What Are You Playing thread 2: The Revenge

I finally got my new PC sort-of-up-and-running and am at long last able to start downloading games I've had since Christmas. Here's what I've been playing over the past few months: What about you guys?

-Shadowrun Returns: Bought this as a gift for a Secret Santa exchange, but they had already bought it for themselves by the time gift giving came around. Decided to keep it and give it a try on a whim as I knew nothing about the franchise but was in the market for a game I could run on my macbook. Best idea ever. It is SO GOOD. The DLC, Dragonfall, is even better, as it delves more into character interaction and tricky moral choices (well, "tricky" in the regard that the outcomes aren't always what you expect them to be, and the effects can potentially be far-reaching). Part of me wants to play through it again to see what happens if I made different choices (like NOT allowing a homicidal supercomputer free reign to my character's hometown in exchange for unlocking a few security doors for me.... >.>) but I like my original character too much to start all over again with something new. Having finished all missions, I think I'll poke around the workshop for some user-made campaigns.

-Transistor: I LOVE THIS GAME. It borrows quite a few elements from Supergiant's former project, Bastion, but that's not a bad thing. The world and characters, from what I've seen thus far, are all new and not related to Bastion, but the storytelling style, the silent protagonist, the gentle-voiced narrator (different from Bastion's narrator, although the voice actor is in the game)and the atmosphere of a strangely empty and dying world are all present. The combat system is all new, working in a real-time/turn-based hybrid system where combat is paused to plan and execute attacks whenever the player wants. Attacks can be combined for different effects, and depending on how your attack programs are "installed" into the Transistor (your sword), can work in active or passive capacities. I've played about 5 hours total so far, and I'm told it's a bit short so I might be getting towards the end. But the storytelling is so compelling I'd gladly play it again right away. The only problem is that I like the voice inside the Transistor so much that I'm sure they're setting him up to die. He's already declared his love for the main character, which feels like the equivalent of a side character saying he's got two days before retirement, just before a giant monster attack.

-Kentucky Route Zero: VERY beautiful art. VERY bizarre story. But in a good way! The plot travels quickly between haunting, emotional self reflection and sheer WTF in act II, yet it works. Just when you think you understand what's going on, just when things are feeling normal, BAM. Giant eagle carrying houses around because otherwise "the people can't sleep". OK! Sure! I look forward to the final chapter.

-Broken Age: Fun characters, great voice acting, good writing. You can definitely feel the Grim Fandango/Monkey Island vibes on this one, and every character is likeable. Act I ends in a cliffhanger, so I hope Act II shows up soon. This one's only about 4 hours total for act I.

Also: Torchlight II (playing it rarely, still love it but still haven't finished it yet), Borderlands 2 (replaying with my sister for the billionth time cuz it's great), Minecraft (rarely. I get in phases of really liking Minecraft and then really being bored by it. I'm in a bored phase right now.)

Things to play next: Now that i have a PC with a working video card, I can finally install/ play Dishonored, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and Quantum Conundrum. On my Macbook, I have The Wolf Among Us in line next.

What've you folks been playing?

Been playing mostly Vita lately so...

Ragnarok Odyssey: Ace: I originally bought a Vita to play Ragnarok Odyssey but then this was announced so I waited for it to come out and go on sale. It was well worth it. It just annoys me that the Magician and Blacksmith classes are significantly worse when compared to the other four and one of those four, the Hunter, is extremely powerful if played perfectly...Which ends up being just a little bit stronger than the Swordsman. Still, fun game, doesn't feel grindy - given that I completed the non-Ace content in 30 hours - even though that's how progression is in the game.

Atelier Totori+: I really wish this game was better. You get requests to make items or kill enemies and you can explore the world and gather things. Walking out of the city, combat, gathering and crafting all take days and you have three years for the plot to actually go anywhere. Most common thing is running around for a month killing things and gathering what you need for some requests then go back in town, get through ten cutscenes of cute girls being cute, a knight guy being absurdly badass, a kid looking up to him and everyone talking about how great your teacher is, then you make items, deliver them and go do everything again. It feels like there isn't a lot to do and it doesn't really matter much to your progression - you need to be diamond rank ( easily achievable ) by the end of three years and then you get told you have to collect some items to make a boat. Combat is very simple, item crafting is not simple but also far from complicated ( I'm talking legend of mana "we took three years to figure how does this system work" levels of complexity here ) and the general progression is that you get to walk further from town and see slighty different enemies and get new materials with which you can make better items. I feel the game could be a lot better if given some direction.

Meanwhile on the PC side of things, I've been replaying Dark Souls with a friend. I'll probably start working on some games again...such as...

