I believe the best are FFVII, Grandia 2, FFT (getting past the BS translations), Saga Frontier, and Tekken 2.

I add Tekken 2 purely for the drunkfest competition which lasted 16 hours and I won a Blow-Up Sheep as a prize for my kicking everyone elses keister undefeated :P

EDIT: And Castlevania:Symphony of the Night, because there has never been such kickass music in a game then or since then!

You fail. Grandia 2 was never on PS1. It was released for Dreamcast originally, then ported to PS2, and the PC. PS2 version is crap from what I've heard from numerous people. Grandia, however, is on PS1.

Hey now, no need to be rude, he probably meant Grandia 1, which WAS on the PSX. While it has a somewhat stereotypical story, its a great game.

Valkyrie Profile for the story and style, as well as being a good platform RPG. I wasn't too thrilled with the battle system, though. I'm currently working on VP2; great game.

I second Einhander, Gran Turismo (not GT2!), Xenogears and FF Tactics. Beyond that, the load speeds really do make me steer towards SNES/NES games or gamecube ones.

Since I don't think it's been mentioned, I'll have to suggest Parasite Eve 1 and 2. Maybe not the best games ever, but quite enjoyable. I'm replaying PE2 right now and I'm quite enjoying myself (despite all of my yelling and cursing because of my inability to control myself).

Has anyone suggested Legend of Dragoon yet? If not that's a great game to pick up and it takes a very long time to beat.
