View Full Version : STEAM SALE BEGINS. WALLETS SCREAM IN TERROR.

Yup, it's that time of year again. Today's the first day of the annual Summer Sale on Steam, a time where everybody claims they don't need/want any new games and then magically finds themselves UNABLE TO SURVIVE WITHOUT (insert name of random game here) AND IT'S 75% OFF.
Today's offerings include XCOM:Enemy Unknown, Don't Starve, Witcher 2, FarCry 3, Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion, Democracy 3, Divinity: Original Sin, and DAYZ.
This year's sale also involves teams. Click the SUMMER ADVENTURE banner halfway down the page and get assigned to a team. Teams gain points by crafting badges and buying stuff (Valve: drowning out the screams of your wallet by making the "Give Us Money Game."), and the team with the most points at the end of each day wins. And by "wins" I mean "you get trading cards if you helped." Yay? I guess?
Anyway, I'm Blue Team. How about you guys?
I still have games from the Winter sale I haven't installed yet. Ugh. I've become one of those gamers.

Beautiful.
I'm waiting on Transistor, Kentucky Route Zero, Broken Age and Shadowrun: Dragonfall to hit Daily or Flash Sale.

I think it's interesting you pick sets of games to go on the community choice sale now, instead of just having to pick one.
http://steamdb.info/sales/ a list of all games currently discounted. Remember anything 75% or more is probably safe to get now, anything less wait for a flash sale or the last day!
I myself am waiting for Magical Diary and Long Live The Queen.
...And, erm, y'know. Something masculine.

Team Red. Which is why it's in last place by a wide margin. Of course. Of course.
DR3's doing the same as Metal Gear Rising in the winter sale, but I'm not leaping on that one both because it's more expensive and Capcom said "it's best at 30fps, you can uncap it but it'll make things screwy" which makes my eyebrow impersonate Spock and want to wait for reviews.
DAYZ at -15% is taking the piss.

So, how am I supposed to do this? Just keep F5-ing Babybahamut's link and scrolling until my eyes go numb, or is there a smarter way?
The only sales that change are the daily sales, and the flash/community sales which each last 8 hours. Checking in once every 8 hours is enough to catch everything.
Games that are currently discounted but not on the front page under either of those headings (which the link I posted will show) can still go for a bigger discount later if they are part of a flash sale, which is why people suggest waiting until the last day to buy any deals. Buying a game at 10% discount, only for it to be in the next bunch of flash sales at 75% discount, will leave you sore.

I find the "team idea" morally dubious. It taps into that gambling compulsion but works so you increase your odds of winning by putting down more money, but with no real pay-off.
But the sale itself. lots of tempting things, but until I can secure employment I'm resisting even dirt cheap two dollar stuff like Hotline Miami.

Dude, steam has been leaning heavily on tapping into that "Cow clicker" mentality with its sales ever since they added trading cards for badges in their system... that's the main reason why i never bother with ANY thing steam claims to give me... just today a friend came to me and said "can i take all your cards in exchange for all my wallpapers i have repeats of?" and i just said "sure". She took 75 cards, i took 11 wallpapers... i had cards from the Holiday sale from LAST YEAR and i didn't even care.
Gotta stay away from the steam crack man...
On the other hand, i was going to get Ultra Street Fighter 4 anyway... so i decided to clean up the scrap barrel of cheap games i could care about and that i know can't get cheaper than this...
So, thus far...
Ultra Street Fighter 4
pacman Championship Bundle
Onimusha 3
Urban Trials Freestyle
Marlon Briggs
Aces Wild
If the sale ended up right now, i would be satisfied. $25 bucks give or take... but just USF4 is more than half of that.

Dont get me wrong, this isn't a chemical addiction. These kinds of things become a problem because people let them so its not something I feel should be like illegal, but Valve is intentionally trying to make it worse. Just bugs me when people say how altruistic Valve is.
Valve is basically like a drug dealer offering you up free samples of the new types of crack. You can argue its your own fault for taking it, but Valve certainly isn't doing this out of the kindness of its heart. Valve is doing it so you'll feel like YOU are the one getting the better end of the deal while Valve bleeds abit more out of you. "Yes customer, I will always treat you well. I have only your best interests in mind"

No you do get points, or to be more exact its the easiest way farm materials for badges, and doing that gets you points. So it very much is "pay to win", worse if the materials are randomized like I think they are cause that adds the gambling compulsion to it all

The whole point of these sales is to offer games at retardedly-low prices. Whose wallets are actually in danger?
But I suppose there are still those of you who for whatever reason use these sales as an excuse to buy scores of games that you'll never really play.