Knytt Underground: this one's an oddball. I'm a huge fan of Nifflas' previous work ( knytt stories, nightsky, within a deep forest ) and this one starts out with two introductory chapters and then you get to the real game: a gigantic metroidvania-esque map for you to explore. While I do say metroidvania, you don't actually upgrade any of your initial powers - you can change between a mute girl that can use flowers that are in the environment in specific areas for things ( like do a double jump or fly straight to a side ) and a living bouncy ball ( that you can control bounciness and also magnetize yourself for some puzzles ). It's somewhat akin to being a 2D collect-a-thon platformer, since you have a huge inventory and you go around picking up things and giving them to the right people. The plot and characters aren't particularly noteworthy - you have a mute girl who ends up getting tasked with ringing five gigantic bells across the world because there's a prophecy that if they aren't ringed once every thousand years the world will end and you are helped in this endeavor by two fairies: one's sassy, easily annoyed and pessimistic while the other one is optimistic and well mannered. You can choose which one to send out to talk with people, for different bits of dialogue. I wouldn't say anything of the game is particularly memorable, but the exploration is fun.

Valdis Story: I heard about this back when an alpha demo was released and really liked it, but stopped giving a crap about it when I saw a huge art style shift. Then I bought it during the steam sale. Game's actually a pretty fun metroidvania, if a bit weird on the controls sometimes. Plot and characters aren't anything special and the setting is incredibly bland - angels and demons are fighting a war on the human world, human mercenary group that's trying to protect themselves ends up on a city in a land that they thought didn't exist anymore - but eh, the combat is fun and there's a lot of variety to it...eventually.

I'd talk about Borderlands 2 which I also have to play, but I suppose everyone knows about it well enough. I'm kind of disappointed in the character choices compared to the first.

My girlfriend really enjoyed a series of games starting with The Blackwell Legacy (http://store.steampowered.com/app/80330/) so I picked up the bundle (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/13237/) last steam sale and have been playing through that. Halfway through game 4 of 5, they're a really neat series, individually kinda short but they come together to make a whole.

I'd compare it best to the investigation parts of Phoenix Wright games- you are Rosa Blackwell, who much to her chagrin has inherited the family spirit guide, a 1920s gangster type who insists she resolves supernatural events by solving the murder of the ghost responsible.

The voice acting feels quite amateur (lots of hissing and pops of not-quite-studio quality equipment) and I worry that'd put people off who watch the trailers. It's honestly not that distracting in the game itself- and if it is, voices can be turned off as everything appears in text form too.

I just 100%'d Lollipop Chainsaw, it took awhile (relatively) and so to break it up a bit I went through a game called "The Cave" (which I really liked).

I got The Cave, Double Dragon Neon, and Twisted Metal Black (which I already had) in that 99cents "Flash" sale they had recently on PSN.

Now I'm playing Final Fantasy 13. I decided I wanted to get 100% of the trophies on it because I'm an idiot. But I like Lightning, and I want to play Lightning Returns one of these days, so I figure I need to start here.

Plus I like the visuals and music...mostly. Some things are a bit more anime than I can handle.

I like the combat too...Kind of. I like it when it allows me to have a party leader that I like. The whole "Instant Game Over" when your party leader dies is bullshit, especially when they force you to be a wimp like Hope.

Which is sorta ironic...The game is all "dumbed down", but that makes it harder than it needs to be in spots.

Mostly Octodad, looking for ties. Something about crawling into places I shouldn't be is compelling. I need to get around to playing Gone Home (thanks, Mern), but I've been disturbingly busy lately.

I was watching an LP of Gone Home while I was wrapping up my Lollipop Chainsaw business. Seems interesting.

Not sure why it got so much hate by nerds for "not being a game" except for the fact nerds hate on everything Because Reasons.

Killer Is Dead: The game is a pretty solid character action game. Wonderful art style, tight controls, and even though you're only mashing a single button to attack, your moves get progressively flashier (and more damaging) as you build up your combo counter which makes it enjoyable to watch, while also incentivizing you to avoid getting hit and losing your combo (other than losing health). Plus there's just-guards, which are kind of lame, and just-dodges, which slows down time and lets you unleash a flurry of attacks, which is awesome. I messed with my ini files to get the game running at 60fps (it's a shitty port on the pc and locked to 30), which ended up speeding up a lot of the animations, so I think I made the game slightly harder because of that. It also crashes randomly because of the increased framerate.

