View Full Version : Pokemon Sun and Moon: Adorable Starters Edition
The Starters and Legendaries got released today. (www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-video-games/pokemon-sun-and-pokemon-moon/)

As per the usual, I'm fairly certain the fire starter (Litten) is the most adorable and amazing.
The Legendaries look like a Sun-faced lion monster and the Moon Queen of all Zubats.

Looks like we're going on a tropical vacation this time.
Which is really funny for me because when I ran a Pokemon RPG game for my friends a year or so ago, I made up my own region from scratch and based it off of the Hawaiian Islands. There weren't any new pokemon or anything, I just picked out 150ish that looked like they'd be in a tropical region.

The owl and cat both rule. The seal....
Hawaii is cool and makes sense due to the huge expat Japanese population and given that and the tropical imagery it was going to be Hawaii or Brazil.
Also character customisation is back. The trailer shows clothing changes and

If I actually played Pokemon I'd definitely choose the seal because everyone on the interwebs is hatin' on the seal right now and that poor cute animal did nothing wrong, what the fuck do you all have against cute seals?
Nothing, it's just not the fire starter. If it was a fire seal, it'd be my starter.

Although my judgement won't matter because I always pick the fire starter regardless of everything, so Litten #1 all day every day.

Why is fire such a popular element among Pokemon players?
phil_
05-13-2016, 12:28 AM
Because one-in-two pokemans is water type and grass is so boring it's weak to bugs.
Addendum: What's more fun, watching grass grow or watching fire grow?
P.P.S.I'd choose the sealIf it was a fire seal, it'd be my starter. It's a sea lion; seals don't have visible ears. It's like you didn't spend your childhoods watching sea lion shows at Kings Dominion.

The sea lion is reminiscent of clowns and clowns are creepy and terrible.
The professor looks cool and I hope he ends up nearly as cool as the best professor. Rowan the Asshole.
P.P.S.It's a sea lion; seals don't have visible ears. It's like you didn't spend your childhoods watching sea lion shows at Kings Dominion.
I know it's a sea lion. I've been using the terms interchangeably because I'm too lazy to type one more word sometimes.
To answer Snake about fire types: For me it was the nostalgia of going at the early game in hard mode with type disadvantage against Brock and Misty's gyms back when I was playing Red and Blue. Plus Charmander was my favorite starter then and has since colored my expectations for every other Pokemon game.
EDIT: Plus all the fire starters in the TV series have been the most adorable.
EDIT EDIT: Except Tepig. He was the only fire starter I wasn't overwhelmingly happy to have. But that might have just been me suffering from Fire/Fighting fatigue.

In Gen 1, I varied up who I picked, so I can't say any real preferance either way.
Gen 2, I went with the fire type because I thought it was the cutest, and Quilava is probably my favorite Gen 2 pokemon.
Gen 3: I went with the grass starter... I think it was this point that I really started to lean to the reptilian types.
Gen 4: Back with the fire type, as Gen 4 was rather lacking in them.
Gen 5: My favorite: Serperior, from the grass-type starter (Notice a trend?)
Gen 6: Once again, fire type with Fennikin, and I was quite satisified with the psychic attacks of the final form.
Gen 7 seems to be the one that bucks my trend.
I look forward to the battles.

Grubbin might be evolve into something special down the line. The pokedex entry that was provided for Grubbin implies it might gain an electric type.
"Grubbin relies on its sturdy jaw as a weapon in battle and as a tool for burrowing through the earth. Grubbin loves electricity, which is why it can be found near power plants and substations. By wrapping tree branches in the sticky threads that it spews from its mouth, Grubbin can swing around like an actor on suspension wires!"

I'm loving pretty much everything I'm seeing from this game. Looks like it's really shaking up the formula but remaining distinctly pokemon. My only complaint is they finally make a grass dragon and they give it to one of gen 1's worst pokemon?

