Huh.
... tell me if I'm missing something here about how these USB things work but I'd just put whatever protection stuff I worked out that prevents people from copying the code on the dongle so reliably directly on my game discs. |

But, I'm thinking the game calls back to the software on the dongle, which calls to specific hardware in the dongle, which then calls back to the software of the game? I dunno. Anyway, I'm not much of a PC gamer anyway, but this at least ensures I ain't pickin' up any Ubisoft games any time soon. |

Just something I've heard - and I've gotten a bit of games from unspecified sources before, installed them and played them on m' PC. If I try to do something via USB to my PS3, it throws a great big sulk and makes me pull out the owners manual. Then again, it might just be because I'm terrible with computers.
Also, Penny Arcade and CtrlAltDel. |

Bioshock 2 apparently has three different venues of DRM - Steam, GFWL, and SecuROM.
This is getting completely absurd. Neither side is going to back down and the escalation is just making things worse for everyone else. I try to go legit as best I can but the amount of hoops the company is making me jump through purely for the effort of slowing down pirates for like, a week, tops, is really discouraging. The problem is the company needs to understand that pirates are just going to steal it anyway, and trying to put a halt on it won't do any good other than piss off legit fans who can pirate. Making subsequent worse DRM is just going to put more to the cause. I mean, hell, I rented Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny legitimately, and when it told my hacked PSP (which I use to play retro games) to fuck off I spent hours trying to get it working before just downloading it. Kind of against the point, isn't it? Quote:
I mean I'm not going to say that pirates aren't in the wrong by stealing a game just because they felt justified (as opposed to just not buying it) but the point is "Don't give (title) your money because of the DRM" and if they steal it or not, it's irrelevant to the point.

It's like if I want to support a studio, they should start a paypal account and I'll give them the money that I think the game is worth...
Oh wait, that works out too well. |

So, according to all your opinions, the best games should be freeware and have an option to donate if you like the games?

Not my opinion. My opinion is that you shouldn't bother with anything but the most basic DRM because pirates will always find a way to crack it and trying to make it more secure just screws over the people who actually bought it.

I dunno, I like the dongle option, myself. Offline, secure, and even makes a good feelie! Man, games need feelies again!

Naw, the best games should be so good you'll gladly pay today today's ridiculous prices and feature no DRM whatsoever, and the developers and publishers should be known for trusting their customers to keep to the very basic agreement that they'll buy games in a store and not steal them from the internet, and for being smart enough to realize that no cultural medium exists in a bubble its creator/publisher alone defines.

What I'm seeing is that the more copy-protection and anti-piracy stuff the companies tack onto their products, the more vehement the pirate attacks become.
It's like Bethesda RPG level scaling, but with digital piracy! Also Last edited by Great Cartoonist; 02-19-2010 at 03:40 PM. |
