Default WebComic Question

Just a quick question about webcomics. What file is the background (gif, jpg, bmp)?

The background can be whatever format you please; it's when the comic is published on the web that the format matters. BMP's have file sizes that are far too large to be conventional; JPG's typically have decent file sizes but this depends on the amount of compression the JPG uses. The less the JPG is compressed, the more memory it uses. Also, JPG is a "lossy" format, meaning some information, even with as little compression as possible, is lost and therefore image quality is compromised. Ideally, a webcomic should be published to the web as a GIF or PNG file, with PNG gaining preference due to their versitility and controllable balance between picture quality and file size.

Hopefully this answers your question, though admittedly "background" is a bit vague. If you could be a bit more specific perhaps we can help further.

PNGs have a wider range of colors. I realized this when I used gradients....they looked smooth as a PNG, but as a GIF you could see individual color lines along the gradient.

JPEGs can be good if you use a good compression program. Adobe photoshop has a great "preview before you save" feature under "Save for web" that lets you observer how your quality-filesize balance is looking. If you cannot afford photoshop, download the GIMP (www.gimp.org). It is a quality free program with an excellent (sometimes better than photoshop) jpeg compression program.

For the love of god- NEVER USE MSPaint TO SAVE AN IMAGE AS A JPEG!!!

I'm sure by that she means free, quality program rather than quality-free program.

I recommend going to some sites that you think have good image quality, right-clicking on the images, selecting "View Image", and looking at the extension on them. That should help you better than anything.
