Thief released them for about five pages and then put them right back where they were. He only released them because he wasn't going to need them anymore and once he did he put everything right back. He just has more trouble enforcing it now.

Yeah, Sarda himself has definitely become quite evil. However, we don't actually know yet whether his plan for using the orbs is evil or not, because we don't yet know what that plan is.

Well, we know that Sarda is definitely evil by his own standards, since if he can blame Thief and RM for not stopping BM, he has to blame himself as well (they couldn't have stopped him due to the time loop, but for it to exist it has to happen once, so they are at fault, but for him to be unable to stop BM due to the time loop, he had to have actually decided not to stop BM in the first place)

He killed the first Giant, killed his doppelganger, absorbed the Fiends, killed Fighter and Thief recently (sure, Sarda made them feel better, but you that was after he decidedly killed them). Sure, in the end, he won't be able to win, but he's had his minor victories along the way.

I think he wants black mage to win outright, like a big THE END as the world blows up or something.

Well, the "Killed thief and fighter" thing was surely subverted, but I don't think the others were. I mean, the Fiends/Giant/Doppelthing are still dead, and he is still super-powerful because he absorbed evil.
