Decide how you're going to write your obligatory sidekick character. It need not exactly follow the mood of the game. I had fun with Kieran by making him more thiefy than heroic when I did Lands of Lore.
Doing it should be fun for you, too. If it's not fun, it'll show and not be as good. Even if your fun is venting about how much the game sucks. Also, decide how much viewer input matters. In some cases, it matters a lot, but where I ran into trouble was when the game suddenly got linear. I may have been better off switching format for a while or doing a hybrid, but several other factors at the time led to me just dropping it. I still regret doing so sometimes. Really, though, you can do a great LP without viewer input. Presentation is the main entertainment of these.