So they're adding a way to track and train IVs now. (http://www.serebii.net/sunmoon/hypertraining.shtml) I think this is a great choice, since IVs are a horribly obscure mechanic that can only be manipulated through excessive hours spent breeding. However I already have some friends on Facebook who are elitist breeders when it comes to pokemon (spending those hundreds of hours breeding to get the "perfect" pokemon) complaining about the addition.
Also I really hope those sketches aren't the actual final form, mainly because I don't want yet another Fire/Fighting starter.
If it turns out they are true, then I guess I'm picking a grass starter for the first time ever.
Kyanbu The Legend
08-01-2016, 07:21 PM
No matter what they say, there's really no skill to IV breeding. It's grinding that was overdue for a retool. And I'm glad we can finally train them even farther to max out IVs since it's required to play in competitive and actually stand a chance.

Agreed. Although I hope we'll also have the option to train them in the other direction, reducing stats too. Stuff like Gyro Ball which works best when your speed stat is lower, pure special attackers who don't want Atk stat in case of confusion affliction, or trying to get the right combo of IVs for Hidden Power (They should fix up Hidden Power so Fairy type can be used).
Heh, imagine the justification for it:
"Magnezone lounged about on the couch watching for a week; Its Speed IV dropped by 1!"
Flarecobra
08-02-2016, 11:57 AM
Interesting thing, looking at the formula... it's not really all that easy to get a dark-type Hidden Power attack.
HPtype= [(a+2b+4c+8d+16e+32f)*15/63]
where a, b, c, d, e, f (the "type bits") are the least significant bit of their respective IV's. If a number is odd, its least significant bit is 1, and it is 0 otherwise.
a depends on the HP IV.
b and c depend on the Attack and Defense IV's respectively.
d depends on the Speed IV.
e and f depend on the Special Attack and Special Defense IV's respectively.
And as a result, the sum will end up somewhere between 0-15, which then translates to the element type the attack will be.
So to include Fairy, they'll have to completely rework the formula... which really should be done anyway because having a less then 2% chance for a dark-type HP attack while everything else is 16%-17%... yeah.

Alolan Rattata- Dark/Normal
"In Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, you'll discover Rattata that are different from the Rattata you've met before. Unlike ordinary Rattata, urban areas are Alolan Rattata's main habitat. They are nocturnal and live in nests of several dozen. Alolan Raticate serve as their bosses.
As a countermeasure to the exploding Rattata population in the Alola region, Yungoos were imported and released. To better avoid Yungoos, Rattata changed their preferred environments and circadian rhythms. These adaptations to their new environment led to their changed form.
Alolan Rattata have an excellent aptitude for sniffing out delicious fresh foods in Alola. They pay no attention to foods that aren't fresh."
And also, a new trailer.

There's usually a 1 gen gap between eevolutions so there's that adding to the chance of there not being any new ones this time around.

Yup, Poor little guy is going to be greatly ignored outside of it's fans depending on how it's final stage performs. It's hard to complete with semi-Mega Greninja.
I mean, Ash-Greninja still has to compete against a regular Greninja with Protean. It's going to have to get quite the upgrade to make it worth not using that ability.

So what's special about Ash Greninja aside from fancy looks?
I believe it has a special unique attack.
If it is anything like the anime, then it'll boost up its existing 'signature' move (Accelgor is the only other pokemon with Water Shuriken in its movelist and its Non-STAB) Water Shuriken to a level comparable to the Naruto series' Rasen-Shuriken, possibly on top of some stat boosts.
*View video at the 5:55 mark.* Spoiler alert as this episode is the final battle of the Kalos League.
fchgGqjDZD0?t=355
If my hypothesis is true, then the difference between Protean Greninja and Ashinja is that Protean is more of a mixed element attacker that relies on taking advantage of super effective hits, perma-STAB and damage-buff items like Life Orb to make up for its merely average Sp.ATK stat (103), while Ashinja would have higher stats and a single nuke-move (would it still have priority?) at the expense of requiring that it manages to defeat a pokemon first to trigger its transformation, making it a poor lead but excellent revenge-killer. (That and Water Shuriken is viewed as a sub-par water type move compared to Hydro Pump and Surf in its base form when it has yet to defeat an enemy). Reliance on a single move would also make it more vulnerable to the move Torment (or the ability Cursed Body). And if the Water Shuriken move is still water-type, Ashinja would be walled by those that resist or absorbs water type moves.

