I'll point out that I don't consider this a career. I *utterly suck* at programming. I'm just not organized enough, nor do I possess enough passion for it. I'm only doing it to kill time, and LordJ's editor is fairly easy to use.

Really late to the thread and this point was apparently never raised again but:

I don't know what her name is in the Japanese version or what the intended pronunciation of her name was in the US release, but I've always pronounced it "Sell-less." As in, "Celestial." Although I've never noticed this before, this does seem to fall in line with Squaresoft's naming scheme for its main characters. It also serves to play against the other female protaganist: Terra=Earth, Celes=Sky.

Here is a picture of what Final Fantasy 6 (that is, the original Japanese Release) prints Celes' name as.

Look I know I suck at drawing kana. Not the point. This is the hiragana for "SE," the katakana for "RI" (pronounced "ree") and the katakana for "SU," whose "u" sound is silent.

"SERISu"

That sounds like Celise to me.

And furthermore!

This is a similarly self-blaming and self-punishing character named "Lise" in Seiken Densetsu 3 (the unreleased sequel to Secret of Mana).

I told you, where there's coffee, there's research.

SIDE NOTE: Feeding this post through the Google Translator from English to Japanese and back again twice somehow seemed funny, so I'm going to go get some sleep before I collapse into a pile of my constituent elements.

I mean come on.

Default I hate katakana because I haven't learned it. Why the fuck is hiragana "se" in here?

I'm pretty sure we can safely say, "FUCK KATAKANA."

So that's one argument against Serisu.

Have fun. Almost nothing in the game blocks or absorbs wind.
I think my favorite thing about this setup is that outside of Tempest and Stray Cat, everything here is lategame stuff that you need to put serious effort into getting. And it's all relatively pointless since even when naked Gau with Stray Cat rocks the house anyways.

... hell, I haven't played a fresh run of this in so long I've forgotten, but doesn't Gau start with Stray Cat? At the very least I remember it being one of the earliest rages you can get. Guard Leader was another good one.

It's a real easy one to get, but I can't remember if he has it to begin with...

But yeah, Stray Cat and Marshal are really all Gau needs before you leave the Veldt the first time. Of course, even if you're not doing Wind God Gau, giving Gau the Master's Scroll is never a bad idea.

Another early favorite of mine is to pick up the Destroyer rage after the Magitek Research Facility. Who doesn't love to have Reraise before the World of Ruin?

Of course, late-game rages can get pretty awesome. Magic Pot, Holy Dragon, Great Behemoth, Tonberry, Yojimbo...

Though to be fair, Japanese doesn't really have a character that really makes the second sound in "cell-ess" because the other closest one would be "re" but that's "ray" and then we would all be discussing if Celes' name is "sey-ray-s". Or maybe "ra" and then it would be "sey-rah-s".

Also, just saying, that "se" is pronounced "say" so it still doesn't sound like "cell"-anything, if we're being picky.

Phonetics!

Definitely. I was just thinking Batman/FF6. But let's go wider.

Terra - Superman: Sole survivor of a doomed civilization, natural abilities beyond those of any human.
Locke - Batman: Dresses in black, is sneaky.
Edgar - Reed Richards: Genius, inventor and misogynist.
Sabin - The Thing: He can rassle a train!
Celes - Wonder Woman: Not quite as good as Superman, trained soldier, has boobs.
Shadow - Spider-man: Driven by guilt, feared and hated by the public, constantly surprising versatility and utility in battle.
Cyan - The Punisher: They killed his family. Now they're going to pay.
Gau - The Mask: You never know what he's going to do, but chances are good it'll be funny and devastating.
Mog - The Flash: Talks fast and seems to constantly end up defeating guys by moving in repeating, rhythmic patterns. Also, Moogle Charm makes him untouchable.
Setzer - Gambit: Duh.
Strago - Zatara: An endless fount of magical knowledge. Also, father figure to
Relm - Zatanna: Big potential for magic, ends up copying the works of her betters more often than not.
Umaro - HULK SMASH
Gogo - Crazy Jane: Need a bundle of unrelated special abilities in a single covenient but indecisive package? Xe's your guy.
