So we are clear

All my life I learned about games either through magazines, rentals, or word of mouth. But that doesn't work anymore. Magazines are dead, I am too broke to rent, and my friends are either in the same situation or too bias for me to trust. Worst thing is with lack of money I have to be pickier about what I buy. But on forums only a handful ever get mentioned and I tend to like a larger sampling.
I feel so out of the loop when it comes to games lately. I've been a gamer most of my life, and its somewhat depressing to walk into a game store and have absolutely no idea what 90% of them are

Hmm, I know at Gamestop one time when my brother-in-law as buying several games at once they basically offered him a subscription to Game Informer for free if he got their card or whatever. It wasn't the best magazine but if all you're really looking for is reminders like "here is big name stuff that is coming out in coming months" it's not too bad.
A quick look at the front-page of a gaming site like Gamespot combined with looking at a site like Kotaku or 4colorrebellion should be enough to keep you in the loop. Also the reviews on Action Button Dot Net seem to cover only the bigger titles but in such meticulous detail that I'm not sure why it's not a bigger hit. I don't know, I barely ever buy games anymore, since I don't have a PS3 or Xbox, but I'm still fairly aware of the stuff that is coming out, though probably only for series I want to play the sequels to are in any depth.

His unapologetic bias and occasional habit to spend paragraphs bitching about the silliest things puts some people off.

websites were my first idea, but the issue is its better for looking for reviews of a specific game then simply browsing and finding out about new ones since they have simply a massive number of games listed and accumulated.
And not sure if GameInformer is still up and around. Alot of gaming magazines are going belly up lately.

Game Informer won't die anytime soon, mostly because Gamestop won't die anytime soon.
Anywho, I normally use 1UP.com and glance at NeoGaf's first page of threads, and, uh, here. Keeps me informed for the most part. |

I did appreciate his deciding to start putting in big block letters "ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT THE GAME NOW" at the point where he actually starts talking about the game he's supposedly reviewing, though. But yes, it's a rather nontraditional way to "review" games. That's why it's so great.

Magazines are dead? There are entire sections of store shelves where I live devoted to just gaming magazines.
Back in my Neverwinter Nights phase, I went through a similar thing. In fact, that entire Gamecube generation I missed. In fact, it was like 2007 when I found out the Gamecube existed. Beat THAT. Man that game was good. Invest your little money in that. :p |

In any case, if you liked EGM, Ed Senrad (the magazine's founder) bought back the rights from Ziff Davis and is planning on relaunching the magazine.