If it was really to provide cheap games there wouldn't be things like the team battle or flash sales. Both of which pressure consumers into making purchases that they'd otherwise hold off on. Its that "I cant afford to not get it now" mindset. Marketing tactics like this is one of the things that helps keep the poor, poor. I am not saying dont buy stuff, long as you are being objective about it and aware of the intent its a good way to get more for your dollar. Which I just wanted to point out. This isn't your buddy offering you a deal, this is a corporation trying to wring money out of people that would normally be too froogle to buy more games.
But hey thats capitalism for ya, never said it was perfect. Plus I did have abit of my tax return money left over so I will buy a few things. Though gonna wait to see if they go down any lower first.
Oh and can you give away parts of a bundle? There was one I was interested but I already have one of the items

The seventeen games I haven't played include some games I JUST bought (it was like 20 dollars to get almost everything on my wishlist, so why not?), things I obtained when there was no easy legal way to get a working copy, and I played then, but then bought after they got on steam (Fallout 2/Tactics), all the Mac version of CivIV that they put in my library for no good reason, and games and add ons that came as a bundle purchase to get the game I actually wanted (things like the Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod).
I own exactly one game I've had for more than a few hours that I've actually not played, and that's Star Wars Starfighter. And I'm not sure why. Edit: Oh, and Castle Crashers, I bought that for myself and someone else to play together and we just never did for whatever reason.

I highly suspect Gone Home's review scores have nothing to do with homophobia - or do you think the average gamer is exempt from this (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GirlOnGirlIsHot), most of the time? ( note I'm not saying the average gamer isn't sexist or homophobic, no, just that I feel this isn't the case here )
No, no, it probably has something to do with being a $20 game hailed as game of the year by critics and then people who bought it or got it on a bundle played it and found it to be, well, an extremely short game where you just explore an area.
Also, I bought FTL. I doubt I'll buy anything else. Maybe Knytt Underground or Valdis Story if that goes on a better sale.
The average het dude only actually finds girl on girl sex hot. They are aghast at lesbian romance because they are neither present nor wanted in such a relationship and can't jerk off to girls just being in love.
Like, this is pretty basic. This is why anime dudes convince themselves the cast of Madoka is straight or that Utena and Anthy are just Really Good Friends.
Lesbian sex they jerk off to and always tell themselves, "Well, they just haven't found the right guy," or, "She just needs a good dicking," or all sorts of other shit like that. The most sensual thing you find in Gone Home is the scene where they dyed Sam's hair.
Also, saying Gone Home is a game where you just explore an area is reductive. It's really well designed in both the way it uses the environment to help communicate the story and characterize the cast. Furthermore, it uses the level design to guide the player through the story at a certain pace and slowly lead into things. It's obvious about where the main story is going but the way it tells that story makes good use of the medium and it's important because it tells a story unlike those conventionally told in the medium. It's also good at having multiple character stories going on at once.
If you didn't like it because you couldn't bother to do research into what kind of game it was, or because you think not having Myst puzzles or dudeshoot makes a game less worthwhile, that's your problem.
Also, Dear Esther got similar praise despite being a shitty version of the same kind of game as Gone Home. Dear Esther you have a fairly linear path to follow to trigger story, and the environment plays no meaningful role in the storytelling beyond the narrator using a bunch of poorly written island metaphors, and the story itself (at least the one I encountered) is a fairly cliche Dude Blames Self For Wife's Death narrative.
So, other than the ways in which Dear Esther is mechanically inferior and more cliche, what are the differences? Female protagonist and a plot centered around queerness. If you honestly don't think homophobia and misogyny have anything to do with the mass response to Gone Home, you're lying to yourself.
Marc v4.0

