Now, maybe Toastburner's willing to let us think outside the box here, but I think when he says we turned into monsters with a horrible hunger, he means we ate people. Monsters generally don't care about modern jazz when they're hungry (unless they like, devour sound - which seems a little lame)! It likely needs to be something suitably monsterous - if not eating the person, raping them or maybe eating their emotions/dreams/giving them horrible, mind damaging, nightmares.
