I think it would be easier to list video game characters who haven't made me feel something. Let's see. Luigi. No wait, I've sometimes sympathized with his struggle of being the younger brother. Diablo? He's pretty thoroughly unsympathetic. But he does have that wholehearted, passionate sadism that when you think about it makes it pretty hard to not feel one thing or another towards him. Wait, how about player characters? There's about fifty million WoW characters I don't give a rat's ass about.

Default You quietly watch your friends disappear.

Breath of Fire 2 has some really moving bits with its characters. Then there's the scene with Evan before you fight him. You know the one.

Goddammit almost all the cast of Dissidia

Fucking heartwarming sad cutscenes.

Especially in Duodecim when you find out that you're all on a suicide mission and NO ONE MAKES IT BACK ALIVE.

Cutscenes in Scenario 013 seem a lot more sad after you play through 012.

Hell, it feels that way when you replay the 013 missions and you see extra lines of dialog like...

Tidus: "Who's this staff chick? She seems familiar. Oh well, too bad I don't remember her or anything about her."

(slightly reworded)

I mean, to be honest I didn't feel much for most of the Dissidia cast because the writing felt like squirrelking-class fanfiction. But I agree that the potential was there, and I definitely COULD have felt something for them if they had any interaction beside "WHY DO WE FIGHT HURR DURR."

...Speaking of Final Fantasy, I do have one good example of me feeling emotional about characters. Remember Cosmo Canyon in FF7? The end of that.

EDIT: And Robo, the Seymour of Chrono Trigger.

Everything about Final Fantasy 9.

So now I've done my Mondt thing and mentioned FF9. I'll lurk more.

I got ridiculously attached to Mono in Shadow of the Colossus. I kept thinking about how single-minded and obsessive Wander was being so I started crafting this backstory to explain why he was so willing to go on this mission for her. It really kept me going even when the melancholy of the Colossus battles started taking it's toll. The last "boss fight" was the most sad and futile thing I've experienced. Just the fact that he didn't even get to hold her one last time brought me to tears.

For that matter... MGS4 changed my whole perspective on Raiden. I thought he was a whiny tool in 2, and for good reason. I mean, backstory is tragic, but he's just such a douche I honestly couldn't give two shits. But then we see him a few years later when he becomes awesome and then we see how much the dude's really been putting up with (Rose and Campbell "hooking up" wtf is this i don't even) and it's like, damn dude.

Momo from Breath of Fire 3. I WANT TO HUG HER AND SQUEEZE HER AND I WILL LOVE HER ALWAYS.

Dogmeat from Fallout 3. He was the only companion worth anything in that game (Fawkes is pretty cool too though.) The image of a wanderer and his dog just really strikes me as heroic. Kinda why I was so pissed at Rex being inferior to ED-E in New Vegas. All the companions in New Vegas are awesome and I love talking with all of them. Cass and Boone are my favorites.

The main cast from Lufia and the Fortress of Doom. When the big plot twist is revealed you just feel betrayed, and then you feel sad. Then you fight the final boss and then the final moments between the characters and how they mirror the opening...

Dragon Quest 5. Pankraz. I cried manly tears.

The casts of Persona 2 IS, 3, and 4. The characters are probably the best parts of those games. Definitely the case for 4. <3 Chie <3

Rudy from Wild Arms. The part where he cuts off his own damn arm to cast the villain into a black hole is still one of the premier visions of heroic defiance in my mind. Double props for his arm becoming a freaking holy sword in Wild Arms 2.

Aya Brea from the Parasite Eve series. She is a strong woman, who isn't overtly sexual, and she has some depth to her with the whole "Am I still human" thing.

The villagers in Alundra. If you take the time to talk to them after every event you get a glimpse into their lives. Which makes the constant dying everyone in that game does kind of a bummer.

Megaman Legends: <3 Tron Bonne and anyone who says different is a filthy whore of a liar.

Suikoden: The silent protagonist. He just soldiers on, even when you know he has to be suffering emotionally. His best friend bestowed a cursed rune on his arm, which eats the souls of people who die near him. This includes: The rebel leader, his caretaker, his father, and the very friend who gave him the rune in the first place. Plus he has to deal with that guilt for a long time because the rune makes him immortal.
