Well in the new one you can do that in the pause screen to upgrade your weapons to Level 2, but only once per credit (do it again and you die instantly).
Although I can't seem to get the damn thing to work. I think you have to hit B Y instead of B A because of the new set-up on the controls.

Why? Well, I'm sure you remember the original Contra's waterfall level. It was designed in such a way that you had to pace yourself. More importantly, it was also designed so that if you were a dick, you could speed up the waterfall so fast you'd kill your partner. They designed this waterfall level with that principle in mind. It's a brutal and subtle homage to the original game.

Actually I meant because of the DS's "hinge-space" cutting off the view of certain enemies, gun emplacements, and bullets while you are jumping and the screen is scrolling upwards, a problem that really didn't seem to occur on any other stage because they were side-scrolling and thus enemies are always either above or below the "hinge-space". Also some of the jumps that in most Contra games would be possible to make simply by jumping straight upwards to the next ledge are made just impossible so you have to traverse the whole way to the other side to then get to the ledge. Once you remember this and train yourself to go back and forth it's way simpler but when you're first doing it you're so convince you can just jump straight upwards to reach the next ledge like in past Contras that when you CAN'T, and you then die because of it, it's frustrating.
Yeah, I didn't really think of the two-player aspect, you NEED an upward scrolling stage in Contra to make that a part of the gameplay, the scrolling-too-fast-upwards situations where you accidentally kill your partner, which were in the first three Contras. I'm just saying maybe they should've skipped it in this one. I dunno. I'm just saying that they took such an effort to make sure the "hinge-space" and dual screens didn't have the drawback of causing you to easily be killed by a hidden bullet or enemy on all the other stages that the same care should have been taken on the waterfall stage unless it was completely impossible, which maybe it was.

I still haven't unlocked everything yet.
Hard drained my willpower. It took me 3 tries on Easy, 10 on Normal, and 27 on Hard.

I have no idea how, but at one point for some reason I had 99 lives. There was no Konami code involved and, indeed, you can't even do it. I don't know what happened but I ALMOST beat the game with it.

Secondly: Yeah that's a glitch a couple of people have run into. I think someone said you have to lose your last life and earn a life at the same time. |

Has it happened more than once?
You don't have some kind of game genie for the DS do you? That would be awesome and would allow such shenanigans. |

According to Gamefaqs or something I believe you have to kill a boss at the exact moment you lose a life (or your last life, or something), and then on the next stage you're glitched with 99 lives.
What's so wacky is that it would technically be repeatable eight times.
