I don't think it's because they got sick of those, but probably they already squeezed all the milk from the classics.

I'm fairly certain that it is referring to how they were made using CG or something to that effect, as I had never heard of a 3-D as in "let's all wear our 3-D glasses while watching this movie" version for either of those movies. Also looking at the article that Kotaku linked to I don't see any reference beyond the ambiguous term of 3-D itself.
But by the gods if the sequel is that kind of 3-D it will kick more than three kinds of ass.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, it does seem odd to use the term "3-D" if it weren't referring to the whole glasses thing. Still, I have never heard of 3-D Nightmare or Chicken Little.

Well given the fact that "3-d" movies with the red-blue cardboard flimsy glasses went out of style like fifteen years ago I'd be hard-pressed to see Disney try and engage in that.

I mean, like, The Rocketeer was a 3-d movie at one point.

The Rocketeer. That movie is ancient.

I don't know about Chicken Little, but The Nightmare Before Christmas has been re-released every Halloween in a 3D version for the past few years. And I know Meet the Robinsons was released in digital 3D on a majority of screens.
