Haha wow literally just learned about this guy in my Social Psych class. It's just Cognitive Dissonance Theory where people have already put so much time/effort into believing in the Cult that they don't want to realize that it was all just a fraud. They're trying to avoid that dissonance (feeling of discomfort caused by performing an action that is inconsistent with one's beliefs/attitudes).
