...cause, Lord of the Rings if FULL of filler... Hell i would be hard pressed to find a medium or work that isn't.

Edgar Wright movies in general and particularly Hot Fuzz and most comics by Warren Ellis, Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman and Grant Morrison will tell you all you ever wanted to know about pacing. Hardly a wasted second or word balloon between them.

Though Lord of the Rings works at its own pace in my opinion, at least in the movies. The extensive shots of walks, landscapes and battles serve the mood and the scope of the story. Imagine the travel scenes condensed to the same kind of jagged, noisy, split-second montage that shows Angel's trip to Sandford to such great effect in the beginning of Hot Fuzz! It'd be a direct insult, a painful blow to the way the world of Middle Earth is put together and the lifestyles of its inhabitants. That's not because Tolkien's work is sanctified and deserving to be portrayed with a certain amount of detail and grandeur or anything, but only the observation that the story is put together to be a certain size - a very big size, with a long journey, a large quest, a widespread conflict and vast towering romances and friendships - and permitting it to be that size makes the story work.
