More like... Well... Watch Dollhouse? More like Alpha.
That said, my concerns are really well outlined by this blog post. THe TL;DR version is: Obama's team doesn't seem to have a straightforward plan in mind for dealing with this, hacking at the economy with the blunt instruments of stimulus while propping up zombie banks rather than letting them fail and propping up auto companies for political rather than economic reasons. Meanwhile we're still running on t-bills, which are still being sold to foreign investors, who aren't showing up to buy at the rates they used to, meaning that sooner or later the Fed will literally print the deficit (which I've heard could be as much as 30% of our GDP). They don't have a straightforward plan, not even a plan to do nothing cause they ARE doing somethings.

Ever since the beginning of this financial hooligannery there are people who pop up now and then advising that everyone starts hoarding food and stockpiling camping supplies etc. I think of the people here as an island of sanity in the larger world, and do any of you think things are likely to get bad enough for that to be necessary?

In general, I think that fears were whipped up by frequent comparisons to the Great Depression, and even if those analogies were not unfounded, they certainly did not help. |

It's not you personally, it's just that, I think about us being held up as a standard to the rest of the world and, well, I start to cry, a little bit.
I mean, look at me. My avatar is (currently) the most sympathetic character being lethally wounded. What the hell is wrong with me? But yes, NPF does tend to be rather civil about discussions. Concerning the economy, the one and really only objective the government could pursue is to restore consumer confidence. Considering the size of the US economy alone, no amount of government spending is going to restart it just like that. Towards that end, a highly charismatic president with public approval is probably more effective than the stimulus package. |
