Bathynomus giganteus, commonly known as a giant isopod (though the term is often applied to several species) is a primarily carnivorous deep sea scavenger. First described by Alphonse Milne-Edwards in 1879, they served as mounting evidence against the idea of a lifeless sea floor. Since then they've continue to crawl merrily about the sea floor gorging themselves on carrion and quite possibly serving as inspiration for more than a few movie and game monsters.

They look big enough to ride. Imagine an entire army using those things as mounts. Of course it'd probably have to be a marine army, what with those stubby legs and all. But still, that'd be pretty cool.
