This doesn't surprise me. But there's a definite difference between what specific individuals use and find okay and what is okay to use when talking about groups as a whole. Err on the side of caution unless you hear the individual you're dealing with use a particular term and you also make sure it's okay if you use that term when dealing with them.

I was referencing it in regards to anime/hentai genre, not individuals.
