Ok so those movies were awful - How is this relevant to what I was saying at all?

I'm pretty sure people clamored for sequels to the original trilogy more than they ever did prequels, so garnering interest isn't a very valid function of the prequels, especially since their craptasticness makes people wary of the sequels which very well may be far better than the prequels. If anything the prequels prevented sequels from being made--perhaps for the good of us all, I suppose, since now the sequels will be made by someone who isn't George Lucas. That might be the only real upside to their existence.

As for being financial successes, I hardly feel great that a bunch of FOX execs and producers and George Lucas made tons of money off of shitty movies.

Are you seriously suggesting that without the prequel films that the franchise would currently be better positioned to release a sequel series? Because if so you're discounting an entire generation of young fans whose favorite Star Wars media are the prequel series and it's television spin-offs.

Additionally, your personal feelings about the quality of the prequel series (which, by most accounts had at least some high points) do not address the fact that there was not a fundamental shift in genre or focus from 4-6 to 1-3, where there most definitely was from Star Trek to Star Trek 2009, which was actually a better quality film than many of the original Star Trek movies.

I guess my point is that while the quality of Star Wars films may vary, they've always served to benefit the franchise by simply being Star Wars flavored. I'd be willing to tolerate some low quality here and there in Trek films if that means that Star Trek can continue to be about discussions of ethics, science, politics, etc.

JJ feels like such an uninspired choice. Like Disney literally looked at him and thought, 'he's done science-fiction films that are alright, I'm sure he can make a success of this science fiction franchise too.' He feels like very safe option.

I have much preferred Rian Johnson or Darren Aronofsky, although Aronofsky is probably too busy making Noah.

And even that was minimal. JJ met with Damon Lindelof, they discussed characters, themes and came up with the hatch and the smoke monster. JJ did the pilot and then had zero involvement again until Season 3. Even then all he did was write the teleplay. He had no involvement in the story or directing.

Can we at least admit the only reason any of us find Star Wars cool is because of KOTOR?
