However if you get Total Annihilation, get the expansions and check out the new units and stuff you can find on the web, there are alot of good ones, though also alot of stupidly over powered ones, like the upgraded Krogoth that's too cheap to build. |

What are some RTS with really colorful stylized units, and really massive battles, with lots of action going on?

Starcraft has the colorful units, but is short on the massive battles and has crippled gameplay and interface; WC3 is even worse. So not those. Homeworld (the original) is good, but probably not what you're looking for. Although 150-capital-ship-per-side battles are fairly impressive. Spellforce is also good but has fairly low unit limits (~60 per side per map) and thus is short on the massive battles. It's also not a pure RTS but an RTS/RPG hybrid. The Total War series has plenty of massive battles, but I've never played them and thus can't say how good they are. Act of War: Direct Action, despite the initially unpromising premise, is actually pretty good; but while very shiny it tends to focus on small action-packed battles rather than large ones. The Dark Reign games are in the same boat as FooCraft: nice idea, terrible execution. Don't appear to have any other RTSes on mind worth mentioning at the moment. |

Already tired of Warhammer eh LoJ? Well, there is a game called "World war 1 - the great war" which may not be fantasy but has some of the largest battles the RTS genre has ever seen (up to 80,000 units on screen at a time) on the downside, the game is ancient, looks like a poop-skid graphics wise (but that shouldn't matter), and is incredibly hard to find. If you come across it it's be a good idea to give it a try.

Spellforce is a few years old. Fry's should have it, EB might have it and should be able to order it if they don't.
Spellforce 2 should still be in stores, but I haven't played it and don't know how good it is; avoid the European version, it uses StarForce. I haven't heard of Mark of Chaos. [edit] I have now. |
