It's because the user info is now on the left of the post instead of above it.
So there's a minimum size for your posts (including the sig) So yeah, if you only write one or two lines the sig space is really huge. I personally preferred having the info above each post, but having it on the side seems to be more popular.

Well, it probably takes up as much space, or slightly less space overall (for one or two line posts). Instead of having a mostly empty area above your posts, it's now below them.
