Post A story I wrote

I wrote this story for an assignment in english, and I figured why not post it here. It's rather short so it won't take that long to read. Oh, and it's a ghost story too. So, enjoy.

17 Avenue Drive
By The Smiling Assasin

The night was cold and gloomy, and everybody on Avenue Drive was asleep. There was nothing but silence on the lonely street. A single house had its lights on. Number 17. A small car drove up to the house and a tall man stepped out. His name was Jack Deffer, and he was a house appraiser. Jack had a small moustache and short black hair. He wore a trilby hat, a trench coat, and a striped tie. He took a good look at the house. Hmm, doesn’t look too costly from here… Then he scratched his head. Well, the boss asked me to look at it. But why are the lights on?

Putting that thought aside, Jack went to the door of the house to open it. Just before he could touch the doorknob, the door flew open by itself. Slightly unsettled, Jack entered the house. Wow, there is a lot of dust here! It seems to be covering everything…he thought as he looked around.

Just then, he heard a loud thump from upstairs. The thump caused a cloud of dust to fall from the ceiling. As the cloud fell, Jack could have sworn he a face in the dust. And then it was gone. Deciding that it was just a hallucination, Jack went upstairs to investigate the noise. He saw three doors as got to the top of the stairs. He turned to the door from which he heard the noise from and opened it. Upon opening the door, Jack found that he was in a bedroom. The bed was stained red, and Jack could only hope that it wasn’t blood. He saw a large box on the floor, which he guessed must have fallen from the shelf in the room. Naturally, Jack opened the box to see what was inside of it. Jack stepped back and retched at the sight of a human head inside the box. Then when he looked again, the head was gone. Jack walked out of the room and tried to put the image of the head out of his mind. Now he was left with a question. What caused the box to fall? Nobody else was in the house, and there was no breeze in the room…

Jack didn’t think about it for too long, because just then the door across from him flew open in the same manner as the front door. Then it closed just as quickly. With his knees trembling, he walked to the door and opened it. This room appeared to belong to a child. The room was relatively empty, except for a dresser, a small bed, and a mirror. Jack looked at the mirror and observed himself. “Not too shabby!” he said out loud.

Then, all of a sudden, he saw a movement in the corner of the room in the mirror. He turned and looked in that direction. Nothing there. He kept looking and saw it again. He turned around. Nothing there. This happened three more times, each time it was too fast for his eyes to catch. Jack decided to leave the room. As Jack left the room, he heard the faint sound of a child giggle. As soon as he closed the door, Jack heard water running. He turned towards another door. The bathroom. Even more unsettled now, Jack opened the door with his trembling hand. There was a sink, a toilet, and a shower. The shower curtain had been pulled over, and the tap was running. Jack, being the thoughtful fellow that he was, turned off the tap. After turning off the water, Jack heard a muffled sound from behind the curtain. Nervously, he stepped towards the curtain, and then he pulled it, and he saw…a kitten. “Mew!”

“Aww, you’re so cute!” Jack said, reaching out to pet the kitten.

Before he could pet the kitten, a loud Thump Thump Thump came from above. Jack jumped at the sound. It happened again. Thump! Thump! Thump! Jack stepped out of the bathroom and saw a trap door on the ceiling. He reached and opened it, and a flight of stairs came down, leading to the attic. He climbed the stairs to a rather dimly lit attic. The attic was pretty much empty. Then, all of a sudden, a flash of lightning came from outside and hit the roof. There was a loud explosion, causing the lights to go out. Then the lights came back on and Jack saw a body hanging by its hands. A loud scream was then heard. It was coming from Jack. Jack quickly went down the attic stairs, grabbed the cat (for protection), ran out the front door and pealed off in his car.

The next day, Jack was in the office looking up information on 17 Avenue drive. He found that a father and his son had been murdered there, and the killer had been put to death. The father was found in the attic, and the son’s head was found in a box. The killer had claimed innocence up until his death. Then Jack saw a picture of the killer and the main witness against him. He looked at the witnesses face. “Hmm, I’ve seen that face before. But where?” Jack paused. “Wait a minute…the dust! But why would his face be in the dust? Unless he’s the…”

Jack’s boss came by and slapped him in the back. “Hey, Jack buddy! How was that house I told you to check yesterday?”

“Forget it,” Jack said. “Nobody is going to want to live in this house.”

“That’s funny, because this man shows particular interest in the house.” A man stepped beside Jack’s boss.

Jack looked at the man. Then he looked at the picture. Then he looked at the man and the picture again. “Oh hi. I was just reading an article about you…”