I highly suspect Gone Home's review scores have nothing to do with homophobia - or do you think the average gamer is exempt from this (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GirlOnGirlIsHot), most of the time?
You would be on the wrong end of the 'highly suspect' spectrum, then.
The 'Average Gamer' isn't interested in heartfelt, real life lesbian relationships that show the validity of their feelings while covering the impact of society's views on the matter, they just like steamy made-for-het-dudes borderline pornography lesbians in their games.
Maybe you didn't pay much attention to all the uproar while it was happening, but it was so obviously bigotry-charged you would have had to remove yourself from viewing all information related to the game to miss it.
Just checked and while Gone Home has 90% thumbs down Dear Esther has 80% thumbs up. So yeah, the idea that it has a bad score is because people praised it a lot and it's "just walking around" is flat-out wrong.
Bard The 5th LW
06-24-2014, 10:41 AM
I'm not going to lie, I imagine their IS a prejudice factor at play in Gone Home's score, but I could sympathize with someone who paid $20 for a 2 hour or so game and ended up feeling kinda burned.
Why? Nobody ever claimed it was a long game, in fact many reviews acknowledge how short it is, and it would have been a worse game if it tried for length, because it would have fucked the pacing all to hell. I really don't see how length is an issue except in a consumerist culture that uses length as a poorly informed marketing tactic. Even then, if you thought it was gonna be longer that's something you told yourself. The game is hardly to blame for that.
EDIT: Like, if you genuinely cared about the length above all else about the game to the point that you think that's what decides whether it is worth $20, then why would you buy it full price. And if you did so because you assumed it would be longer despite the premise not being one that would provide length and the reviews acknowledging how short it is, then why do you feel burned by the game and not your own failure to check up on info about the game and wait for it to go on super cheap Steam sale?

I consider Portal one of the best video games ever made and I can beat it in under 2 hours.
Yeah, and I'd sure as hell pay $20 or even a little more to play through Portal if that was what'd been required.
Aerozord
06-24-2014, 11:23 AM
Portal is more an exception than a rule. Keep in mind if it didn't come paired with Half-Life and TF2 most people wouldn't have even tried it. I know it was the last game I tried in the orange box. Even then it had to be heads above the vast majority of games. Alot of people judge a game based on hours of entertainment to cost. The mind set that if a game provides less than a certain amount of game hours it doesn't "deserve" that price tag.
I've seen alot of people complain about length for other good games. Wolf Among Us has gotten flak for its length and it was far cheaper than 20 bucks an episode.
Though I dont know, haven't played that game. I have no job so no matter how amazing a game is I cant afford 20 bucks for it.
You don't have to! Nobody ever had to. It's $5 right now. Everything goes on Steam sale eventually.
Marc v4.0
06-24-2014, 11:27 AM
A lot of people use a very piss poor method of judging if a game is worth the purchase, then.
When I go looking for a proper metric to judge if an entertainment product is worth my money, I typically go with 'Will it entertain me' over 'Will it last 40 hours'.
It'd sure suck more to get stuck with a 200 hour game that was ass than a game I could finish in 2 hours and entertained me while making feel good about things.
I bought this movie on BluRay and it's only two hours long and I paid twenty bucks I feel ripped off. :(
To be fair tho, I think the hourly perspective on game value is probably influenced by capitalism a lot, specifically wages. Our work is valued on an hourly basis and so we inflict that on others, even when that hourly basis isn't a fair judge of value. Hours worked = Money made unless you're salaried, so I guess that'd be a huge influence on how you value things. It's incorrect but I sympathize with where it comes from I guess is what I'm getting at.
Anyway, if you don't think Gone Home is worth $20 it only costs $5 and if you don't think it's worth that then I guess you can spend $15 on manshoots or swordgames or Mario.
EDIT: I'll lay my cards on the table and confess another reason I don't like the length argument is that I don't think anyone who actually enjoys the kind of game Gone Home is really cares about it not being longer. So far as I've seen, the only people who criticized Gone Home for its length are people who wouldn't have liked it regardless. If you've seen examples of folks being all, "I liked it the story and game design a lot, but it was too short so I feel kinda ripped off," then I guess I'm wrong. Just speaking from my own experiences.

With that out of the way...
If you want to compare it to Dear Esther:
They're both short, but Gone Home is twice the price of Dear Esther. The difference denotes a difference in quality of content or quality AND quantity of content. Adding pointless, unentertaining content is padding to get the crowd that believes that more content always means it's better. Perceived quality - such as in story - is subjective, though.
Dear Esther received some acclaim from critics for being an artsy, exploration-based game that attempts to tell a cliché story of guy who blames self for wife's death. But see, it tried to do something different from the norm - a game where you just walk around and get told a story.
Gone Home received almost universal acclaim from critics. It, too, is an artsy, exploration-based game that tells a story focused on a lesbian relationship that is taken seriously is, which is far, far from the norm in video games. So not only does it do the bold move of telling such a story like it does, it also is a game about exploration.
So why has Gone Home received terrible user reviews? Maybe the story didn't resonate with them. Maybe it's sexism. Maybe the game received an incredible amount of praise from critics because it portrays a lesbian relationship seriously, itself a step towards better representation, that the average consumer doesn't care about or doesn't think the same in another form of media would receive the same amount of praise. Maybe it's homophobia. Maybe it's some backlash about the discussion of social issues being so prominent in media to a point where even people who are okay with everything are getting tired of getting told they're not okay with everything enough.

