Abandonware and Other Free Games Everyone Should Play!
Alrighty, let's set this up as a thread where people suggest some really cool abandonware, freeware, whateverware games that can entertain those of us prone to boredom.
Ground rules: No ROMs, no warez, no torrent sites WITH wares, nothing that would be considered illegal, lest you want the mods to go totally sickhouse on our asses. I like my ass, gentlemen. Anyway, I'll open up with perhaps the best top-down shooter for the PC.... Tyrian! Oh, the hours I spent blasting away in this baby. And I suppose that Adventure Quest is worth mentioning, it's nice and free, and addicting as all fuck. A good way to whittle down some boredom.

whatever-ware you say? so shareware counts?
Escape Velocity: Nova the best spaceship based game ever made. ever. shareware lets you play up to a certain point in the plot, and lets you access most of the ships and technologies. absolutly amazing visuals for a shareware product, and the size of the galaxy is staggering. and yes, they did make a windows version of the game.

The Spirit Engine - A sidescrolling RPG that's completely free, it's pretty enjoyable and has a decient story.
Gazillionare - A fun trade simulation game in space. I have the full version, but the shareware version is completely playable and just as fun. It just has less content and you can't play long games or over the net.

There is no such thing as abandonware, sorry. That's just a term that's been made up by people who want to self-justify they're use of old titles. Kinda like ROM usage.
Anyway, you *CAN* pick up Beneath a Steel Sky & Flight of the Amazon Queen at: http://www.scummvm.org (PS - They were released as freeware by their respective owners.) Of course, you'll have to do a bit of poking around the extras section of the download section to notice these two titles. Grand Theft Auto 1 & 2 were both released as freeware http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/ Can't think of anything else at the moment. SWK

Eternal Daughter is a pretty good platformer in the way of Castlevania type games.

I'm pretty sure Descent Freespace has went abandonware. Atleast I know the second one was even released as open source. Can anyone confirm that?

Soldat, that is a fun little sid scroll shooter, ill find a link to a place you can download it from, it is completly free, or you can pay 5$ to register it (lets you have multipule multiplayer names, yeah, dont do that)
This is a game with a pretty big fan base and alot of maps being made all the time |