My guess is the Ash Water Shuriken will probably have a base power of 120+ if it's not treated as a Z move.

So there have been a couple of small leaks.
Alola Grimer, who will be Dark/Poison. Presumably a Muk version will follow soon.
And Jangmo-o will be evolving into a Dragon/Fighting type.

The more stuff that I see about Sun and Moon the more I'm convinced to skip this generation. The additions and changes they are making look really cool, and I'm sure the mechanics of the game will be great, but I really dislike a lot of the designs/look of the new pokemon and the Alola forms. Like, Black/White and X/Y had a lot of designs that I really liked, and my teams in those games were almost exclusively new pokemon (well obviously for B/W since you didnt get old pokemon until after the Elite Four, but even after that point I kept a lot of the new pokemon on my team).
But looking at the designs for these new pokemon and I can't help but glance over at my copy of Alpha Sapphire (which is my first time playing gen 3) which remains unfinished because I can't stand the majority of the gen 3 designs. Not to mention the amount of water routes in the game, which seems like Alola will share as well.
I hope the games do well, and that they carry over the successful bits to the next generation, but I don't see myself playing this iteration of the game.

I'm liking Type:Null's evolution so far, Silvadi. Beautiful and it can be what ever type it feels like being through the use of it's own version of the "plates" held items.
The versatility is strong with this one.

Pokemon Sun/Moon demo has been released. People have been attempting to data-mine the game. It was discovered that while Nintendo has removed the default sprites of the pokemon from the demo hidden data, they forgot to remove the shiny sprites. Nintendo has been trying to perform damage control on various sites and forums, but much of the damage is already done. (Someone is gonna get fired for this oversight...)
So in essence, all new pokemon sprites have been data-mined (at least those that have been encoded in the demo in the first place).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJnB7EHQ2XU
This gen looks like a smaller one to be sure. Fewer new pokemon, many of which are just Aloha version of pre-existing pokemon. (Unless there is more pokemon that just haven't yet been inserted as data in the demo).
The fact that the Ultra-Beasts have their own shiny sprites hint that they might be capable of being captured. Although the shiny sprites could be there just to prevent glitches (like ??? typed Arceus being in the code in its first iteration. Just cause its there doesn't mean the players will use it or even see it in normal gameplay.)
No new megas. They seem to be focusing on Aloha forms and Z-moves.
Several new moves are revealed as well (perhaps not in the above video). Moves like Aurora Veil (Reflect and Light Screen at the same time but likely limited to a select few ice type pokemon like Aurorus), Psychic Terrain (Increase power of psychic moves, those on ground cannot be affected by priority moves), Laser Focus (The move used right after this move is 100% sure of critting), and Throat Chop (Disables 'sound moves' like Hyper Voice, Supersonic, Sing, and essentially all moves that Soundproof would block).
Wimpod's evolution is amazingly terrifying! Similar in impact to Magikarp evolving to a Gyarados. The evolution looks like it could fit in an Aliens Vs Predators movie (and possibly WIN).
Peckipeck's evolution seems to be single stage (like Swellow). The alternative idea that people are thinking of when they look at the video above where it changes species entirely from Woodpecker to Toucan (like I thought at first glance) is honestly nonsensical. Or at least I hope it is.
EDIT: Also, the previous thoughts I had about AshGreninja (Ashinja?) seems to be correct. Apparently its hitpoints and both defense stats stay as is, its speed stat takes a small increase of 10, while both attack stats jump by 50 points each, violating previous examples of mega-evolutions being 100 point increase (although its technically not a mega and it needs to defeat a pokemon first before it can change form). Also Water Shuriken is being changed to being special type this gen, and Battle Bonding to Ashinja makes Water Shuriken stronger.
According to Serebii, Z-moves have their power and physical/special typing based on what the power and physical/special typing of the base move that is being used to make the pokemon eligible for the Z-move.
For example: Gigavolt Havoc from Thunderbolt is 175 base power and Special. Nuzzle makes it have 100 and is Physical. Electro Ball it is 160 and Special.
Paralyze status affliction nerfed to reduce a pokemon's speed to half, instead of 25%.
EDIT2: Why do several of the Aloha forms basically consist of "normal pokemon + slight shape-change + human body hair"? Aloha Geodude, Rattata, Diglett (FABULOUS. =3 ) are basically the same pokemon but slap on a human-hairdo. >_>