Any stand-out good things to grab? Shadowrun maybe? Shadowrun Returns is fun. It is very well written, has an interesting world, and some good combat mechanics. The only downside is that its provided campaign, Dead Man's Switch, plays like a giant tutorial. You'll learn how to deck, and then if you're not a decker you'll never have to deck again. You'll be introduced to characters and you'll want to learn more about them, but they'll hang out with you for maybe two missions and then peace out so you can meet ANOTHER character. It was a little difficult to care about the characters once you realize that most of them will leave as soon as you do what they want you to do. There are a few exceptions, of course, but generally everyone was written well enough to make you want to know more about them and their motivations, but there's only one or two you'll ever actually get to know better. I actually ended up getting more attached to the random NPC shadowrunners you can hire as part of your team than I did several of my storyline companions, because they had more screen time.
Dragonfall, Shadowrun's DLC, is better in almost every conceivable way. You have a set group of characters who stays with you, so you can watch them develop over the course of the story. You can still hire from a pool of NPC shadowrunners if you want to switch up your team, but your in-house crew is well rounded enough to rely on alone. All of your characters are well written (except maybe Glory? I dunno. I liked her at first but she got a bit Mary Sue after a while) and the game as a whole seems to have tons more intrigue, moral choices, and depth. Overall, Dragonfall is less of a DLC and more a stand-alone game, and so far I love it.
So yeah. Pick up Shadowrun Returns if you like turn based strategy games with a fantasy-cyberpunk edge. Play through it, and grab Dragonfall when it goes on sale again.
OK. So. Kentucky Route Zero: What's your guys' opinion on that? It NEVER goes on sale more than 30%, so today's 50% flash sale is tempting. Is the game worth $12?
Definitely. Kentucky Route Zero's soundtrack is awesome and it's really good at doing subtle and surreal at the same time. It creates a definite air of mystery and I still don't know where it's going.

So why has Gone Home received terrible user reviews? ...the average consumer...
Worth noting that user reviews do not reflect the average consumer and can never be assumed to do so when places like 4chan and Reddit organize around skewing these things one way or another and people get harassed and abused for speaking up about it.
Maybe it's some backlash about the discussion of social issues being so prominent in media to a point where even people who are okay with everything are getting tired of getting told they're not okay with everything enough.
Anyone seriously engaged in such backlash has their head up their ass. If they want the talk of social issues in games to go away, they'll have to wait until games stop being gross and terrible about gender, race, and sexuality.
EDIT: Also worth noting that the reason Dear Esther is cheaper is because its a graphical update to the original Source Engine mod that is the game.

Also about Shadowrun Returns: There's a campaign in the workshop called Shadowrun Unlimited that aims to deliver the world of shadowrun instead of a story. It's pretty crazy.
( Also while playing this I found out that it's not shadowrun that I dislike, it's that our GM was a hack )

The real thing we should remember is metacritic is a horrible metric for determining quality.
I got pretty bored of Dead Man's Switch, I'll check this campaign later. Also yay for a great day, I'm getting Shadow Warrior and Blacklist and reccomend Darksiders as always for being a damn good grimdark Zelda(Try the second at your own risk, some people like it better, other worse, but don't expect any conclusion on the story).
I doubt there's someone here who hasn't tried New Vegas but IMO it and Alpha Protocol are the best PC RPGs to come out in the last few years.
I own the first Metro and although it didn't click on me I gotta admit it's a very polished FPS
The Blackwell games are fun short point'n'clicks, nothing special but good for scratching that retro pointing itch
And although one day I wrote a pretty scathing review about Brothers, Imma take that back and reccomend it if you want a game that plays like it was made by Pixar or whoever is your favorite animation company.
oh and there's also call of duty I guess

So the only game I've bought so far was Gone Home, which had been on my wishlist for ages. (Only wish I'd held out for the better sale price--not because it's not worth the $2 difference, just that I have to be careful with my money right now.) Just spent a little less than four hours going through it (so take that, "two hours of gameplay"?) and now I feel emotionally drained and possibly in need of a cry. Kim was comparing it to Dear Esther, which I did love, but I agree that there's really no comparison when it comes to story. Gone Home was incredible. The only place I think Esther has one up is the music; that game has a gorgeous soundtrack. But I'm not sure a soundtrack would have improved Gone Home.
Anyway, that's my unsolicited two cents. Gonna go lie in the dark and listen to sad music now...

