I hate the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Seeing the list of 2009 Inductees, I was surprised. Then I had a look at who is in the Hall, and much worse, who ISN'T.

Seeing Metallica and Run D.M.C. get in made me a little sick...

....then I saw a list of groups that are not.

No Rush, Dick Dale, Todd Rundgren, Deep Purple, Joe Cocker, Commodores, Dire Straits, Iggy Pop, B.O.C., Jethro Tull, New York Dolls, Peter Frampton....This list goes on...

Instead we have, Run D.M.C., Grandmaster Flash, The Talking Heads, Ringo Starr (solo), The Sex Pistols, Lovin' Spoonful, Jefferson Airplane, Metallica....

The most common complaint about the HoF is that they are more concerned with selling tickets to the induction dinner (where some of the bands being inducted play) than anything else. This leads to all the really big name bands being put in and not all the bands that made the big name bands possible.
But I really not musically knowledeable to comment.

I find the irony of Metallica being inducted and not Jethro Tull very poetic.

And really, Metallica being in there makes sense. I mean, yeah they haven't pressed a good album since 1992, but they were the most successful of the Big Four thrash bands even before then.

I guess Sex Pistols is kind of the same thing. Surprised, though, as the last time they were supposed to be inducted turned out poorly.

Run DMC, though... yeah, that's just silly.

I was under the impression two of those are rap bands, and the fact that Jethro Tull and Deep Purple and so forth aren't in it seems completely insane.

I don't mind Metallica being in it, but you can't go and ignore bands which are frankly more important to Rock and Roll history simply by coming first and being as good. Or better.

The Sex Pistols say piss on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Or something like that, I think they were on cocaine at the time. But it's all good.

A lot of bands have disparaged the hall of fame included lots of ones who are in it.

Wait, solo Ringo Starr is in it? hehehehehehehehehehehehe.
Octopus' garden was sweet but was still a beatles song.

Yeah that was exactly of my point. Metallica in before Deep Purple? Sex Pistols in before New York Dolls or Richard Hell?

As for that note from the Sex Pistols its a bit Ironic since the band blatantly ripped off Richard Hell, and to a lesser extent the New York Dolls, and this is a band that hired a bass player based solely on his looks. It had nothing to do with the sanctity of their music. They were all about selling records, and using a very particular look and a lot of shock to do it. So on reconsideration, that letter fits right in with their 'lets shock people and get our names in the news' strategy they employed their entire career.

Also Todd Rundgren not only deserves to be in, but the man should have his own wing. Not only was he a great musician, but he is a genius producer. Producing everyone from Meatloaf, Patti Smith, New York Dolls, Cheap Trick, Bad Religion, Grand Funk Railroad, Hall & Oats, Badfinger and tons of others.
The man was a great trendsetting musician and is one of the most highly regarded producers in the industry.

That's a good point. Deep Purple should get in by fame criteria as well though. They were once officially the loudest band in the world.
