesome and NPF needs to get together and organize some Civ games.

It's not the best one IMO. If you are willing to go retro, my favourites are Heroes of Might and Magic II or III. They're both rather similar, so take your pick.

You can buy both at Good Old Games for $9.99 normally, and they are pretty frequently 50% off.

KSP is awesome, but it's one of those games where you need to play the tutorial. Orbital mechanics are really counterintuitive if you're not familiar with them.

There's also a bunch of tutorial vids and the like, which are really handy. (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYu7z3I8tdEm5nyZU3a-O2ak6mBYXWPAL) I linked you to Scott Manley, who does a bunch of ridiculously cool stuff with KSP, but there are some others.

It also a ridiculously extensive mod scene; I'd highly recommend Mechjeb (http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/showthread.php/12384-PART-0-20-Anatid-Robotics-MuMech-MechJeb-Autopilot-v2-0-8) to start, which is an autopilot.

But the New Vegas deal is tempting...

YOU CAN PUNCH SOMEONE IN THE FACE WITH A SHOTGUN WHAT MORE COULD YOU POSSIBLY WANT

But the New Vegas deal is tempting... New Vegas is basically Skyrim if Skyrim had guns, a better and more engaging plot, NPC helpers with actual character development, an actually MANAGEABLE amount of quests, and a gang of Elvis impersonators who give you a cyborg dog.

However, keep in mind that the game DOES earn its Mature rating in terms of adult themes (the crimes committed by bandits and Caesar's Legion are rather intense in some missions and can delve into some touchy subjects that might offend some people. Plus you have to deal with NPCs advertizing a strip club directly outside your base of operations which is annoying). If that sort of thing bothers you, take heed. It took a little while for me to get used to it, but it's still a great game.

If you like Total War and samurai, then Shogun 2 rules. But Rome 2 comes out in a little more than a month, and will most likely prove to be a far superior Total War game. And based on my observations, ancient Rome seems like a preferable time period to most.

Since I've logged a lot of hours of Shogun 2, I heavily recommend Fall of the Samurai. It's actually standalone, too, if you want. It's an excellent expansion, in my opinion better than core Shogun 2. But the purest samurai vs. samurai experience is still Shogun 2. Fall of the Samurai is if you want to re-imagine an incredible version of The Last Samurai, Total War style.

I haven't actually played any total war games

I wish I had discovered them earlier in my life, they quickly became my favourite strategy games of all time. Total War plays like one part Civilization (managing your clan/empire in the overworld) and the other part slow-paced RTS battlefield (for the inevitable battles). I like to toss in slow-paced because while it is certainly an RTS during combat, and a degree of micro-management is required, it isn't so demanding as StarCraft.

Taking the best parts of Civilization and combining them with the ability to field, potentially, tens of thousands of soldiers in massive battles, is just the best.

My one caution is it's a bit of a resource hog of a game, I hope you have a pretty solid CPU and graphics card.

Yes.

Asylum had, in my opinion, a much better plot and better character dynamics than City. City had better combat controls and a much larger cast of characters, which was cool, but Asylum had Scarecrow and a much more threatening Joker. Also, Asylum has no "Suddenly Here And Super Important Talia" time and that's great.

I'd recommend quite a lot more emphasis on "possibly".
It's just ridiculous how many people I know, online or otherwise, who have filled out large libraries in Steam despite only playing maybe one to ten of the games tops.

---------- Post added at 10:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:18 PM ----------

Also I've long since stopped getting all excited for games that I likely would play once and then not need to revisit again.

There are many titles on Steam, including many highlighted by these sales, that would fall under this category.

I suppose, if I'm honest, it doesn't mean any of them are bad games, but the way folks snatch up as many games as they can almost like it's some kind f competition is just lol.

But enough about that.

Also why do you screenshot the store? Everyone who reads this thread more than likely has Steam and is fully capable of opening the store view themselves.

Deadpool, as you all can see, is on a flash sale, though I caution folks that it doesn't necessarily keep up the excitement throughout the game. I am wary of its humor value for repeat playthroughs. With games like Borderlands and Saint's Row, at least the multiplayer and varying character creation add new mayhem and junk. However, in fairness, I still enjoy the Portal games, so it might be just fine!

I don't know the exact reason, but on more than one occasion the screencap was posted here letting me see the sales before the Steam servers could display the store page to me without an error message. And I'm not talking 5 minutes after the store gets updated, on a few days I was waiting 2-3 hours.

Also Deadpool kinda sucked and is at best a super bargain title (75% off or higher), I'd wait. First half had some genuinely entertaining parts but it drops off hard, and the gameplay is really only an obstacle in front of more Deadpool dialogue. The game is also criminally short, I finished it in six hours.

Pretty okay co-op game. I don't think I would find that much enjoyment out of it solo, but on the other hand, it would probably play differently solo. Alone, some semblance of order and stealth might be required. In co-op games, as far as my experience goes, it is absolute chaos and there's hardly any stealth at all. Just a lot of running, screaming, tunnel digging, guard sapping.

I wouldn't recommend the game for its single player. Playing with three other friends, utilizing the various abilities of the characters, and aiming to grab every coin in the level is where the game really shines.

My friends and I went for the full stealth route in nearly every single mission. If we were detected we would run and hide and wait for things to cool down before proceeding, instead of making a mad dash for the coins/exit.

The game was a lot more fun that way.

This sale did seem a bit weaker than previous years, but I missed out on a lot of the best deals on account of already owning them all. So I guess I lose...or win...I don't know.

I still bought a lot of stuff though. A lot of indie stuff and DLC. And a fair amount of gifting. I'm a little afraid of compiling a singular list here. It's so much less psychological damage when I just deal with it in small purchases here and there.

Also, a friend of mine completed the full badge. Wich is 5 tiers, which is complete bullshit to my liking to collect 50 cards for a steam badge. So i'm just taking what comes my way and whatever.

Yeah...I managed this. Between my own purchases, not missing a single vote, and trading, I got well over 60 cards, including a few foils, which I've sold all of. Got two rare emoticons too, which sold for a few bucks.

CIV 4; BTS (Which sadly, still won't work)

It might work if you get Warlords? Which is a dollar and a bit right now. Message me on Steam and I'll even buy it for you (since I feel like I may have been party to handing out free Civ 4 copies, I feel slightly responsible). Game is less than the last foil I sold.

I like how Rogue Legacy jumped into the first page on the last day. People really waited until the last minute for the discount that never came.

For the first time in a few years, I don't think I bought anything during the Steam sale. There were a few games that I thought were interesting, but looking at the amount of games I already have in my library that I have yet to play/lose interest in playing very quickly, I've ended up being a lot more miserly when it comes to these sales.

Though I did get Rogue Legacy before the sale started because I didn't want to wait for it to only go a couple dollars cheaper.

Also Total War 2: Shogun is on Flash Sale for another 4 hours. I remember someone wanting to pick that up, not sure if they had yet to do so.

EDIT: Damnit, okay I did buy Orcs Must Die 2 during Steam sale so meh I did end up joining everyone in the spending spree, if only a little bit.

I got a game gifted to me. I guess that counts.

In any case, games being under 10 and even 5 dollars is pretty terrific, all my cynicism about Steam sales aside.

Enjoy your bounties and plunder!