To be honest I dont mind what Valve is doing. I'm a capitalist, long as the consumer is informed and competition (as in between businesses) is maintained and laws observed I'm ok with it. I'm just going, well duh its just a technique to encourage competitive buying because American consumer loves a competition even when they don't directly benefit. So of course Valve is going to try and make this as cut-throat as possible to encourage people to buy more to win.

Considering the way in which the prizes are to be distributed in this particular competition, collusion makes perfect sense here. Especially considering how shitty the prize is and how quickly 'investing' any effort into winning legitimately fails to pay off (i.e. after spending almost any money at all).
I mean, thirty people who get anything as a reward for spending the most money. Out of thousands of 'winning' participants. You either collude with the enemy or write off winning the prize at all.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean, but the team is selected by the most points, and then the individuals who get games are selected by random amongst the team members that helped to win that day.
The only reason to collude was if you genuinely believed you had a real shot at winning for some reason, which, lets be honest, barely anyone does. It was just a dumb little raffle for people who were going to be buying games anyway to make a badge for their profile and have a chance to win something. People took it too seriously (Which, admitedly also cuts the profits Valve can make from it) so they changed it up in a way that let more people actually get something.

I too was very bored by the original Torchlight, mainly because the entire game took place in one dungeon. Torchlight II is better in almost every way. I enjoy it a lot; I bought it for my sister so we could play multiplayer (although that doesn't work well so far), but I can see how some people might be bored by Torchlight II as well.
Personally, I like it and think it's definitely worth the $4.99. It's not, however, a game with a deep and gripping storyline or super impressive graphics: There IS a storyline and some of the enemy designs are really cool, but the game's focus is on slaying hordes of monsters, building up fame (by slaying special "rare" monsters) and collecting loot.
You also have a pet in Torchlight II, who becomes your personal packmule, assist character and loot gopher. Your pet (which can be anything from a wolf to a llama to a falcon) has its own inventory to pick up loot you can't hold, and you can send him into town to sell your unwanted loot and buy items from merchants so you don't have to stop killing goblins to get more health potions. That element is really nicely implemented.
So if you're looking for a nice little hack-n-slash, give it a try. Supposedly there's multiplayer, my sister and I tried it today but kept disconnecting or getting so out of sync that we were teleporting all across each others' screens and monsters were falling over dead for no apparent reason. But that might just be due to our terrible internet.

It's not windows only. Linux and Mac versions were stretch goals. Also WiiU and 3DS

I dunno what's the final retail price will be, but the Kickstarter price for the WiiU or 3Ds versions was $15. i payed $10 and got a DRM version + steam version. So, between $15 and $20.
As for not waiting a full year, well... depends on personal taste really. This is one indie title that after playing i felt that it deserved every single penny. If I'm reading Steam correctly, the Gold Edition of Assassin's Creed 4 on Steam doesn't come with Freedom Cry, the one DLC that's genuinely worth the price of admission.
So, honestly, I'd just buy the Standard Edition, then spend $5 extra (while it's on sale) for Freedom Cry, and forget about the rest.
As for what's actually included in the Gold Edition...
...The Aveline DLC is honestly advertised. It's about an hour -- a little more or a little less depending on how you play -- of extra content. It doesn't add much to the AC4 story, as it takes place long after Kenway's Pirate Adventures. It doesn't add much to Aveline's story, either, so even if you're a huge fan of the character, you can probably skip it. There's a unique narrative approach but that's about it. It was basically created because Sony gave Ubisoft some extra incentives for some Timed Exclusive Content for the PS3 and PS4, and at the time it was created, promoting Aveline also meant promoting the Vita.
The rest are all extra islands (locations on the map) that are 'unlocked' that are completely ancillary to the main story and just give Edward some new outfits and a few new weapons to play around with. The good news is that the new weapons aren't game-breaking per se like so many overpowered items in DLC. I mean, you'll be overpowered if you complete all that DLC content the moment you technically have access to do so, but the game essentially discourages this through clever game design, as the Jackdaw isn't powerful enough early on to survive many trips south unless you spend countless hours grinding for upgrade materials. (And it makes no sense to grind early when you'll get far greater returns with minimal effort later on.)
...The bad news, though, is that the content is still completely optional, adds nothing of value to the story, and is ahistorical, meaning you'll just see Edward dress as other famous pirates and privateers (even ones who came 'after' him in the timeline.) I suppose the excuse is akin to the Animus glitching out and giving the player 'going back' to be Kenway content the real Kenway never could've accessed.
And, none of the weapons are better than the weapons you'll acquire by the end of the canon game.

