Pets, past and present

I think you can divide pets into 3 divisions:
Pets that are like a cool screensaver
Pets that are like a friend
Pets that are like a friend you work with

As much as I love cats or dogs, I couldn't imagine owning one... as for the cool screensaver pets, I've had some before and I might get a jellyfish(extremely expensive) or a praying mantis if I ever settle down, but generally the 3rd option is more appealing... having a pet that's livestock seems more like growing a plant, allows you to grow your own food and clothing, which to me seems like a really cool thing to do.
