Um... yeah. So apperentally this is going to be a thing. Does anyone really see any reason for this thing to exist when a 2D DS has been around in some way since late 2004?
And hardware-wise... it's just a 3DS without the 3D and can't fold onto itself.

It's an alternative for parents of smaller children who are concerned about paying $170 for something their children can break easier, and the price difference is EXACTLY the cost of the new Pokemon game coming out the same day.
Nintendo is hedging their bets to ensure they sell as many copies of the game and systems as possible. It's pretty smart.

It's both pretty smart and ridiculously dumb.
So that's better than usual with Nintendo re-re-releases of consoles.

The 3D has (for me) never been the most important part of the 3DS. Rather, the increased power and graphical capabilities are, which the 2DS has.
The lack of fold-up or easy sleep mode are dealbreakers, though.

another potential deal breaker is if there isn't an XL version
The lack of fold-up isn't much of a dealbreaker to me as long as I get one with a protective case/bag. WHY they chose to omit it is a complete mistery though.
Now, the lack of a XL is a problem. I might get this for my birthday instead of x-mas.

The fact that it doesn't fold and it's actually bigger than the 3DS makes me cringe for all those scratched screens...

The hinge is the weak point of DS', if they break, 98% of the time it's a hinge problem, often from being dropped. So for a model aimed at little kids less likely to take the best care of their stuff, this makes sense, it's basically gonna be as durable as the old gameboys. Which were goddamn tanks.
It's smart and at the lowe price point combiend with Pokemon it will make them ungodly money.

So... the "DS" stood for dual screen... only this one won't have one.

So very strange indeed.
At this point, I'm waiting for Nintendo to announce a Pokemon X/Y 2DS bundle.

Didn't "DS" originally stand for "Developer System"?