If I'm reading Steam correctly, the Gold Edition of Assassin's Creed 4 on Steam doesn't come with Freedom Cry, the one DLC that's genuinely worth the price of admission.
Is Freedom Cry not what it's referencing with: Gives you all-in-one access to a new 3+ hour single-player story featuring Adewale, an ex-slave turned Assassin
I just wanna say since I feel like in retrospect I should've addressed more of this but it seems like Freedom Cry was the big sticking point for you so I want to understand that first and foremost. But, in addition to the freedom cry stuff: Are the islands actually fun? I really enjoyed stuff like the dungeon crawling for armor in 2 and Brotherhood. Is it the same sort of stuff?
Solid Snake
06-26-2014, 05:24 PM
Ramary's right. I did a quick scan through the additional Gold content and didn't see Freedom Cry listed there, because instead it's buried under the 'Season Pass' header. I'm not sure why they did that. It's not the most visible way for Ubisoft to advertise the best part of the Gold package.
Still, you're absolutely better off saving the $5. This isn't as well executed as what you're remembering from the Ezio Trilogy. The islands are all generally very bland compared with existing locations in the main game. There's a real lack of well-thought out stealth options and opportunities, and there's absolutely nothing to do, see or collect in these islands aside from the new costumes and weapons. If you spend more than ten minutes at any of these locations, you're doin' it wrong. I purchased Black Island and Hidden Mystery as separate content and was not impressed.
Freedom Cry is the one piece of AC4 DLC that's actually well-made story-driven content that will add value. It's even standalone, you'll basically play it after you finish AC4.

Good day to grab Civ V Complete if you've been holding out. Whole lot of strategy goodness for $16!

I am highly tempted to get Borderlands 2, but I already got too many games this sale.
If only like 90% of that DLC was cut and then it'd just be a couple bucks pricier than the standard edition...

How do you do this crafting thing anyways? I'm on team red so might as well do it if I get all the cards
Get one of each card of the cheapest collection in the market, go to the badge page and hit the craft button next to the game. 1 point contribution is enough to get in the raffle.

wow, I'm level 6 so I get no cards for voting. So since I dont plan on spending 100 dollars on games, I only have the one card. Actually doing the math it kind of shows just how much valve is making off this idea.
its number 7 anyone want it?

I'm waiting for Stanley Parable and Mount & Blade Warband. Also, possibly Deadly Premonitions DC, if it enjoys an even greater discount. It's hard to get too excited about DP when I've already seen so many Let's Plays of it, though. Might have been one of the few great games I managed to spoil for myself.
Oh! And Kentucky Route Zero. Definitely Kentucky Route, it just needs to be cheaper than $18 to entice me.
kinda want blood dragon but not enough to actually get it. here's hoping for deals im more interested in soon.

Get help from friends to get 2 full sets of cards, craft those 2 badges; that should get you to level 8, then you'll get all the summer card drops you've earned through voting.
EDIT: Something that worked for a friend was, get enough cards for a full set (even if there are duplicates), using this (http://www.steamtradematcher.com) to trade the dupes and, craft the badges.
Also, if you don't care about dem cards, I'll gladly take yours, because I
gotta craft all the things for REASONS.

It doesn't need to be a Summer Sale badge, a badge of any game will score you 1 point, which is enough to get in the pool.

Transistor finally hit the daily sales YAAAAY!!!! 25% ain't great but for a new game it's not bad. Plus it's only $14.99, and from what I hear that's more than fair for the game.

Wait, hold on, didn't transistor go on a 25% off flash sale AND a 25% off community vote already?

