how come it crashed now and not in the last clip where he went on the case and the DW were just standing there like "HI" Weren't they gone then too??

Cartoon law. Nohing happens until somebody is aware of it. Like when Wily Coyote runs off the cliff but doesn't fall until he realises he's standing in midair.

I believe it was supposed to be reminiscent of Poirot and other classic fiction detectives.

Anyway...my favorite part of the strip was Black Mage's comment about Fighter "assailing against" intelligent discourse and Red Mage commenting "'Assail against'? Are you sure about that one?" I get the impression Brian himself was unsure about the line and used RM to express his ambiguity.
