The way I see it, the two you really need to keep are Crono and Robo--they hit hard, which is helpful when plowing your way through all those regular enemies without using a fuckton of MP. (Look, I'm an MP miser and an item miser. It's just the way I am.)

So the big choice, for me at least, is Lucca versus Marle. If you expect to need a metric asston of healing, use Marle, because Robo and Marle both do lots of healing but Marle in particular doesn't have great attack spells. However--and this would be my preference--if you'd prefer a more attack-oriented party, use Robo, Crono and Lucca. (But then, you could probably guess I'd say that.)