Welp, look like the sales are winding down. Only the last batch of games featured, which happen to be games they shown already in the past two weeks. Nothing notably new.
Well, I got a shit-ton of games to work with. =3
Apparently Hate Plus is only like 1.13 right now and it's amazing go buy it.

I bought way more than I thought I would this sale. Total damage:
Bulletstorm
XCOM: The Bureau
Marlow Briggs
Shadowrun: Daggerfall
PayDay 2: Big Bank Heist DLC
PayDay 2: Sniper pack DLC
Space Hulk
Splintercell Blacklist (I owed a friend for buying the Divinity Original Sin two pack, so I gave him the free copy of WatchDogs that came with my graphics card, so he gifted me this to make us even)
Nether
Wolfenstein: The New Order
Cloudbuilt
Killer is Dead (gifted to me by RO for buying him AssCreed Pirates)
And hardly any time to play any of them :(
Relatively unscathed. Long Live The Queen was a planned purchase and The Blackwell Saga (four games out of the 5 in the series) was unplanned, but I got five games total and spent less than £3 so I'm happy. I also got Ticket To Ride from a gift.
Ikaruga (http://store.steampowered.com/app/253750) sadly never got it's flash sale, but it's still at 50% discount and I'll try once more to sell it.

Aarrrgghhh, the only days where I missed the community choice sales were the days when Broken Age was on sale. Welp, guess I'll have to buy it at 33% off. HOW SAD. XD
My total so far:
Shadowrun: Dragonfall
Kentucky Route Zero
Transistor
Broken Age
Torchlight II (As a gift for a friend)
Quantum Conundrum
The Wolf Among Us
Orion: Dino Horde (received as a gift)
All in all, I spent a little more than I meant to, but not by a huge amount.
This was a pretty lackluster sale, but I guess the real treasure were the games that were randomly at 75%-90% instead of featured in a daily. Also the ones that lost in community choice because you all suck at voting.
Total Damage:
-Bought:
•Master Reboot
•Mars: Wars Log
•Gone Home
•Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae
•Bunny Must Die
•Double Dragon Neon
•Consortium
•Stick it to the Man
•Splinter Cell: Blacklist
•Shadow Warrior
-Was Gifted:
•Wolf Among Us
-Gifted:
•System Shock 2
•EYE
•Metro Last Light Complete
•Marlow Briggs
@Mauve, it's almost finished and the Fables universe is pretty interesthing in the hands of a competent writer team so I'd reccomend it, I would have bought it even if I was not gifted it before.
Reccomendations for this last day:
•Tomb Raider
•Dishonored
•State of Decay
•New Vegas
•Witcher series(If you're unfazed everyone being a complete asshole)
•Dark Souls
•Batman Arkham(Even Origins isn't that bad, it's just more of the same)
•Saints Row 3/4

Welp.
For myself:
Shadowrun Returns + Dragonfall
Max Payne 3
Wolfenstein TNO
AssFlag (Gift from Arcanum in exchange for Killer is Dead)
Shovel Knight
Steamworld Dig
Rayman Lemons
Kairo (Gift from Bard)
Battleblock Theater
Arkham Oranges + That Mr Freeze DLC
Marlow Briggs (Gift from Ryong)
But there's more! Gifts!
Killer is Dead - Arcanum (For the aforementioned AssFlag)
Dishonored Goatee - Synk
REVENGEANCE - Bard
Don't Starve - Someone I know IRL.
XCOM EU - Oster
Blood Dragon - Akasm
Witcher 2 - Geminex, although I don't think he comes here anymore.
This is why I shouldn't have a paying job.

Final verdict:
-Gone Home
-Goat Simulator
-Stanley Parable
Plus one gift purchase.
Also, I found that it actually kinda pays to use the market for the trading cards (at least during an event). I was able to buy the cards I was missing in order to craft the badge, sell all my extra cards (which mostly came from voting) and unwanted goodies, and actually come out ahead with a few dollars' credit in my Steam Wallet.

I think you're thinking of Dead Island: Epidemic (or whatever it is called that abbreviates to DIE). The moba thing that everyone got 14 keys for.
Riptide is the expansion to Dead Island that adds another character and plot and stuff.

Ah yes, my mistake. Shows how little I care for the franchise, though. Nice trailers, nothing more.
Did you know they announced another Dead Island game this week? Stop trying to milk the cash cow Deep Silver, you're going to pull the udders off.
