Ended up getting this last night. Some thoughts:
You don't need to grind: One of the things I love about this game is that grinding is almost non-existent. The one time I had to was because I didn't have enough candy for a stamp, and it took only one fight to be able to afford it. Granted, I kinda whacked everything that was destroyable, but I also had some leftover candy at the end of the game, so you can probably buy every stamp as long as you open chests and don't skip a lot of fights. Same thing goes for reaching level 10. He knows about Timed Hits: Not an actual line in the game, but this game follows the various Mario RPG mechanics of "Hey, don't make a sandwich while you attack!". While defending is the same "Push this button now!" stuff, the attacks are divided into the said Push-a-Button, a "Spin the analog stick", a "Push this button, BUT A LOT", and finally "Push a button, BUT AT THE RIGHT TIME". Despite the emphasis on button pushing, it's still a good mechanic. It's funny: It's a game from Double Fine, so this is a given. I don't think it's as funny as Psychonauts or Brütal Legend, but only by a little bit. It's got some pretty good moments, particularly one before the third-to-last boss fight. Also, bananafest. Some of the battle stamps are broken as fuck. Namely stunning stamps, as the abilities you get from them have no cooldown at all, meaning at least one enemy will always be stunned. Once you get the 2-ply T.P. stamp, every non-boss battle is a cakewalk. It's a kid's game: While some of the jokes are more older-oriented, combat is very simple(as in you normally only have one attack simple) and often easy on difficulty(stuns aside) and while stamps give you some variety, you can only equip one, so there's not too much customization besides what costumes you bring into battle. This isn't bad, though, since this game can be used like the Mario RPG's to introduce people to the genre. Speaking of variety, combat gets monotonous after awhile. Since you only normally have one or two attacks to choose from per turn, you'll be doing the same thing over and over again. This even bleeds over to the enemies: there are three cannon-fodder races, and each have four classes: melee, ranged, magic attacks, and healing. Thing is, each race has the same stats as the other two. The classes have different stats between them, but(to sum up) if you're fighting three same-classed units of different races, they will have exactly the same stats if they are at the same level. The game is also kinda short. Took me about 8 hours to beat it, and that's with 100% completion. There aren't any bonus dungeons or bosses, either. I can't say if that's good or bad for a downloadable game, just so you know. I would still recommend this game to everyone, but I wouldn't make it a must-have. It's good, but it's not awesome. It is funny, though. Last edited by Donomni; 10-20-2010 at 05:00 PM. |
