Recently I have been thinking about purchasing an XBox 360 for myself and have been trying to keep the price as low as possible. I ask you, NPF, whether or not I should get a used 360. From what I understand, the 360 is the most death-prone console of this generation, and any used model may be more likely to red-ring on me. But seriously, I only want just enough to play Dead Rising, and getting a 360 for only 200$ looks pretty good. Or should I just suck up and wait for a further price drop of standard 360 models?
If appropriate, please take this opportunity to talk about how fucking awesome Dead Rising is too.

I heard new models are less prone to RRoD. In the end, I would say it depends. Does buying it used mean the warranty is transferred to you? If that's the case you probably should do that, and, when the machine dies, send it back and get a brand new non-death prone 360.

Unfortunately I have been unable to find any menion of actual warranty on Gamestop, and as such I am going to assume worst-case scenario and say that there is no warranty on the used 360. Obviously any sort of free replacement warranty will pretty much alleviate any sort of reservations on getting a used system; any issues would be more along the lines of effectiveness of possible (warranty or otherwise) repairs. Basically, looking at Gamestop (using as an example 'cause it's already in another tab), I can get a used 360 for 200$, but there are no warranties or guarantees other than "this product is guaranteed to work". On the other hand I can get a new XBox 360 Pro for 350$ that also lacks any on-page warranty. Note that I haven't looked for any sort of over-arching/separate warranty page that they attach to all of their products or whatever.
If anyone has suggestions on where I can find/order a 360 as cheap and reliable as possible, I'm all ears (eyes).

I do believe that used consoles have a 30 day warranty while Refurbished have a 90 day.

IIRC, Gamestop offers an extended warranty if you're that worried about it. I don't know how much it costs though...it might end up being a better deal just to buy new and go with Microsoft's warranty.
I could be wrong, but I thought that 360s all come with a warranty now against RROD. Am I wrong?

The warranty for RROD is 3 years, but only for the RROD.
I'm pretty sure if you pick it up and it Red Rings on you, just call MS and say "Hey my 360 broke and I just bought it" and they'll help you. One thing you can do though is, if you do get it, call up MS and ask them if you can check when the 360 was purchased by using it's identification number. Those are checked out every time they're sold and MS knows about each unit that goes out. I sincerely hope they have a records database. So yeah, look into that if you go for the younger one, and turn it in for the warranty and get your money back before it expires. I'm not 100% sure if you can do that but I sincerely hope so.

Here an option in case you're fortunate to be chummy with a game retail employee:
Employees of places like Gamecrazy or Gamestop/EbGames have the ability to purchase refurbished 360's (iirc) straight from Microsoft themselves. Said 360's come with an extra controller, 2 games off some list, some hard drive (all i remember is you could play live), and warranty intact - all for 350-400ish. A friend of mine recently did it and he seems happy with his purchase. Ended up trading one of the games in to get a discount for GTA4. |

New or not, it WILL break down after a while, mine broke down like 2 months
after we got it, thankfully the repairs were done quickly and it is now being sent back after being gone for only a week. However, you should at least try and find more than one game to play on it if you are going to get an expensive system like that. Xbox live can make some games much better if played online with friends. The marketplace also has a ton of stuff for people to buy, from anime to account pictures, from demos to trailers, and from behind the scenes footage to commercial commentary. If you have any questions about the whole xboxlive thing or the xbox360 in general, then you can try this link to xbox.com www.xbox.com I hope this can help with anything else you might need to ask about.

Oh come on, only...what was it, 30% of consoles succumb to RRoD. Mine did after about a year, but I got it back in only a week.
I don't see why used or new would make a difference. Either the console will get RRoD or it won't. What difference does age make? Also, yeah, Dead Rising is forking awesome. One question, though, and this is a real concern: Why in god's name do all of the female zombies drop to their knees upon grabbing you so that it resembles fellatio?! Seriously! I'm reminded of a time when my friend was playing. A survivor he was escorting got grabbed by a zombie, and it zoomed in to show it because she was dead...And the zombie mauling her was laying on top of her upside down. Sixty-nine position, biting at her. This is too stupid to make up. What the hell, |
