So, since we lost the last thread, let's pick up again where we left off.
All fighters have access to custom moves, potential replacements for each of their B-moves. Most of them just sacrifice some power/range for new utility (or vice-versa), but a few of them have new abilities entirely. You can unlock special moves through single-player activities and Smash Run, but Palutena and the Mii Fighters have access to theirs right from the start.
Here's a list. (http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=c2xywrva) Note that this obviously contains spoilers for all the playable characters on the roster.
Note that Custom Moves, like the Mii Fighters themselves, can only be used while playing in single-player, local multiplayer, or in "With Friends" online multiplayer. While the lack of Mii Fighters is understandable since random anons probably don't want to see the dick you drew on your own face, I'm not really sure why custom moves are cut from "With Anyone" multiplayer.

Ice Climbers died because the 3DS couldn't handle them, apparently. Pessimism dictates that they'll be exclusive DLC for the New3DS. No, I will not buy it for your exclusive Xenoblade port, I'd rather buy a Wii controller and emulate it (if it even needs one).
I have preordered SSB3DS so you can all beat me with the advantages of trans-Atlantic lag and Brawl experience. It's been a good 8 years since I played Melee.

I was never very good with the Ice Climbers but it's still a real shame.
Mewtwo and Ridley were the two I was really hoping on.
On the plus side, the roster is looking great. Some really unique new move sets with the likes of Mega Man, Pac Man, Shulk Man and the Spoilers Men.

So many new characters to feed as sacrifice to Jigglypuff, and since random tripping is out they actually put up a better fight against the blood god of Smash.

This Captain Falcon video is making me far happier than it should. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UM6zwND6MNc)
Also, as alluded to in the demo, all stages now have an "Omega" variant (hit X on the pad to access) that basically turns the stage into Final Destination, as one flat platform with no stage hazards, themed after the stage itself. So if you like the stage aesthetics or music but hate stage hazards, you're in luck.

Having played the demo quite a bit so far, I am really liking the 3DS version as a portable option for fun on the go, but it's definitely got some issues primarily in the control layout that make it feel pretty bad if you actually care about winning. The circle pad is super unreliable when it comes to differentiating tilts and smashes, and not having the move you want come out even after several attempts is incredibly frustrating.
I do appreciate that you can apparently link the 3DS up to the WiiU as an additional controller option, because there are going to be a lot of people who just aren't going to be playing this on the WiiU regularly and allowing them to use the controller they've become most accustomed to is nice, but it's definitely not the controller I'd recommend if you're playing competitively.
On that note, having messed around a ton with the Omega stage variant and giving the 1v1 NO ITEMS FINAL DESTINATION tournament style a go, Smash 4 is the first time where I've really found it fun (though obviously it's not necessarily how I'd elect to play with friends) and I think I might try entering some tournaments in the future. What's really going to make or break that for me, though, is whether custom specials end up being allowable in tournament. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with it as I'm not seeing anything so far that looks completely broken and balance-wise it still helps some underperforming characters become more viable. Only major downside is whether or not TOs and players want to spend the extra time allowing competitors to set custom loadouts, especially given how much longer it takes to get a kill in this game compared to Melee.
But USF4 has selectable ultras and it chugs along just fine, so who knows?

From what I've heard, early tournaments will not be allowing custom moves since they need to be unlocked randomly, over time, and tourney organizers want to make sure people are on an even footing. However, they will likely allow custom moves once people have had enough time to get what they need.

Well, I'm probably not going to be able to make it out to anything until next year's Evo at the earliest so I'm not too worried.
But Mega Man's apparently way better with custom specials than without so I have a personal vested interest here.

That's good to hear, because I almost exclusively play Mega Man in the demo but I never use his specials (except his Up-B to recover, obviously). They're just so lackluster compared to his normal moves.

I like Metal Blade and combining the item version with Leaf Shield does allow for some minor shenanigans but they aren't that great, so I'd personally like to try Skull Barrier instead just for the projectile reflection. Crash Bomber can provide a good setup to combo off of but it also prevents you from going in while it's active since it can transfer to you on physical contact, so I'm interested in trying Ice Slasher instead for the freezing effect. I've heard good things about Danger Wrap, too, since it's safer than Crash Bomber and does more damage, but it also sounds slightly harder to hit with.
As for Down+B, all options are good in their own unique ways. Rush Coil is the fastest recovery and escape tool, Beat is the more reliable recovery tool but it's a lot slower, and Tornado Hold is an actual attack that you can deal damage and combo with to easily knock the opponent off the top of the screen, but it's the least effective for recovery.
Shadow Blade is also a really good neutral B replacement that's easier to combo with and can't be used against you like Metal Blade, but the problem there is that it's not Metal Blade so I don't know.
Loyal
09-26-2014, 12:26 AM
Danger Wrap might be helpful for aerial-heavy fighters (maybe also a counter-edgeguard?) but it's not very useful otherwise. As in MM7, it arcs VERY sharply upward and you flat out won't be hitting anyone with it on level ground if they're more than 1-2 body widths away.
POS Industries
09-26-2014, 03:06 AM
Yeah, I saw it in action and it's got some utility as well as good damage and smash properties, but it's a lot more situational. However, that might still put it above Ice Slasher and Crash Bomber, because the former's freeze effect doesn't last long at all and the latter has a number of problems of its own. At the very least, Danger Wrap gives you something you can do against aerial opponents beyond Air Shooter, and they both probably work well with each other, too.