Chances of the fire starter's final form being fire/dark is fairly likely actually. That character is based off Japan's famous wrestler heel of the 80s Tiger Mask (who in turn was a homage from a manga with the same name). According to TVtropes, 5 other wrestlers have adopted that persona since then.
But anyhow, given the dark type proliferation for dirty fighting, a heel from the wrestling scene is fitting.

I was kinda wording it as a funny reaction rather than accurately, but sadly you've missed it, they are doing these daily events. There's a girl with a sprained ankle who was waiting for the "strong gentleman" who helped her when it happened to meet her with the implication of going on a date with him. The daily event yesterday (or the day before?) was that the "strong gentleman" finally showed up and was a Machamp.

Yup. Apparently we got a couple more auto-weather users now. Like Torkoal for Drought, Vanilluxe for Snow Warning, Pelipper for Drizzle, and Gigalith for Sand Stream.
So I guess weather teams will have a bit of a resurgence, if they can fit those pokemon on the teams.
Ice teams also get a boost in "Slush Rush", which is basically Sand Rush for Hail-teams. Whether any usable pokemon will get it remains to be seen. Excadrill had its vogue age due to its great offensive/defensive typing, and a base speed stat of 88. In comparison, Beartic, the only known owner of Slush Rush only has a single type (ice) which is great offensively but terrible defensively, and its speed stat is merely 50, which still lets it be outsped by a significant portion of viable pokemon.

So Alola versions of Kanto pokemon have mostly the same stats as there classic counter parts.
I don't know what makes me sadder. the fact that my version (Moon) doesn't have Vulpix or the fact that ninetails didn't get any noticeable buffs out side of a slight speed increase(?).

So I'm now up to Puni island (the fourth Trial).
All I have to say is wow they didn't even try all that much to hide the fact that there was something very wrong with that organization.
And wow she's quite insane by pokemon villain standards. She kinda makes Team Aqua/Magma look sane by comparison. That scene of her meeting a UB for the first time face to face was a bit creepy. Like pure lust and it being a jellyfish-mon kind of doesn't help either.
Loved the Sound Track so far and while some trials are a bit disappointing (especially early on). I do like a lot of the ideas and concepts behind them. And I'm enjoying the game so far over all though it's still almost as easy as Gen 6. That said I do appreciate that they tried to make a it a little harder with all of the item changes and not giving you super training from the get go. You almost never need to grind but the game will punish you if you skip too many trainers.

Yes, there are a several side missions you can take on almost every island that rewards you with a lot of money. They're basically catch missions. You talk to an NPC (usually in the Pokemon Centers and Aether Trailers) and they ask you to catch a certain pokemon and show them the pokedex entry for it.
And like X/Y there are Job missions as well, though I don't know all of them yet. Some of them are on the Beaches revolving around you picking up items/beached Water pokemon/ect around the beach. Basically cleaning duty.
So, I've beaten the elite four, become the champion, and am now working on filling out my pokedex and breeding up some pokemon for my wife to have when she does her run-through of Sun. I've not visited the Battle Tree yet because apparently Red and Blue just ambush you out of the gate and want to battle and I want to have a meaningful team together when I have that fight.
