Actually, I always got a grass-type, trained it to learn Sleep Powder, and put the damn Abra out while we worked down on the health. It worked best in the earlier games, when after a Pokemon would wake up it would still have to wait a full turn to use another move, so I could put it to sleep again if needed. No such luck in the remakes, but it's still a less expensive method than chucking Pokeballs away.

The newer remakes have an easier way, thanks to special abilities. It takes a bit of a jaunt, but if you catch a Digglett, most of them have the Arena Trap ability, which does not allow teleporting away.

You could also catch a Zubat or Gastly and train them into their mid-thirties or forties and then use mean look to trap them, but that's a little impractical.
