I think its annoying that anytime anyone mentions the Simpsons, even if someone doesn't even make a thread devoted to it and just mentions them in passing or uses them as an example, that the FIRST thing that ALWAYS has to be the next thing out of the next persons mouth or the next reply without fail as a rule is 'The Simpsons has gone downhill'. Like someone went around handing out fliers with detailed instractions:
Step One: Whenever Simpsons is Mentioned Step Two: Always Say it has gone Downhill and what sucks about it. Come on people. We know the Simpsons has has these downhill seasons. We don't need to confirm it EVERY TIME anyone brings up the name! And the thing that annoys me is because we have so many bad shows out there that go on and on with bad seasons or worse, that never have good episodes ever and people never point them out. But why is it a rule that, after 10 excellent to downright AAA episode seasons of the Simpsons, we have to only bring up the ones that are marginal and the few that didn't make us laugh as much as before? I'm sorry, its really just turning into one of my pet peeves because it really does happen EVERY time. Not almost every time or once in a while but 100% of the time I hear about the show on the internet and even in real life.

Talking about how The Simpsons has gone downhill has really gone downhill lately.
I do have to say I've been enjoying the more immediate new episodes. The Conan O'Brien era was legendary, of course, but the current writers seem to be doing okay for themselves. I do sometimes feel like they occasionally try to out-Family Guy their supposed "primetime animated sitcom is serious business for reals" rivals, but it's preferable to their repeated claims that Family Guy was "ripping them off", which is silly. Everyone knows Family Guy is a ripoff of The Honeymooners.

If you're going to have the Inevitable Discussion of The Decline of The Simpsons, perhaps this article might help. (I think it makes some good points, at any rate.)

Sure the Simpsons isnt as funny as it was years back, but I still think its pretty damn funny. I mean, considering how old the show is, not every episode can be AAA quality.

The article makes a good point though. They've done pretty much all there is to do, now. 400 episodes is a good run, but there's not many things they haven't done. Look at how many travel episodes there are recently, because they've run out of things to do in Springfield.

I think the episode of Southpark where they try to do things not done in the Simpsons is relevant to this discussion.

The Simpsons was a good show back in the '90s, seeing that the seasons had characters that had charisma and were worth seeing. Personally, anything before the 300th chapter was great, and I will always treasure my 8th. season of it where Hank Scorpio makes an appearance.
After the 300th chapter, the series were becoming a bit more alike Family Guy, so somehow my attention for the series was falling apart little by little. Although I see one of their new episodes once in a while, especially the Treehouses of Horror, and I found the Mario episode to be fun.
