The entire article is just comedy gold, but this is the highlight for me:

"This is to avoid possible conflicts (e.g. a female player eliminating a male player during RO8) among other things."

I want this on a shirt.

(The article actually kind of quotes that out of context; they want to join the Real Sports club, which demands that everything be segregated by gender no matter how pointless it is)

Edit: Oh, okay, I guess they actually got rid of the gender segregation due to the enormous backlash they faced. Can someone change the date on this thread to like, two weeks ago so I can pretend I was part of that?

I remember reading this same article, involving Finland and all I saw it spread around. I'm pretty sure I don't have to explicitly state what I think about this, should be pretty obvious.

I absolutely could swear we actually had a thread about it.

It made sense to have that specific tournament be male-only as it was led directly to a bigger tournament that was male-only. Consistency and all that.

But now? Now the previously male-only tournaments are mixed and the female-only tournaments still exist. So everything is fine and women still have a way of playing in, well, a less hostile environment.

But, how does that make any sense?

Like, sure, maybe its "the other tournament's fault" that they excluded women, but really that just means BOTH tournaments are crappy. This one didn't need to feed into the other one, nor did it need to exclude women if it wanted to feed into the other one, it could have just not fed the women winners in.

Or, and this is the best option, they could have NOT been a feeder tournament for the bigger sexister one.

If a tournament says it's a qualifier for a bigger tournament, it has to abide to the rules of the bigger tournament.

Maybe they didn't have money to make a big tournament and got help from the people behind the world tournament. That's most likely what happened, even.

While their approach was "our hands are tied" maybe that WAS the best approach as it worked.

Or do you think excluding Finland from the world tournament and Finland having its own smaller but mixed tournament would have worked as well as it did in the end?

they can both be horrible

They can.

But now they both have a mixed league and a female-only league.

If they're horrible, they still gave in to public opinion.

I'm not going to judge them for being bad in the past, I'm going to judge them for accepting change. Yes, the change could've happened before, yes the change could even not be necessary, but now it's here, better late than never.

i agree. but one point i never managed to understand is the actual mechanic behind a female-only league for Videogames...

I mean, in a Physical context i can understand... physical attributes can be different, fair play is better achieve if you separate the groups (even though you can still have mixed events in certain areas work just fine) but in video game championships?!

Unless there is some obvious detail i'm missing, Mixed tournaments should be the only category around...

Female only leagues are so ladies can have a fun time competing in a tournament environment that is objectively less of a chauvinist cesspool.

Yeah, like women who compete in e-sports stuff do have to put up with a LOT of gross shit. Women sometimes need safe spaces where men aren't welcome.

i get it, but i would prefer to see that as a temporary necessity with larger efforts being done to close the gap over time...

Well, I mean, the problem is men being shitty and making mainstream communities unsafe for women. And most of the people in charge of setting rules and such for these communities are men. So, the men in charge need to get about setting rules that actually exclude and punish the men in these communities who are being shitty. Some folks are making half-assed steps toward that, but not enough.

Masculinity is such a fragile, easily broken little thing.

At least that's the impression I always get of it from dudes who get HELLA overprotective of their precious "manness" or whatever.
