You're a little quick to jump to conspiracy theories methinks. Saddam is dead now; the SotU isn't till the end of January. Not everything is a political maneuver.

Yeah, I agree with Ryanderman.

I mean, it would be like the Republicans to orchestrate something like that, but I don't really think that even they are pretending that something as superficial as hanging Saddam can change opinion on the war, or even give the Republicans/Bush a tiny boost in the polls. The short and long of it is that the Republicans are fucked. Fucked by elephants. I think they're really just trying to lay low until the Dems do something stupid.

As to Saddam -- meh. I mean, I don't mind that he's dead, but, much as everyone else's said, it doesn't really solve anything. However, I guess ultimately, I'm in favor of it, because it probably gave a lot of Iraqis a feeling of satisfaction. I mean, in a culture where revenge is valued so highly, we might as well let them do their own thing in a case like Saddam's, I suppose.

I predict the Democrats doing something stupid will happen fairly soon, they've been gloating far more than is politically healthy. Sling too much mud, and you start getting dirty. Laying low is actually a good move for the Republicans, or at least the best last option.

Saddam dying was unimportant outside of the emotional effect of an evil man being expunged. He had already been removed from power, all that could happen now were a few more pictures of him with wide, terrified eyes and a grandpa-esque beard instead of the smug, sinister dictator we used to all know and dislike.

Unfortunately, in death he may have made he situation worse than it was while he was in custody.

The thing is, for everyone group of people who detested saddam, he also had a large amount of supporters, not just in Iraq, but in the greater Middle East.