The story is kind of nonsensical. Something to do with the moon, people living on it, Liam O'Brien, evil things called Wires, you killing them, and saying "The Killer is Dead." You also fight a guy who has a tiger tattoo that is actually some sort of spirit/demon tiger, that leaps out of the tattoo and fights you too, and it's implied your boss had something similar but with a Dragon, except he doesn't have the dragon anymore because that side of his body that had the tattoo is now cyborg stuff.

Unfortunately the game is marred by their choice to include optional "Gigolo" side missions, where you ogle ladies, give them gifts, and use magical x-ray glasses to see them in their underwear in order to have implied sex and receive a sub-weapon. And none of the sub-weapons are even necessary as far as I can tell. One of them lets you get access to secret areas that give you bonus cash to unlock skills, but the others are just for utility in combat.

Warframe: New update hit that gives players their own ships, and overhauled the UI making them Dead Space-esque (i.e. they are all in game and your character interacts with them), and you can get your own space dog now. I always find myself coming back to play this game because I enjoy the combat, the fluidity of motion, and building and collecting new weapons and warframes. Unfortunately I never stay for long as I'm always reminded the higher level enemies are just HP sponges.

Rayman: Legends: Been playing this on the WiiU. It took a few levels for the game to grow on me, but it really has grown on me. The platforming seemed a bit simplistic at first, but I quickly learned there were more complex mechanics to discover. The first two worlds were pretty darn fun, although the third was a bit mediocre and definitely lacking the polish of the first two. The fourth had some "stealth" (avoid these patrolling lights that will make a laser zap you) segments that felt extremely forced and hampered my enjoyment. I'm hoping the remaining worlds bring back the polish of the first two.

With those complaints out of the way, the game looks and sounds beautiful. Like, goddamn is this game pretty. It's like I'm platforming through concept art. And even though the levels look so pretty, they still make enemies and obstacles distinct enough that I'm never blaming the game for my screw ups.

Also there's daily and weekly challenge levels that are always a blast to play, especially since you can see ghosts of other players running through the challenge levels with you.

Divnity: Original Sin: Holy shit this game is amazing. Been playing it co-op with a friend, so haven't gotten very far since we can only play an hour or two a day at best thanks to work (and we haven't played in the past few days). I've heard it likened to Baldur's Gate, although I haven't played that so I can't comment on that comparison.

Questing in the game doesn't hold your hand, and unless you're checking your quest log every 10 seconds you're left to your own devices as to how to proceed or where to go next. You can easily stumble into an area where the enemies will one-shot you, and the game won't care if you piss off half the town and have to fight all the guards. Your actions come with consequences, so deal with them.

Combat is this interesting game of positioning, using your surroundings, combo-ing elemental fields and effects (such as lighting oil on fire, electrifying water, or blood, exploding poison clouds) and (unfortunately) utilizing as much crowd control skills as you can (i.e. stuns, knockdowns, charms, freezing, etc) when you get outnumbered (which is often).

And while you have the standard RPG attributes and perks and skills to level up, you also gain bonuses to various things depending on your dialogue choices. These traits are on a slider with opposite characteristics, such as Romantic and Pragmatic, and when you choose the corresponding dialogue you gain a point into one or the other, and whichever has more points provides its passive bonus. The game won't tell you which choice is which until you've made it, but it's not hard to figure out by looking at them (although not all dialogue with multiple choices will affect a trait). And it's not like you're shown all the traits and their bonuses beforehand. You will only know about a trait slider once you've gotten a point into one or the other, and you're constantly unlocking new ones. I think we have about 10 sets of 2 unlocked so far, and we're only level 8.

If you have a friend to play this game with, I highly recommend it. I can't speak for how fun it is playing solo, but co-op it's a blast. Especially since you and your friend can just split up and go do your own thing if you really want. Go explore different parts of town, take different forks in a road, the game won't care. If one of you gets into combat, it won't affect the other until he comes close enough to aggro the guys you're fighting (which you can actually use to your advantage to sneak up on enemies, or set up a combo).

This game was the number 1 selling game on Steam near the end of the Steam sale and for two or three weeks after for a reason. It's fantastic.

Some day I will understand why people do this to themselves.

I 100%'d Dragon's Crown and plan to do the same with Ragnarok Odyssey Ace in the near future. I'd also do it with Muramasa:Rebirth but ehhhhh.

It's fun, sometimes, sometimes not.

On the subject of Divinity Original Sin: every time I hear about how it deals with magic doing stuff with the environment I remember that part of the hype behind Dragon's Age:Origins was that and I wanted to get into it but then I saw how the combat actually was and never cared about Dragon Age again.

...It also reminds me of Bahamut Lagoon, the first game I know of that had magic do things with the environment.