I like Mega man because almost all his major smashes have some Ike and Snake-esque extra range to them, and obviously his charge shot goes pretty far, making it very easy to edge guard with a nice charged side a. I think his specials do need a bit more "oomph" but they are also pretty versatile and I can't wait to do some customs.
My only wish is that I could get a helmet-less Mega Man skin for him.

rpg and I smashed it out awhile ago. Tons a fun. Lag is noticable but not too difficult to compensate for. You won't be playing seriously with it, but it's still good for practicing with actual people and it's great fun when the connection is stable.
Wario is still great, great fun to play. Yoshi is scary as hell. Little Mac is either going to be very good all the way down the line, or he'll be like Ike in Brawl in that once people figure out how to counter him on a large scale he'll drop easily.

GSP doesn't have any effect on matchmaking, it's just a record of how well you rank in that particular mode (counting, roughly, the number of recorded players you are performing better than). There is in fact no matchmaking at all, and you're just as likely to run into some random dude who can't find the A button as you are to run into mew2king or Mango.
Just bad luck or bad lag, maybe? I'd also be happy to offer advice when I have the time.

Fun fact: even if it looks like there's little to no lag in your online match, there's still enough to screw you over. You know how grapple is technically R+A? Well the Left trigger just auto inputs that combo instead of being a secondary grapple input. And sometimes thanks to lag it doesn't input it correctly, only giving you the A portion. As a result, as Samus trying to grapple beam onto a ledge corner, I have died numerous times because the game made me do a neutral or side air instead of firing the grapple beam.
I've also found it nearly impossible to pull off Marth/Lucina's full side-B combo, because the slight lag makes the game think too much time has passed between button presses. Nothing quite like trying to do a side-down B flurry and then the game making you counter nothing and be exposed.
With those two grievances aside, I'm having a surprising amount of fun in the 1v1 glory matches. I say surprising because I've always been about 4-way FFA with nearly all items enabled, and 1v1-no-items-final-destination just seemed sterile to me.

I don't see how that would solve the issue, since you're just moving the "Grab" command from L to Y, and when you hit the "Grab" command the game just simultaneously inputs "Shield" and "Attack" for you, instead of issuing an actual "Grab" input.

It's the only explanation I can think of for the game making me do air attacks when I hit L in an attempt to grapple a ledge as Samus. It happens pretty consistently when there's even the slightest amount of lag, and often enough to be an annoying problem when there's no apparent lag.

One of my major gripes with the game is the music and the stages.
There are some wonderful stages for the game and the return of my favourite Mushroomy Kingdom. However, I find that there are some stages that did not need repeating such as Brinstar, Corneria and Jungle Japes. This is the third time those stages have been in Smash and frankly, I find them bland. I think Jungle Japes is the worst of the lot followed by Brinstar. Why Nintendo has not capitalized on the DKC:Returns games for stages is beyond insane.
Another stage I cannot stand is the godawful living room stage and the new Pictochat stages. The Living room stage just has awful design (much like the Nintendogs Assist trophy) and the Picto Chat stage seemed just unnecessary.
Honestly I would have loved to have seen a Sky Sanctuary battleground (such a great track) or if we are going back oldschool, a Kitchen Island themed stage. That would have been great.
With the music, I find it hit or miss, especially regarding Megaman. As far as I know, there are only two tracks from megaman; a Megaman Medley and an 8 bit variation. Given that the series has so much great music available, why those 2. Where are tracks like Electrical Tower, Megaman 3 Intro, Megaman 2 Wily's Castle, Protoman's theme etc etc. There is so much wasted potential.
Still I do enjoy the game.

I enjoy Living Room's gimmick, since it's predictable and can be exploited, and I enjoy stages with transforming layouts. However, I wish it didn't KO so easily, and I wish the stage was smaller in general and had ledges.
I find a lot of Smash4's stages are like that. Would be enjoyable if it weren't for one or two easily identifiable elements that make it a pain in the ass. The Flying Men, the Yellow Devil, Find Mii's random stat changes, and so on.

