Sexy, the only thing I'd add would be a 10k rpm HD for games.

Well... it's 3Gb... an Normal PC would Have 2 RAM slots in there... so that means this PC has 1 2gb Chip and 1 1gb Chip
So if you find a Motherboard that accepts SDRAM chips you could in fact take on for the machine and put it in there |

To determine type of RAM, either go to Crucial(.com?) and use their program, or figure out what motherboard you have. It might be compatible, it might not. We can figure that out.
I'd say that the PhysX card is overkill. Slash it and either put the money into a 10k RPM hard drive or just pocket it. Or, alternatively, use the money to replace that 2x512 MB RAM combo with another 2x2GB bit. What brand is your RAM? Most shouldn't have a problem, but better safe than sorry. Same deal with your HDD; if it's not Maxtor/Hitachi, you're safe and sound. Sound card is also not strictly necessary. I'm playing CoD4 with an onboard setup and I can hear them coming just fine. Directionally, too. Bellsouth, 2 RAM slots? Most modern motherboards have 4. Dual channel, as well, which is what I suspect he's trying to run. Arlan, to sum up my questions: What is your current computer's motherboard? Where are you buying your parts? What brands are your parts? What is your motherboard (It's important)? What is your power supply? (I'd say, for this, you'd need at least 600W) Are you going to be running Vista? You won't get that shiny DirectX 10 compatibility out of XP. Finally, what is your budget?

You could stand to upgrade the HD, and I remember hearing somewhere that you should have an even amount of RAM. Like Four 2GB, or 2 1GB. I forget where I heard this, but they said that you should keep the size of the RAM constant and the number even. So 2 512 MB would be better than 1 1GB card.
Don't know where I heard it or even if it's accurate but that's my bit of wisdom, maybe.

Also, a dimm is basically a stick of RAM.

Another thing to keep in mind: Don't skimp out on the power supply. If its not supplying a good clean voltage, you can have lots of problems. There's been many people who've decided that any 'ole dirt cheap generic brand power supply would do, only to have it fry something.
Also, a good guide for figuring out how much Wattage you'll need from your PSU: http://www.firingsquad.com/guides/power_supply/ Last edited by MasterOfMagic; 12-23-2007 at 07:39 PM. |

I can't agree enough on the power supply issue. As for the GPU card... if you can genuinely afford it, I'd keep it. Even top of the line 8800's have some trouble maxing games like World in Conflict, and games are only going to get more GP intensive.
Even if you don't overclock, you're probably going to need a secondary cooling unit if you want to get your money's worth out of that 8800. PS: I just saw that you said its a XPS 720, a Dell model. Dell is notorious for shipping under-powered PSUs in their systems. I know, I also have one. You're spending $5k on a system for gaming....make sure it can handle the amount of power you're planning on asking from it.