I just WASHED AWAY THE ANGER by beating METAL GEAR RISING REVENGEANCE and it was pretty solid. There was one sore spot for me but otherwise that game was a roller coaster of fun. I'll probably try my hand at the DLC missions sometime.

I cleared through Dishonored as well which was pretty fun. I might try a high chaos run but I didn't feel like it was as cool as REVENGEANCE.

Otherwise I'm playing Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes which is fun I guess. I'm trying to get some extra hours out of it by playing the side missions. I also have realMyst: Masterpiece edition which is pretty cool. I also have Child of Light and Shovel Knight which I need to get around too in addition to replaying Borderlands 2.

I've been playing...

Sid Meier's Civilization V: ...and I can't stop. I hated this game at launch, it was an inferior turd compared to Civ IV and it's completed expansions. In 4 years, the game has changed. It's awesome. I've completed multiple playthroughs just this month, and the Marathon game length option is starting to look pretty promising. Promising, that is, at ensuring I go multiple days with little sleep because just...one...more...TURN!!! *5AM, birds chirping*

Dark Souls II: Still! I play once a week with two buddies. As far as accomplishments go, I'm finished with the game. I lost my original save files to a thoughtless hard drive wipe while configuring my new desktop. My friends and I have been going through the game as Marvel characters, and I was Lightning-build Thor. It was effective. I was kind of pissed about losing the character the day I found out my mistake, but I kind of tuck-and-rolled with the grief by explaining that Marvel decided give Thor's powers to a woman, so if my roleplay is to be at all accurate, I need to re-roll MY Thor as a woman too. And that's what I did this week.

Mario Kart 8: It's just...so...incredible... Buy a WiiU...

Coming Soon to a Steam Notification Near You: The Witcher 3 trailer made me poo myself with excitement, so I'm considering delving into the veritable treasure vault of excellent RPGs I've never experienced sitting in my backlog. Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Shadowrun Returns, Witcher 1 & 2, Alpha Protocol, and a whole bunch of others that I can't name off the top of my head. Yeah, getting into those soon. I was going to save the Witcher series for when my new monitor arrives, since it has the potential to be gorgeous. But for stuff like BG, I may just try my hand soon.

Games, games, games.

Age of Empires 3: Yeah, I know. This game is old by now and nobody plays it because everybody hated it because it wasn't AoE2. But I love the shit out of this game and I'm still playing it.

Shovel Knight: This game is really everything I ever knew I wanted in a game and several things I didn't know I wanted. I want to marry it. I want to play it again. I want to speedrun it. I'm waiting for whatever updates they're planning to release to the WiiU version. Apparently I'll be able to play as Shield Knight?

This game is so well-designed, and so polished, and the controls are tight as hell. The design and the character aesthetic is charming, the music is good, and there's a bunch of little things, both in gameplay and in the scenery, that I keep discovering. It's wonderful. 11/10.

Rise Of Nations EX: I'm glad to have gotten this game when it came out on Steam, and I wanna get good at it. It's very well polished and has one of the best user interfaces in the history of RTS games, and the gameplay itself is, of course, compelling. Unfortunately it's also super super complex and I sometimes have trouble wrapping my head around it all, which also gives me ridiculous ladder anxiety so I can't play randoms online.

So it goes. I'd love to play online with a friend at least.

Super Smash Bros Brawl: About a year or so back, my Wii stopped being able to read discs of any sort, so I couldn't play anything on it except for VC and Wiiware games. This made me sad. Now I have a WiiU so I can play it again, which is great because I really need Smash 4.

Also, I need that Gamecube Controller Adapter ASAP because holy hell the Wiimote/Nunchuck is clunky as hell as a Brawl control scheme. Where's my C-stick!?

Civilization 5: Pretty much mirroring what Azisien said. It's pretty great now. I'd like to be able to play multiplayer, but I just don't have that kind of time to burn in one sitting.

I Will Be Playing: Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101, when they arrive in a week or so. Will update then.

Also quit using Youtube because of how they handle copyright disputes. Which is to say, the corporation accusing you calls all the shots and doesn't even have to submit a proper DMCA claim. The email I got from Youtube after disputing the copyright charge actually said "Sony has reviewed your dispute and decided that their claim is still valid" (the video was private, and therefore exempt from the copyright laws of almost every country in the world). I would have thought it was a joke if I hadn't been through this before. Then Youtube forwards you to an incredibly patronizing video they commissioned from the Happy Tree Friends guys and blocks access to your account until you do a multiple choice test on it.

Some day I will understand why people do this to themselves.

Because 100%ing a game is a way to extend a game's life beyond simply "beating" it. Otherwise I'd be done with these things in a week or two, and games are waaay too expensive for that. I like feeling as though I take a game to a limit, or at least a limit contrived by the developers.

