Default Sony: "Why hackaz gotta be like that?"

So recently Sony issued a survey as to why people hack their PSPs.

I mean, really, I've got a hacked PSP. I do it because it's a nice way to have Super Metroid on-the-go. It doesn't mean that I don't enjoy the PSP in general. God of War and Maverick Hunter X are fantastic.

Their double-edged sword questions are just asking for self-incrimination, especially considering "I want to play homemade software on the go" or "I want to work for Sony one day and I figure that taking apart a tiny portable laptop with a D-pad on it is the better way to do that" are not even on the list.

I mean, honestly, that's one of the main draws of the PSP - homebrewed software is kickass, and I've found some pretty neat games and utilities (File organizer, paint program, and the like). But to accept homebrew is to accept piracy, and there are many programs that allow you to hijack the entire UMD, drop it onto a memory card, and pirate it.

As a note: This thread is not to discuss the how or specifics behind hacking. It's just a thread to talk about the benefits and disadvantages of PSP hacking, piracy, and homebrew software and each of the angles you can view it as, especially how Sony's handling it. If you're going to link something be sure it doesn't say anything about a "How-To".

Hacking a PSP makes me feel like a rebel.

Hey guys, I'm so cool I like hack my PSP and shit! Man, I'm such a rebel! EDIT: Crap! DFM beat me.

But seriously, has it not occured to Sony that people like playing homemade games and just adding more and/or better features?

Also, part of me can't help but think that Sony is using this to catch the people doing the hacking.

I doubt Sony has a proble with the hombre games and such, but things like Mirai said, being able to copy a UMD onto a memory stick is bad for the publishers and devs.
