So, I have recently gone into a bit of a Megaman craze. When I was younger I didn't really have any interest in the series whatsoever, but I played and loved Megaman 9 enough to do a flash movie about it (which I might link in the Drawing section when it's done or something). I also recently started playing Megaman X because I remember watching my friend play once.
I figured, since Megaman 10 has been announced and everything, why not have a thread about it? Who here is a fan of the games? Which ones were good? Who agrees with me that the story occasionally takes itself WAY too seriously...? |

I've played most of the original series, as well as most of the Mega Man X series. I have very little to say that is bad about the series, besides that each game has SOMETHING that will piss you off unless you know the trick to it and/or memorize what you need to do and then perform the actions with perfect precision. It could be the Yellow Devil fight, Quick Man's instant-death segment, figuring out which of your eight weapons is the only one to hurt the boss that takes half your bar off a hit, jet bikes, whatever.
ANYWHO, onto the games as I recall them. Mega Man 1 is a giant bitch. A couple glitches aside, there is also the game-stopping (As far as I know) problem of beating a certain boss (Elec? Cut? I forget just who exactly >.>) before Gutsman, as you need an item found in a specific stage for one of the Wily stages. Still though, it's the original, so I'd give it cred there. MM2 is my favorite in the series, because Metal Blade is the single most broken weapon in ANY Mega Man series. Huge amounts of ammo, as well as most bosses being weak to it, make it the weapon of choice. MM 3-6 are a blur, honestly >.> Snake Man was a cool stage, but the boss and his power were stupid and I hate that I need to use it on Wily. Rush killed the difficulty of more than a few segments of the game, and I enjoyed the dog immensely. MM7 did a lot of things right, and is right behind 2 for my favorite of the original series. A couple neat secrets, some neat powers, and one hellish Wily fight make it a blast to go back and play. MM8 was... Eh. It just never clicked with me. MEGA MAN X IS THE BEST MEGA MAN GAME EVER AND I WILL PERSONALLY SLAP ANYONE WHO DARES SAY OTHERWISE. MMX2 had some great level design, and an honest to god X versus Zero fight. It introduced the Air Dash, and overall just improved on everything great that X did. MMX3 improved level design even MORE, added a sidequest that altered several endgame bosses, and had my favorite "secret" weapon which was X using Zero's saber to wreck shit. MMX4 was a big change for the series, but in a good way. Two-part stages, some really unique weapons (Cyber Peacock's, for example), and the ability to play as Zero, who utilizes boss powers completely differently from the traditional MM style. MMX5 practically fellates everything fans remembered about the original series, as well as finally gave us a "final" fight between X and Zero. Yellow Devil? Now it's the Black Devil. Quick Man's death beams? Back for another round! And that's all I've really played. Still a lot of games, but I've touched on only a small portion of the MM games out there >.> |

Don't think I ever payed attention to the story, Zero series excluded. Bad robots, steal their power, kill nigh-invincible last boss.
Anyway, the series as I've played it: X - Was my first one, still love it. It's not hard, until you hit the non-power stealing bosses. Then shit hits the fan. Finding the Armor Pieces was awesome though. After that, I got Wily Wars which I recall was the first three NES Megaman games. MM1 - It was hard as fuck and I don't think I could ever beat a boss in it. Of course, I was quite young, but still. MM2 - The difficulty goes down a bit, and it has a power you can charge(Or was that in MM3?). That is, until you hit the last boss. MM3 - My favorite, added Rush and the Slide, found it much easier than it's predecessor but also much more fun. Then skipped it straight to the PSX where you get: X4 - If you liked Zero, this is the part where you get a hardon. Guy's playable and has whole different powers from X, not to mention a different story. X5 - Double the orgasm, now you can swap between then after each misson, although that may cause some problems with the Health upgrades. Again, X and Zero got different playstyles and stories. X6 - Here it gets tricky. Zero isn't playable at the beginning and you might screw things up for him, if you unlock the guy late in the game. X got three armors in this one, if I'm not mistaken. I remember disliking the story in this one, but not exactly why. After that it migrates to the PS2, but I lost the interest in playing it on the consoles. However, Nintendo brought the series back into their portables and gave us a couple of new series. Megaman Zero - My favorite, enjoyed the story and although the levelling system in the first one is pretty annoying, it gets better later( Z3 and Z4 pretty much perfected the playstyle). Ranking system gives you a nice challenge. Battle Network - I...wasn't fond of this one. Thought it was repetitive, and most of the cast unlikable. However, if you enjoy breaking games, this might be a good choice for you. Also, a port of Megaman & Bass. It's on the 'hard as fuck, but pretty nice' category. Zero series later got upgraded to ZX on the DS. It's pretty much a nicer Zero, although I wish the map was easier to explore and we'd get some instructions as to what exactly the powers/armors abilities are. And...I think that's all. There's Command Mission on the PS2 and Battle Network Something on the GCube, but never played those. |

Mega Man Zero 3 was the best. Fact.
Mega Man Zero had the best final boss fight, though. |

I never got into the MMZ games. I forgot to mention MMZ1, which I did beat eventually. I hated the grading system, though I forget if it was the "Punishes the player for being good by denying them future power-ups" or the "Punishes player for doing poorly by denying future power-ups", or even the "Punishes player for daring to use power-ups" model. Either way, I hate being evaluated by the game, as it makes me feel like I need to play the game the way it wants me to play >.> |

Mega Man Zero had the best solid platforming and action but some of the arbitrary ELF shit was just batshit bananas, and nobody can decide what his third weapon is through the entire series. Is it a shield? A rod? A chain? Nobody knows!
Mega Man X is pure love all the way through. Sure it isn't exactly complex but it's long before they felt like piling more bullshit onto the game. EDIT: I did like bonuses for beating bosses in quicker times and whatnot, but if that's the case then what the fuck is up with the lives system? It's hard enough without taking it from the top each three failures.

I personally played the hell out of X4, X6 and the first three MMZ games and like those a lot. I don't like the original MM series because I'm terrible and they're too hard. And battle network is incredibly repetitive ugh. |

The thing about MMX is that it's too easy during the platforming sections. Boss fights are challenging enough, but everything else in the game is a cake. I feel like MMX2 beat it soundly on that arena.
As for why MMZ3 is better than MMZ, I'd say it is because of the simplified Elf System. |

Plus if you fight them out of order the game gets tougher (Flame Mammoth without beating Chill Penguin turns half the stage into instant-death). EDIT: I honestly think that very few games can get away with Mega Man retro levels of difficulty anymore. This is why I still love Mega Man X - if you're good at it, the skill is the deciding factor rather than three-lives death and repeat. Plus it was the progenitor of so many platformers, and it was the first SNES game I got when I was young that made me look at the graphics and go holy shit yes.