Not that I couldn't figure out a way to extend a game's life on my own, like "beating it with all the characters" or "beating it without continuing" or "beating it without equipping armor" or "finding all the weapons" etc or "turning Hardcore Mode on and beating it on Very Hard difficulty" (like I did with New Vegas)

But some things I don't consider doing, and a good trophy list can help nudge me in the right direction.

I also don't 100% every game. Some games aren't worth the time, or are full of too much grindy bullshit (like GTAV).

Or...grindy bullshit I don't feel like doing. Some games have grindy bullshit I do like doing, because the gameplay is fun. GTAV's was stupid because you got more experience online by GOLFING than you did doing anything else. Also I didn't 100% Tomb Raider Reboot because of the online grind-fest.

But yeah, you snotty 1-percenter rich kids may be able to buy all the games you want for 60$ when they come out and spend a day on them and beat them on the easiest difficulty and throw them away, but us po' folk who have to wait 4 years for a game to drop to 10$ have to do what we can! :D

EDIT: I also have to be approximately 300 trophies ahead of Snake at all times.

Dark Souls 2: For reasons I cannot explain while I was lukewarm about DS1 I am all about DS2, I understand the complaints that I've heard people relay at it since its inception. I care about none of them because down on the lowest level of my brain I like it so much more on a fun level. And I play it almost daily with my boyfriend.

Today they released the Sunken Crown DLC, I've played a half hour of it and boy is it a shit kicker. Be prepared you unfortunate souls because it looks like it's going to be a real fucking ride.

Divinity: Original Sin: Me and my boyfriend have also been playing a lot of this. Mostly fun because while he is definitely the better DS player, I got my grips on turned based combat and somewhat dense-ish questing. The game is not 100% serious with itself which lets it really allow a nice loose dialogue in all the characters, I've found myself only really put upon by a MASSIVE data dump they thrust into your mouth and hold your nose shut for after you meet an insane goblin.

I've been playing a lot more of Hex Shards of Fate lately, getting my teeth cut in the PVP world has been a lot of fun. Finally getting in that ''muscle memory'' zone for card games where i get to see my strategies ahead of my plays and getting smarter with deck building... it's actually really fun. Fun enough for me to build up a sizable collection of 3k Cards already, and i'm already waiting for season 2 to roll out new cards!

If they get what they are promissing out, this is going to be a fantastic game to play...

Another game i dropped cash in, and it's getting neglected is Warframe. But that is my fault, since i keep forgetting to fix the ports on my router that block me off from finding players to play with 90% of the time... Lv30 Loki though!

Other than that, i'm looking to get a new mouse soon to go back and play some Shooters. Still haven't played the latest Splinter Cell because of it...

Nothing. Absolutely nothing in gaming interests me right now. Well, I was going to be playing Magic 2015, but then Steam decided I don't deserve that right or something and the fucking thing won't run for me. At all. On any computer.

Stuff I've vaguely read suggests that Magic 2015 is poop, anyway. Emulated the real card game too much by going full Pay2Win.

Not that I've ever played MTG in virtual or physical form, but eh.

EDIT: Oh yes, what am I playing?

The Doters, like usual, although since Techies is arriving today or tomorrow I may put myself on an enforced break.

Ryong pestered me too much to play Marlow Briggs, so I'm doing that now. It's really low budget!

Probably will go back to playing Batman AA afterwards because hey, I want to replay it.

And I guess I'll be starting up Dark Souls 2 again too, as the first bit of DLC came out. Although since Havels got nerfed my character built around Havel fast-rolling with zero magic looks even more stupid now. Might start a new character, try out some murracles or IWIN hexes.

Finished Transistor this morning. I was wrong-- The Transistor IS the same voice actor as the narrator from Bastion-- I almost didn't recognize him without the gravelly old man voice. I went through half the game thinking he was playing Royce instead.

Anyway: Final thoughts. Very beautiful game with a satisfying ending. Loved it. It did, however, leave more questions than answers regarding the plot and the world. Also, of the five "bosses," you only ever meet four and only fight three of them. That's not a deal-breaker, though. It works well enough. GORGEOUS soundtrack too, with a few hints of Bastion in there.

...I gotta replay Bastion.

Fire Emblem Awakening...and yes I find it funny that the Avatar's name is Robin...and that he will be in the new Smash Bros.

I must ask you to name all your happy couples.... Comparing Fire Emblem Awakening couples is totally a thing.

Quite a few people have Sonic Racing Transformed on Steam, I've noticed. We should play together on a Steam night.