I honestly have no really issue with places like arena ferox and Unova League but the fact Nintendo had to reuse Jungle Japes and Brinstar three times is obnoxious. I could think of a half a dozen different places that would be just as good as thoise 2 from the same games
Oh and I was wrong, there are 2 more megaman trakcs.

10-12-2014, 07:33 PM
I'd like one or two larger levels, but that can't be helped as the game has to zoom out and that's unfeasible for 3DS size screens. But more levels without stage gimmicks would be greatly welcome. Practically every 3DS stage except for the usual Final Destination and Battlefield has an extra gimmick, the mildest being the transforming ones like Arena Ferox and Prism Tower. More stages that would be viable for For Glory, rather than it just being Final Destination alone (seriously, why isn't Battlefield part of that? Much less friendly for youknowho). I get the impression that the design ethic for the 3DS stages was exclusively 'party' stages because really, once the Wii U version is out that'll be the one exclusively used for more 'serious' fighting. But I don't know what the announced stages for that version are like, I haven't paid much attention and I'm unlikely to get a Wii U. Perhaps if there's DLC for the 3DS it might make it better.
In other news, I cannot get above 10% win rate in For Glory :(

Went ahead and bought a Wii U over the weekend; my sister and I played Smash with wiimotes and nunchucks since there's only 1 gamepad and we both wanted to be on an even playing field (game theory in action!). Really enjoying it, wiimote controls aside. The starter roster has most of the new characters already available, and I'm liking even the weird ones a lot more than I expected. WiiFit Trainer's smash attacks are really effective, Villager is a bizarre yet fun little wildcard, and Bowser Jr is a blast to play. Robin is taking some getting used to: He's kind of a halfway point between Marth and Zelda. I was honestly expecting to hate Pac Man, but he's pretty good as well. Rosalina's neutral B attack is a BEAST when charged and I adore it. She's otherwise fairly weak though-- a strange sort of Olimar/Ice Climbers hybrid, granted she does have some neat mechanics and her ability to use Luma to fight from a distance is neat. Gunner Mii Fighter is also amazing. Great animations for the character.
I also dig Luigi's new double-jump animation.

I've read reports that Nintendo has given no official word that they were discontinuing the adapters. Which although grammatically correct still feels like a weird sentence whenever I read it. It's a safe bet they'll be making more adapters since the damn things print money. It's also very nice having a Gamecube controller with some actual length in the cord. It works as well as it ever did, up to and including the rumble.
Relatedly, there is now a driver that lets you use it (and your Gamecube controllers) with your PC. (http://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/2nmv1v/wii_u_gamecube_controller_adapter_driver_for/)

There's some issues going around thanks to the latest update that can potentially brick your WiiU. Current consensus seems to be that playing online can cause SSB to crash, resulting in an error the next time you launch the game. This error can also show up if you turn off your console while online (unsure if this means in a match, or simply in the online menus after connecting to the nintendo network). This error will stop you from playing SSB. People thought deleting the latest update would fix said error, but it ended up bricking their systems.
So until this is fixed, whatever you do: don't delete any system data. Avoid playing online, or at least ensure you back out to the main menu before powering down, so you're disconnected from the nintendo network.
edit: just to be clear, there seems to be more comments online about people not having any issues whatsoever than people encountering the error, so this could be a rare, isolated issue. Still, better safe than sorry.

Current consensus seems to be incorrect. It's an issue with WiiU hardware itself, most likely, not Smash.

Yeah they might have only produced a few to test the waters. Since they sold out so fast, they'll probably make more soon.

Little late to the thread - I JUST picked up a Wii U. Smash was the deciding factor between the Wii U and a PS4.
I am a little dissapointed that some of the amiibo figures are not available anymore, as well the game cube controller adapter (except of course for the adapters and amiibos on eBay available for dumptrucks of money).
But! The Mario/ Luigi / Peach/ Yoshi themed 'GameCube styled' controllers are available and seem to work just fine as a Wii more attachment (as well as a neat collectible).

I too recently got a WiiU, I was planning to get one since last year and i got a couple games with it too (I got that 3d world bundle, and added smash, mariokart, and bayonetta to it.) If anyone wants to add me on the nintendo network, I am as usual Ramary.

Hey, anyone who wants to Smash online sometimes, PM your Nintendo ID to me. I play Sonic as my main and I'm not very good! But I'm good company on chat between rounds.

Does anyone 3DS Smash? I'm not sure if I'm terrible at it (I was decent at Melee back in another lifetime) or if the controls are loose. I seem to get a lot of unfortunate laggy deaths online. My Mighty Yoshi is winless after about 20 bouts :(
